TOP Audio SPEAKER UNDER 1000 Wharfedale Denton 85th Anniversary Review
Finding affordable speakers that sound good is at the top of most audiophile lists. Style and sound often come at a high price, leaving one sacrificed for the other. With the Wharfedale Denton 85th Anniversary Speakers, you can have both. These modern vintage looking speakers are among the best speakers for music listening at home. The Wharfedale Dentons have me wondering - is this all the high end speaker you need?

Replaced my beloved RP 600M’s with the Denton 85 a couple weeks ago. I absolutely love them! To be blunt, they blow away the Klipsch’s in every aspect. These are end game speakers for me, they’re that good. The vertical soundstage is insane, they can sound so big, tower like. Baffles my brain and the center imaging is spot on. They have all the detail I could ask for yet still have those warm mids/bass that sound oh so beautiful. It’s amazing how Wharfedale can strike that perfect balance. And I now completely understand the term non-fatiguing. You can literally listening to these for hours on end. I honestly can’t sing their praises high enough. I’m fully onboard with Wharfedale now. Oh yeah not to mention they’re absolutely beautifully crafted. Gorgeous top to bottom. Worth every penny imo ✌️

Alright, I just bought a pair and received them 3 days ago...12/23/22. Set them up on stands at ear level. Running on a Cambridge CXA60 amplifier. Source is a BluSound Node 2i running Tidal Hifi. Also running with two subwoofers. They are set up slightly toed in and I have not experimented with other placement as of yet. In short, they sound great right out of the box. Not sure why some reviews say the treble is too bright. Makes no sense in my listening.... I do have a very well damped listening space, lots of furniture, carpeting, and being that it's an attic, the walls are sloped at near 45 degree angles...which helps scatter reflections. The treble seems spot on under these conditions. I am treble sensitive to a degree and I have no issues with the treble. As Andrew says, the imaging is fantastic...Especially the center image. I really notice it while watching a movie in 2 channel....The Dentons disappear....even off axis I was fooled into thinking the dialogue was coming directly from the tv.. The midrange is definitely the star here. Very full and smooth. Adele sounded dreamy compared to the Klipsch RP600M's I am coming from. Those never really did it for me. The cabinets are truly beautiful. They look and feel like a well built speaker. I have not listened without my subwoofers, so I cannot comment on whether they go very deep in the bass, but I don't have even the slightest of concerns with my subwoofers on, so no need for me to test that. Loving them so far!

Listening to these speakers (music) with a Rotel A11 tribute amplifier -- tone disabled. Diverse music from Yello to ACDC sounds great. As the speakers get some exercise over a few days the bass matures to a satisfying degree and I no longer pine for a subwoofer. Dave Hollands double bass fills the room beautifully. The soundstage is magic in effect. Very happy with the Denton 85th Anniversary speakers - Thanks for the review!

I bought these exact speakers, and the U-turn Orbit on your recommendation, and was not disappointed. They are beautiful and have an incredible center image. The only thing I’d add to your review is that they need some attention paid to placement to get the most out of their imaging and sound. Adding a sub didn’t hurt either.

Paradigm Monitor SE Atoms based on your recommendation. They're on my computer flanking my imac keeping me sane every day. The highs and separation are really impressive as well as the projection. While I'm not shaking walls, they're not lacking in bass and really only droop off on extended lows from hip-hop, EDM and modern soundtracks. As someone who gets annoyed with excessive bass dominating modern mixes, I really don't miss it all that much.

Thank you for the review Andrew. I thoroughly enjoy your well-versed reviews and this review, in particular, spoke loudly to me as I am in the middle of deciding if I should go for the Dentons or Lintons. I feel the Dentons would suit my listening area the most as it is on the small side. My other consideration would be the amps pairing. At the moment, I am running a Rotel A12. Have you had any experience with Rotels? and if so would you see Wharfedale and Rotels as a good combination? Your thoughts (or anyone else's) would be very much appreciated. Many anticipated thanks to all and happy listening.

It’s not only the latest album either. I thought it had to be part of my system - the preamp in my Marantz, my amp, my speakers, surely it had to be on my end. Cool fun video! The shape of these reminds me of my Design Acoustic Speakers as they also are the deeper than high or wide. I heard my PS-6 speakers think it least 30 years ago. They cost more than I had but about a year later I found a pair of their metal stands for sale and bought them. Jump ahead at least 20 years and thanks to Ebay found a pair of the speakers with surrounds totally shot and got them for around 60 bucks. Got the surrounds replaced and still can not believe how fantastic they sound. Plenty of deep base, great mids and fantastic upper range. The stands are way cool and even have a slight upward tilt to expand the listening stage. I always think if the mids and highs are great it's the base that separates the men from the boys and these deliver wonderful natural deep base.

