Man you the best!!! I always wanted to learn microsolder. My hdmi port broke on mine 1 year ago and i just so happen to run into 1 of ur videos and it was downhill from there. Ive bought 16 used PS4s so far and successfully repaired 10. Im looking forward to doing my first APU as soon as i can afford better tools. Im working with a cheap walmart solder gun and a $10 microscope i ordered from wish. My first 2 repairs were with a magnifying glass taped to my phone camera lol. Thanks Andrew

Hi i have a ps4 white light problem and need advice. So i traded a faulty xbox one original for a supposed faulty ps4 original from a person that fixes consoles that wanted the Xbox for spares. So on the day i got home with the ps4 i used my ps3 cables to power it on and it miraculously powered on which surprised me as the controller was connected properly using the usb cable. But i saw the screen flash black then back to the home screen which i didn't know what is was then it did it once more and was displaying perfectly. After about 5 mins of waiting for it too show some errors or switching off because i did not expect it to work i plugged in my usb speakers to the other usb port on the front while the controller was plugged in. That was when the screen went black instantly. I didn't know what happened and pressed the eject button and a copy of GTA 5 came out which means the console was still powered on. When i plug the controller and speakers in on my ps3 super slim at the same time is says too many devices drawing power something like that. So i think it drew too much power on the ps4 and caused a wlod on the ps4. Im trying to do a home repair with minimal tools and if you could give me some idea of what the usb ports could have shorted eg a transistor or fuses or something. It still powers on and everything but that was the defining factor i think that contributed to the white light of death. Any recommendations would help as ive watched a lot of KZfaq videos and most are the ic chip or some transistor . Its a original ps4 with wlod 1116A

Thanks. You are very good at what you do and at explaining it to others. Keep it up. Thanks to you, I got a blue light of death (long version) off ebay going with the 3 washers trick only to find white light of death after that. I fixed it by watching your videos and changing the hdmi encoder. I second your comment about hot air stations. My trusty Aoyue 968A+ got the old hdmi port out (it fell out whilst taking the shield off the hdmi ic on the other side of the board lol) but could not get the board hot enough to allow for aligning the hdmi port pins with a new port. Thankfully, the old port was OK and the previous owner had given up at that stage. Cheers.

I need this done to mine. I just recently dropped my ps4 off at the local repair guy to have fixed knowing that I had this same problem. When I explained the problem and my suspension of what it could be, I was reinsured it shouldn't be a problem to repair. Well guess what? Got a phone call letting me know they replaced the hdmi port only to have the same issues and they do not have a in house person to replace the i.c. and apparently there is not a person in the whole city of Austin that can fix this problem. So I guess I'm doing it myself. Thanks for the excellent video guide! I really would love to send it to you for repair..

Ill be doing this on my ps3 this weekend. I like the method you used for soldering the new chip on. Most seem to put the chip on bare traces(no solder), then put a big glob of solder or solder paste to one side & drag solder all the way around. May work but it looks easier in vids & its easy to mess up doing it that way imo.

Would have been nice to capture the HDMI port testing on camera, although I suspect this is done this way intentionally so not to give away tricks of your business or because it's hard to get everything on camera AND the DMM. Glad you showed testing continuity of the video filters to the chip itself though, helped me verify my HDMI video filters as ok. I replaced my HDMI encoder chip and I now have video and sound...Many thanks for this and all your other content, you have shared and helped me and so many others, you do great things :)

Andrew, your video's are great. You are definitely someone who never gives up, like that ! Just had a ps4 with WLOD and flikkering black screen at random times - under microscope I saw 1 pin moved about 1mm inside, so that one needed replacement - replaced HDMI port, same problem - replaced HDMI IC, same problem - gone through your video's, measured everything again, all GOOD, so eventually concluded that the NEW HDMI IC chip was defected - replaced HDMI IC by another new one, and BOOM, working ! Satisfied, but still thinking, how could that happen ? Never seen a new defective HDMI IC chip, did you ?

Andrew Paul Thinking about desoldering and soldering back the hdmi Ic's with my rework machine, which I use for reballing apu's for blod ps4's. Also Thinking about a test method to test new hdmi ic's, suspicious hdmi Ic on boards and desoldered hdmi ic's. When I desolder and solder back a hdmi Ic with my rework machine, i can make a video, if you like. I scratched my head actually all the time yesterday, when It did not work after replacing the Ic for the first time. Left my girlfriends house on sunday and said: I need to get back to work, I need to fix It.

