This week on Couple Things, we had a lot of fun talking about some things that could be red flags or dealbreakers. We went to Instagram to hear what you guys think are some red flags in dating and relationships...and we dove in.
0:00 Introduction
5:11 Your red flags from Instagram
10:33 Complicated relationship with their family
13:28 If they are divorced
14:44 If their parents don't like you or approve of you
20:05 If they don't text or respond back right away
21:40 They are friends with their exes
23:22 If they call all of their exes crazy
24:09 Their best friend is of the opposite sex
25:01 If it's long-distance
29:33 If they want to spend all of their time with you
If you haven’t yet, please rate Couple Things and subscribe to hear more. Follow us on Instagram to keep the conversation going at / couplething. .

It's important to be understanding of people and not jump to conclusions/judgments. With the complicated family stuff, I think calling that a red flag comes from a place of privilege that you grew up with a healthy and intact family, which isn't the case for many. And many are doing their best to heal from difficult pasts and shouldn't be judged for what they are bringing to the table.

I didn't know this channel existed until recently. I watch your main channel and somehow came across one of these episodes and I'm addicted now. Thank you for sharing these things and being honest. It's not like you two agree on literally everything just for the sake of appearances. It's so refreshing how you challenge each other in a respectful way, and I love seeing that aha moment

First time listener/watcher. I truly love this podcast! I agree with most of what you said although I don't believe your family will always side with you. It only took me your very first lead in statement that you cannot go into dating with a specific list of requirements, that just grabbed my attention. I think that its very difficult to ever have a solid foundation if you don't match with "core values" I love the tenderness you show each other. Thank you for sharing your insight. Love to the East Family❤️

I loved that you touched on family/in-laws. My husband does not have a relationship with much of his family, and at first I thought it was a red flag because I am so close with my family. BUT, as Shawn said, "that's not the person". We had a long conversation and I realized just how toxic of a family he had & why he chose to not have a relationship with his family. He gets along SO well with my family and I couldn't ask for a better man. He's a great husband and an even more wonderful father. I'm so glad I took the time to get to know why & to truly listen.

Thank you for giving "has a complicated relationship with your family" a yellow flag. I totally agree that it warrants considerable communication while a couple is dating. Definitely. But as a teacher who has seen many students try so hard to "break the cycle" of their home situation and have succeeded, I would urge a person to learn the person you are dating and not judge them by their parents. People can want and achieve something better than what they had growing up or maybe just want something very different from their childhood. Maybe they have become a Christian while their family is not, for example. It doesn't mean you should write their family off in all circumstances either just definitely don't judge an individual by who their family is and where they came from.