I have the Denton 80th and the 85th. The 80s are just so warm yet with enough detail to satisfy me. I am coming off sets of Ultra bookshelves and JBL 530s. I cannot unhear the 80s. The Ultras are missing something after hearing the 80s. The 530s well they stretch the music like no other bookshelf, yet lack the 80s warmth. I cannot get enough of the 80s. The 85s are a different beast than the 80s. Definitely more audiophile than all 3. The 85s are crazy efficient for any ohm rating. The bass and treble are so punchy and powerful. On my Yammi 501 turning the volume past the 10 oclock position is painful. The sound is tremendous yet my ears cannot take it. Yet I dont think you will find a better sounding speaker at low to low moderate levels. Sitting 11 feet away and they are scrumptious. The 85s define efficiency, scale and dynamics. The hang up for me is in my 15 x 20 room they are so dynamic. definitely no need for a sub. I only play music with them. I dont know why you would use these for HT. I had the Elac DBR6s and Klipsch 51s for a short time and the Denton 85s remind me of them both but are far superior to both. Oh and the fit and finish is impeccable. The Denton manuals shows you how to wire them. The binding post are labeled HF an LF. They show you to take the positive speaker lead to the pos HF terminal and the negative speaker lead to the LF neg terminal. I have never seen this only on the Dentons. The Yammi 501 has variable loudness control. I have found adjusting it helps with overpowering dynamics. I am just not sure I can keep these yet. Hope this is informative.

@@andreassouth1523 Definitely the DVR 62, all though it can be bright but not like a Klipsch or The 85s. If you use the variable loudness and treble I think you will find it to expand the soundstage. Also taming any brightness on the DVR 6.2s.

Andreas, I put some more thought into this. The DBR 6.2 is neutral, not sure it would give you what you want. Denton 85ths are bright. I have been using Cambridge Audio Sx50, with great success for warm and lush. I use the treble, bass, and variable loudness on a YAMI 803n, with great success. You give up some detail though. The SX50 are sweet and do give decent bass with right stands and using the bass control. They actually sound better by themselves then with a sub. They perform better than speakers twice there size. And sounstage is possible just not great. Now I just hooked up a set of Wharfedale EVO 4.1s, in place of the SX50s. 15 minutes in and I am impressed. Warmth, detail, right amount of punch, spaciousness, airy, just have not tried enough genres yet. 803n at 4ohms, ISO Acoustic stands, speakers 12 ft apart, room 22 x 12, speakers on long wall. These 4.1s are gonna probably be keepers. They say the get better with time. Warm and airy detail.

Hey Andrew- I'm a NYC journalist/drummer who's finally upgrading his budget-audiophile system after more than a decade raising a kid and otherwise ignoring the noise while enjoying the music. Your videos have been essential to my re-education, especially after a decade-plus of dramatic change in how music is delivered and consumed. So, thanks for doing such a stellar job. QUESTION 1: You mention that the Elac Reference bookshelves are power hogs, but the comparative specs run contrary to that, so I'm wondering if I'm missing a variable or two, since I thought impedance impacted amp power output more than a +/- 3db sensitivity difference. To wit: Denton 85s: nominal impedance = 4 ohms / sensitivity = 88db. Elac DBR62: 6 ohms / 86db. (Denton 80s: 6 ohms / 86db). QUESTION 2: Wondering how Wharfedale is getting such wide frequency responses out of the Dentons: 85s = 45Hz-20kHz and 80s = 44Hz-24kHz. I'd postulate that they're compromising on the high end (treble roll-off), but that appears to be a conscious choice by the guy who designed the anniversary series, from what I've read, as he was harking back to the original. Since that's the case, perhaps the bass tightness + overall dynamics are what's taking the hit, as you implied? But again, that also seems to be part of the design. So, I'm scratching my head for a definitive answer. At any rate, look forward to hearing back. Cheers, Lawrence

My favorite bookshelf speaker is my current bookshelf speaker, the Klipsch RP-600M. These replaced some JBL bookshelf speakers I had for two decades. My initial impression of the RP-600M wasn't the promised "magical experience" but they're growing on me the more I use them. Favorite music that I've played over and over for years that suddenly I'm hearing something new via the Klipsch. I run the Klipsch on a now getting dated Panasonic SA-HE200 receiver. I have a love/hate relationship with the receiver...but admittedly the Klipsch sound good with it.

@@rreichar1 I was on the path to simpler through soundbars and smart speakers but then I rediscovered vinyl and everything bulky came back out of the closet. However, my approach over the years have gone back and forth and when the pendulum swings back to simpler, I will seriously consider something like The Fives. Currently my favorite 2-way bookshelf is what I’ve got hooked up to my system, those being the Klipsch R-41m’s They do everything I need them to with crisp highs and lush mids and an impressive bass response. I balance them out with these 3-stage MTX speakers that I can’t find any information on. They were a steal at $40 for the pair from a thrift store and with 12” woofers on them and (I assume) being rated for 500w, I know they’re party speakers, but DAMN they make my house rattle and extend the bass super low. Rhapsody in Blue makes them sing.