There is a very fine line between not enough & too much heat/air flow. I like to use a temperature controlled heat gun, to preheat the board, & also use low temp thermal alloy, known as "Chip Quick" to help loosen the pins of the chip, as well as the shield. Often, I use no hot air station, just the heat gun. If the chip has a thermal pad underneath, then I break out the air station, but just to melt the solder pad under the chip. I see that this chip has no pad.

Hi Andrew, thanks for all your videos, I have to say they are really useful. I'm facing an issue with my PS4 Pro console, when I turn on the console it says Too Many Devices connected. Ethernet Port is dead, Usb Ports are dead as well, Sony suggested to reset the console, and now I have a beautiful reseted console without being able to sync the controllers. Do you know Is there a way to sync the controllers in a hacked/cracked way so I can Sync them and use the console. Or do you know which chip needs to be replaced based on your experiencie?, I want to try to fix it by my self, since I was told that the board must be replaced, so! Thanks in advance!

Use solder paste to tin the pads instead of regular solder. It lays down better, and most of the time you can lay the chip on it, heat and it lays down a nice filet.

First testing from the pins to the alternates had me confused as I couldn’t really see what he was doing and my motherboard is completely different from that one. Would really like to test everything before I buy a new chip. Also what are you putting on the chip before removing it. And what temperatures are best for removing the chip. Mine didn’t have a cover over the chip and it’s directly behind the port on the same side.

Hello. I'm starting to learn, to repair things. I have a ps4 1116a, which does not give an image. I did as you explained, but even so, there is still no picture. I noticed that near the hdmi encoder, as you said, it has 4 components, all in a row. They seem to me to be capacitors and resistors, but I don't know. Can you tell if this affects anything, in not giving an image? The components are the ones you mentioned.

Hi Andrew, I'm new to repairing but I've taken on the challenge of repairing a PS4 original, I found (SAB-001 model). Tested the HDMI pins and pins 1-12 (all the data pins) are shorting to ground. Is this normal? Everything else around it looks fine. The IC encoder side had some sticky residue on it so is this likely a bad IC? Thank you so much for the video! It's been amazingly useful! Keep up the excellent explanations!

hi Andrew Love your Videos. I have the famous WLOD, replaced the HDMI chip TWICE and still no joy, I have managed to have another look at my PS4 mainboard , and to my surprise I see that I have an smd component missing. The missing component is located above the HDMI chip on the top right-hand corner. it the second smd component if you looking form the extreme right-hand side just above the HDMI chip. I would like to know what component it is resistor/cap/diode, and the value of the component. Please would you check up on a donor board so that I can get the components or at least the type and value for replacement. Looking forward for your response Many Thanks ash

Thanx Andrew for this tutorial. in the console i fixed by removing the four filters, i checked them before and they looked fine with continuity test, but i had to remove them, i really worked a lot on that console, so not 100% sure if removing the filters solved my issue. i bought the jovy i40 solder and it is in the way now, may needs two weeks to arrive if everything went ok. looking for your next video and if you have a PS4 that does not sync the controller at all except in safe mode, please care to share your thoughts :) it driving me nuts

+Andrew Paul Thanx Paul, do you think that this tip www.aliexpress.com/item/Free-Shipping-T12-1403-spade-scraper-spatula-soldering-iron-tip-for-HAKKO-FX-951-soldering-station/827249593.html will work on the Isolder40, i saw in ebay it may does, but not sure, what do you think?
@AndrewPaul
@AndrewPaul 8 жыл бұрын
It looks like it might but without seeing the bottom edge its hard to confirm. I am aware of people using Hakko tips with the iSolder40 though so I'd guess it'll be OK. :-)

Hi Andrew, I've had the exact same issue as appears in your video although the tech shop i left it in to be fixed with had it for 3 weeks said its beyond repair. Do you do repairs in London or have any contacts for repair in London?

