The angrier they get the more the adult has to work to sooth them and less on correcting the bad opinion, its learned behaviour and after 20 years of using it she's stuck with it even if now her opinion is about dating or sex and not whether she can have extra icecream for lunch or something. Its not even unique to women (although they are definitely the ones who use it all the time to get their way), I see it quite often from managers in companies if they ever get challenged on one of their ideas then they tend towards getting angry or at least being more forceful to shut down any disenting or questioning. Its just the result of not developing proper emotional intelligence and learning how to handle being questioned.
