When it comes to navigating the guitar fretboard, the CAGED system is about as effective as it gets. This is because it covers literally every guitar chord and every guitar scale across the entire neck. In this video, I'll show you how you can use the CAGED system to play new chords, create your own guitar solos, and fully visualize the fretboard in a new way.
Here are some of the questions that this video will answer:
"What is the CAGED system?"
"Why does CAGED use these chords?"
"How do minor chords work with the CAGED system?"
"How does the pentatonic scale work with CAGED?"
"How do I solo using the CAGED system?"
"How do you use CAGED in other keys?"
"How do you practice using the CAGED system?"
If you have any other questions, please leave them in the comments below. Thanks for watching!

Hi, can you just go over your point about pentatonics fitting over caged chord shapes again please. Is there a pentatonic thst goes with the G Shape in CAGED but would hnot fit that well over the C shape using say, the E shape in the key of E?

I knew if you made a video on CAGED I'd get more useful information than I would from many other KZfaq-videos, because you connect it to practice and to other theoretical concepts so that things just start clicking. :) I've been practicing the 5 pentatonic shapes and now I get to connect that whole thing with the CAGED shapes. Thank you, you do an awesome job and help out so much!

This may be the most well-organized, clearly communicated channel on these concepts I've come across. I've been hoping to find a single cohesive space to direct people who are wanting to learn more theory and application on KZfaq, and I think I've just found it. You've seemingly thought of everything, including how to direct people to other videos based on question or concept. Stellar work man

Here’s EDCAG-7: you start on E, just like the guitar, and you use these 5 Dominant 7 shapes on the top 4 strings (DGBE). So E7, 2130; D7-shape, 2434; C7-shape, 6757; A7-shape, 9797; G7-shape, 999-10; and E7 again at the octave, 14-13-15-12. To those 5 shapes, associate increasingly more notes: 1-3-5-b7, 1-b3/3-5-b7, 1-b3/3-4-5-b7, then add b5-6-2 (one by one, in that order). Now you’ve associated Mixolydian combined with the Blues scale to those 5 shapes (1-2-b3/3-4-b5-5-6-b7). Even the last 3 of the 12 notes can be used in chromatic lines (b2-b6-7). - Please try this!

Fun! I didn't know the pentatonic, i just knew the major because i play by ear. I've been finding new chord shapes up the neck, thinking I'm finding them - and here you are showing me chords and shapes i thought were ones i found! Duh...i didn't find anything new! But they were new to me, and my ear loves their sounds depending on the song. Now i see a pattern of connectedness i didn't see before - i only heard it. I don't want this approach to take the fun of of the mystery, but it helps me improve. I guess a good ear, and knowledge, are a better mix than just one or the other...

This is a great video. My issue is I can see the notes insides the CAGED shape than my finders are on. It’s the extra notes that are not under my fingers that throw me. Is that just a memorization exercise. The caged shapes are on three notes of the chord, but there are 4 other notes that seem to throw me. Any suggestion?

wait so im confused so with the pentatonic shapes is it just the same as the A pentatonic shape that can only be played or do we have to start at the pentatonic of the actual scale so lets say the D pentatonic is on the 10 th fret do we start there??im lost
@Mulberry2000
@Mulberry2000 7 ай бұрын
A lot of shapes in pentatonic scales are the same they are just played in different positions of the fret board. For example look at em pentatonic scale and Am pentatonic. U have the same shape on the scales one is on the 5th position, (am pent) and the other is on the 12 fret -em pentatonic. They are the same for all scales - well mostly. The A major has the same shape as the Am and Em pentatonic but it starts on the second fret. Basically once you learn one shape it transfers over to other scales, and the same goes for other shapes.