Is it necessary to put the HDMI IC shield back once I'm finished working on the IC, does it actually have any major role there. I didn't notice anywhere in your videos you putting it back. Thanks

Hi Andrew, let me first compliment you on your very professional work !!! it helped me a lot. I have this problem where i changed the hdmi port but still no signal, when measuring the pins direct to the filters in front of the ic, all ok. but when i measure from the via points to filters nothing happends. might have any indications for me ? Thanks in advance pal !
@AndrewPaul
@AndrewPaul 8 жыл бұрын
Hi,Have you scraped the vias back to expose the copper before attempting to check them for continuity? Cheers.
@adilbtje
@adilbtje 8 жыл бұрын
Hello Andrew, no i didnt, but i think if the pads to the filters have continuity the vias will be ok, right ? Now the telly doesnt give me the "NO signal" indication but rather black screen and if i play around with the hdmi i sometimes get a green snowy image, tried also booting in safe mode but the same..

Hey Andrew, while I was doing continuity testing on the video filters, I accidentally popped one of the caps off the filters and it went flying to who knows where. Is this a concern at all? If so, what should I do about it? Thanks.

Hi, it shouldn't matter as long as they read continuity across. Cheers.

Hello, I have CUH-1003A PS4, UK Day one edition. I want to order a replacement hdmi IC but I'm not sure of which Panasonic model I should order. Also, can you please tell me how you reinstalled the heat sink on top of the ic chip
@AndrewPaul
@AndrewPaul 6 жыл бұрын
You'll need a Panasonic MN86471A for a 1003A. The metal shield can be left off if you're struggling , but to place it back you'll need to re-solder it back using a fairly large iron tip and flux.

Hi Andrew! Thanks for the vid. I measured the path from the chip to the filters and figured out that all pins going to the HDMI are shortened to ground. There is no physical damage on the port. I am consider changing the chip. What do you think? Regards, Erwin
@AndrewPaul
@AndrewPaul 7 жыл бұрын
I'd bet that's a very good possibility. Remove the current IC and see if the shorts disappear. If they do, change the IC.
@herrdered
@herrdered 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Andrew! I changed the HDMI IC and the shorts disappeared. As the metal shield around the chip was very hard to remove, I cut it away. Therefore, I tested the PS4 without the metal shield on the HDMI chip. The TV is getting a signal now, but still there is no picture. You can observe some noise (similar to the noise of an analog TV receiver) when the TV is getting the HDMI signal, before the TV is turning black. So, my main question is: Also without the metal shield, I should get a better signal, shouldn’t I? (I want to avoid placing the metal shield there again, it was a pain removing it already 😊 ) Regards,Erwin

Awesome videos, really nice work and explained thoroughly. Have a nice case here myself, CUH1116. White led. HDMI port looked okay, but used your video to check every pin. No problems. Checked the diodes, all around 0.500-0.600, so okay as well. No shorts on the topside caps, decided to replace the HDMI IC nevertheless. No dice, still white led. Removed all 4 filters and replaced them with wires, checked continuity to the IC pins, all ok. Still white led. Any clues to what I could check more apart from these ? I doubt the IC is bad (or even that the original one was bad), but since the port itself is pristine as well I'm really baffled here. Failing GPU ?

Very possibly. Check the condition of the HDMI port first - if all good then this is the most likely cause.

Hi Andrew great video followed your video's and decided with your guide to change Panasonic IC chip but regrettably as everything was going so well, after removing the IC chip I noticed the four filters have come off. What's the best way to put them back on or am I screwed? :-( Thanks
@AndrewPaul
@AndrewPaul 8 жыл бұрын
+Naz Nadeem just pop them back on - they're not directional so just line them up back on their pads, hold them with some tweezers while they reattach. Once they're all back on turn the airflow down a bit, add flux and reflow. They'll all line back up perfectly and you should hopefully be good to go!

scrap boards are the best bet - PS3s have the same filters and scrap PS3 boards are pennies on eBay so just drop for one of these and swap them back over - you'll have a few spare then too :)

First of all thank u for your help. Sadly i have another doubt. Checking on the internet for the Panasonic chip MN86471A i found out that there are lots of models with various prices of the same chip. May you tell me whats the difference ? Quality of the component? it seem strange because every chip is sold by panasonic. Of course im not an expert , thanks for your support.

It's just re-sellers trying to maximise profits on the parts as seems to be common these days sadly so prices naturally fluctuate wildly. Go for the cheapest reliably rated seller you can find.
