When it comes to the retail business in Africa, South Africa is without-a-doubt a market leader. It is home to many retail stores that not only have their presence in the country but also beyond.
Broadly speaking there are 2 large chains in South Africa - Shoprite and Pick & Pay. Shoprite also operates under other names which includes Checkers and USave. You will find stores under each of these names depending on it's location each store might differ slightly on quality and selection of products. Generally speaking, Checkers is the 'high-end', Shoprite is considered ' 'mid-range' and USave again targets the lower end of the market with a focus on basic food products at highly competitive prices. In comparison Pick & Pay consists of a selection of stores ranging from hypermarket to chain to franchise and generally good value across the board.
In addition you will also find SPAR which each is primarily privately owned (franchised) and depending on it's location will usually offer a good selection of products often not found at Checkers and Pick & Pay.
Lastly, targeting the upper end of the market is Woolworths Food where there seem to be a big emphasis on providing a consistent level of quality in both products and service. There has always been a perception that Woolworths is a LOT more expensive than the other retailers but we have found that often prices are closer than you might expect and when it comes to fresh produce the quality is unbeatable.
During 2020 Stats South Africa survey it was found that while the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic came with some short-term pricing effects at a wholesale level - particularly on essential food products - all products where a pricing spike was observed also showed an easing of prices after this period. You can check out a Business Tech article on the comparison of a basket of goods between the major retailers here: businesstech.co.za/news/busin...

I stumbled on this video and it's so well done! Watching now in July 2022, prices have gone up SO much! I live in the northern part of SA and we now pay R26.99/kg of tomatoes and R22.99/kg onions. Great job you guys!

Yes it really is. We've been out of SA since this video was made and we're also quite curious how it has changed just in this relatively short period as inflation seems to be a lot more visible everywhere this year.

Its interesting that they use plastic containers for ice cream like in the EU, in North America ice cream comes in waxed paper containers. Prices are reasonable, but the cost of living is lower in Sud Afrika considering wages. Well made video.

Thanks! We were back in SA at the beginning of 2023 for a few months and there has been a noticeable increase in prices since this video. However, prices are still reasonable compared to Europe for example.

Im in UK, and the prices of everything have gone up exponentially! A basic chocolate can price hike by £1..that's a whole R20...ridiculous..you all are better off in SA lol

Yip, a few cents (UK or EUR) this way or that way sounds like nothing but in the SA contexts it's huge!

Quite right. In fact from our experience often the value at woolworths especially considering fruit and vegetables can be very good as their quality control is usually very good

@@WeWillNomad lol it even made the news this last week I think that woolies cooking oil was like way cheaper than shoprite. 😂That was hilarious. But I think it was just a supply chain issue.

Woolsworths is upmarket? That’s so funny. And you were serious.
@WeWillNomad

Guess it's depends on your definition of the word, your location and relative experience. I'd be interested in hearing how you would rate the major supermarkets in SA?
@jp95js
@jp95js Жыл бұрын
@@WeWillNomad Pick n Pay, average. Spar, can be upmarket, depending on the owner. You buy a franchise on that supermarket and one I know off has a good meat and cheese choices. Shoprite, not on my list to go to but I admit I do see some good specials advertised at times. But yes normally I stick to Woolworths. Mind you I have one less than 2klm away so it is the handiest too. And it is normally the wife that gets in her twin cab, MG Extender, bakkie (her grocery getter) and does the shopping.
@WeWillNomad
@WeWillNomad Жыл бұрын
@@jp95js That's the strange thing about SPAR, it varies greatly in quality and product range depending on the owner. But apparently there is a big effort from Checkers over the last year to unseat Woolworths - they just opened the first "high-end FreshX supermarket" - their words not mine 😆

How much is the cost of living for a couple and 1 child living in Pretoria per month? Is the rent, electricity, water, internet... expensive? What do you think is the most expensive?
@WeWillNomad

I would recommend looking at www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/in/Pretoria for some averages on cost of living and compare it to other cities in South Africa.

Thanks very much man. I never understand if why Philippines is so expensive, grocery items, fruits veggies are so expensive here. And very low quality food. Even fruits and vegetables are coming from china!!! All chemical. Even Australia is way cheaper than Philippines when it comes to grocery and other food items and very high quality!!
@WeWillNomad

We've also seen that groceries prices are high in the Philippines. Perhaps it also has to do with the difficulty of transport across islands?
