At 8:24, For Blender 4.1 users this function is being changed to a modifier. In Modifiers Tab > Normals > shade smooth by angle You will still have to right click the object and shade smooth

If you're stuck on the auto smooth part, the option for "Smooth by Angle" is no longer under the Data tab. Its now its own modifier. So go to the modifier tab for your seat, and add a new modifier. Its called "Smooth by Angle". Hope this helps someone.

For anyone else who was wondering why his rectangle turned into an oval and not a circle like your own, it was because the way he smashed his plane after applying the mirror modifier is very important. Hope that helps someone find the problem. 1:12 ish if you wanted a time
@lukebrog3702
@lukebrog3702 Жыл бұрын
Thanks I was really wondering this, but I still don't understand it - what do you mean by the way he smashed the plane? What confuses me is what happens at 3:29, half the mesh looks like its deleted and then the other half is half an oval ish but none of that is explained??
@Animatty
@Animatty Жыл бұрын
@@lukebrog3702 He "Smashed it together" by turning on clipping and moving the separate parts together. As far as I understand, you're talking about one side having a square outline that he can add loop cuts or points to. The reason why that isn't on the other side is because it's how the mirror modifier displays your object. One side is being mirrored across an axis to exist on the other side as well. Whatever the side with controls becomes, the other side follows suit. Any further questions?

When enable Auto Smooth in the Normals section of your Object Data for an Object, you have to enable "Shade Smooth" on that Object to see any change take place. I sat there for a while thinking - "Why does mine still look exactly the same?" and this is why. Auto Smooth will correct the smoothing when the object is shaded to be smooth and not flat.

This tutorial series came just at the right time. After finishing the Donut, I've been experimenting with Blender but some things I try just don't quite come out right. This tutorial, however, is helping with that. I'm currently just watching them rather than following them but the tips I'm picking up on mirroring, edge flow, bevels, etc. are really helping me refine my current project (Auto-smooth is an absolute Godsend!) and making things look closer to how I want and (slightly) less amateur. :-)

Andrew, what you say in the +/-14 min is very true. I do oil painting and drawing as well. And the one thing I was taught is always to step back to get the full picture. What looks great close up does not always look great when you take a few steps back. And Art is viewed from a distance. If you look at oil painters, they always every now and again take a few steps back. I hope I make sense.

the line on the cad drawing that you think is a bevel is actually the beginning and the end of a radius when we export a 3d model from a cad software like solidworks or solidedge
@JackLe1127
@JackLe1127 4 жыл бұрын
The bevels causes the auto-smooth to break because it breaks a hard 90 degree angle into smaller increments. If you keep bumping up the number of segments on the modifier, the increment will eventually be below the threshold angle (30 degrees in your case) and everything will be smoothed out again.

Andrew, Thanks for the interesting clear tutorials. Would never have learnt this much this fast without your tips. Proud to have found a tip for the master this time: To solve the sharpness of the seat bevel (11:10/16:24); In the bevel settings, you choose the 'Limit Method' to be 'Angle'. Makes more sense than to change 'Object Data Properties'.

Even if you're not using auto-smooth, it's important to change the limit method of the Bevel modifier to Angle (or edge Weight), otherwise it'll bevel edges that shouldn't be beveled, and the Subdivision Surface modifier will smooth the surfaces incorrectly. Remember how Andrew showed us that SubDiv uses 3 edges? Well, the bevel will get in the way of those for smooth continuous surfaces like the chair seat if it gets applied to the interior edges.

Nice to see what i did wrong by trying by myself. I started out with a cube, loop cutted along y axys, modelet into the shape, inlayed the top and the bottom faces to get a top part bevel line, added two loopcuts along the edge and setted a subsurf to smooth the edges, but i encountered some issues with the clipping of the mirror and resolved with some fiddling around the merging and x axis alignment to eliminate some of the artifacts. But it does some strange curves in the side part that i could not fix. Starting from a plane seems a much better, neater solution!

13:34 how do you actually know which order the modifiers need to be in, it doesnt make sense to me that having these in a different order will mess with the result - how do you understand this? Many thanks!
@cerbi2720

Let me explain it in the easiest way; When you smooth something before making it thick (referring to subsurface and solidifier modifiers) it would look messy right ? Or if you ask something to mirror itself (mirror) and ask it to smooth the edges (subsurface) it would try to smooth itself with its mirror I hope I could explain it ^ Edit : I saw that it was a question 1 year ago lol, I hope I was useful tho
