Agassi had such a perfect game for modern day tennis... Agassi vs Djokovic is probably be the best match up that never happened...
@Skiiiiiifreeeeeee
@Skiiiiiifreeeeeee 2 жыл бұрын
Best ball striker of all time. Not as fast or with as much reach as djokovic. Agassi would match up better on a faster court due to his flatter ball and aggressive positioning on the baseline. US open courts from 25 years ago give Agassi the best chance against djokovic and slower courts these days would give djokovic the best chance. Compelling match up indeed. Personally I'd give the edge to djokovic regardless of era due to his movement but Agassi's particular talent for controlling the middle of the baseline was unique.

Prime Agassi vs prime any of the big three would have been interesting. He wasn't a possession returner like Novak, he was offensive minded it would be great ball w any of them but the way Agassi liked to control the center would have been a great strategy against all of them.
@Skiiiiiifreeeeeee
@Skiiiiiifreeeeeee 2 жыл бұрын
@@johnsuttoniiijs I agree. It's hard to predict because he was a unique talent. It's easy to point to the fact that he's at an athletic/speed deficit to all 3 of them. At one point he was far faster than what you saw against federer in his later years but he was never a speed demon which you saw in his matches against sampras. But while his head to head vs pete favored sampras he did have a bunch of wins in his favor...notably at the Australian open which back then played slower than today. All you can say is he was a great player and in my opinion cleanest ball striker ever

Djokovic took the most difficult page out of Agassi's book: hit every ball perfectly. Latter-day Djoker reminds me a lot of latter-day Agassi, except, ya know, way better.

This man was really talented and imo hugely underachieved. You can see what he can do when he was focused and keep in shape and training. This era of tennis was also the most competitive imo with so many quality serve and volley players as well as baseliner.

I think we must consider his personal problems and his fall when he was reaching his peak in those early-mid 90's. His stats and slam count would be much better had he stayed on the track the whole time, but at the same time that's what makes him so unique and special: he was able to grow up, overcome his psychological hardships and come back to the first spot even though he was past his physical prime. This spectacular personal development is what makes Agassi my favourite tennis star ever. No bash at the Big 3 at all, but they're tennis machines fully dedicated to the sport while Agassi looked more human, flawed as we humans are.
@ederfonseca9609
@ederfonseca9609 Жыл бұрын
And in his time period win 8 slams made a fantastic and achieving career in every way possible. Players were not as durable and competition was way more rich than today. He's tied with Stefan Edberg and won more slams than Becker. Chang was a great all-around player and won only one major. If we look the whole picture, we will realize how achieving Agassi was against many odds.

For me, the greatest returner ever. Being able to do what he did on courts which were undoubtably faster than modern courts was pretty incredible. Not to take anything away from Djokovic who I would put at number 2.

@Skiiiiiifreeeeeee
@Skiiiiiifreeeeeee 2 жыл бұрын
@@Femaqui07 because of major count? You can't handicap past era players for shorter careers and totally different schedules and technology. Agassi hardly played the Australian open in the first 5+ years of his career and it would go on to be his best major. I'd say that agassi was a better pure returner/striker of the ball looking at just the return. Djokovic is a far superior athlete and has more options after the return to stay in the point. Aka agassi is a better returner but Djokovic has a marginally better total game to win the opposing players service game. If you were to look at it that way, net of all surfaces rafa is the best returner of the big 3 not Djokovic. He's won 20 majors with by far and away the worst serve of the 3

Wow. I had forgotten how good that era was. It's different than 2022, but at LEAST as high level. I also forgot how Agassi bulked up, for a while. He had this muscle dude trainer/friend, who helped him add some muscle strength. Also. Just seeing Sampras, again. I haven't seen him in ages. He had that 'shape' of the physique, when he was at net. A kinda like rectangular symmetry/presence, when he would move forward to end the point. I actually know a few people who insist that Sampras was 'boring.' There must be some psychological reason for people, tuning out Sampras. Agassi was awesome to watch.

Unfortunately, Agassi didn't have the professionalism like the big 3. It's hard to say, If losing versus these guys had changed his mindset, but without this 100% focus on being the best athlete possible, he couldn't have challenged them longterm. Talent wise, there is no doubt he could have played on their level.
