Longstreth is a very dedicated drummer. I remember hearing a story of him being kicked out if a band named Angelcorpse in 1998 because his level was not good enough. Hé worked like a mad man and joined Origin the following year. You can see now the mastery he acheived since. Speaking of hardworking extreme metal drummer, I would recommend you to take a look at the drum video of german drummer Lille Gruber. His band Defeated Sanity has an interesting story. It was created in 1993 when he was a teenager with his father Wolgang Teske, who was musician for a famous german jazz band in the 70's, Muck Groh. The musical background in jazz of his father influenced his drumming style as well as the sound of the band. They released several démos, promos and two albums together with his father as guitariste, until Wolgang Teske left the band in 2008 and passed away two years later. Defeated Sanity keeps working hard and is not one of the most respected band in the death metal underground. All of these influences created a band mixing technicity, groove, brutality and jazzy elements. And to be honest I never seen a rimshot blast (not a gravity blast) before in this vidéo. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p6ufbJt7vs7Npok.html

He does, also in this video, but you can not hear them since the PA is probably too far away and behind his kit, well you can not hear the bass drum but mainly because the camera mic doesn't cover it very good. I made the same experience with love recording. If you don't have either access to the foh sound some way or a veeeery decent camera mic, chances are this is the best it gets quality wise.

I don't think it's a rant, it's more like something you felt like sharing and personally I'm glad you did. Like you said, a jazz drummer will run circles around metal drummers all things jazz considered. It's as simple as that. Metal fans tend to be very passionate (we're mostly nerds) and sometimes engage in ridiculous and pointless arguments measuring the levels of skill of our favourites like this is the Olympics. And of course, thanks to the interwebs, sometimes things get out of hand. I truly believe that once you've reach a certain level of proficiency, trying to split hairs between amazing drummers is just pointless. Hell, Gavin Harrison himself couldn't play like this in a million years!! Does it mean all the speed demons out there are automatically better than him? Lol. No. Also, I think you've noticed by now... metal people live metal. It's not just background music. This sounds very cliche, but it's absolutely true. Why most requests are for metal drummers? Cause again, we're nerds into this kinda stuff. I think most jazz/fusion/whatever heads don't really care that much about seeing their favourites on the spotlight, but I might be wrong. And yes, John smokes...!!

Well said. There's only so many hours in a day, and a human brain can only absorb so much, both disciplines jazz and metal take focus and dedication to become proficient at. There is a surprising amount of crossover tho, more and more with jazz guys like Tigran taking elements from metal (thanks Meshuggah!) and metal guys constantly taking things from jazz/fusion (thanks Allan!) to where eventually I think there'll be a lot more developed drummers coming along.

Thanks again Andrew for a cracking video! In my humble opinion, many many drummers will never reach this level of speed , or intricacy of the other drummers you've reviewed. I drummed about 15 years ago ( at crap level) , started again about a year ago (at crap level) , but I have to say , I can hold a beat and I dearly love to hit those skins. For me the pleasure it gives you, far outweighs the pressure to be a fantastic drummer. It just makes me smile so much when I'm on the kit, and if the people like it, great , if not , I'm not worried. I remember about 10 people coming to our band practice back in the 90's , it felt like playing Wembley to me. Playing music is a personal experience, and while I do care what it sounds like to people listening, the biggest thrill I get is just by playing. Hope that makes sense . Keep up the great work Andrew, loving your channel. HUGE thumbs up 👍👍👍☮☮☮

Thanks for your comments at the end. I'm 63 and have been living with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome for the last 30 years or so. Because of certain physical limitations, it has taken me a long time to learn stuff. So there is no way I could ever come close to this of playing. And perhaps because of this I don't really enjoy this kind of music or the drumming involved. Don't get me wrong. I am in awe at that level of technique and skill. And I wish I could play as fast as these guys. But I suspect that a lot of what they are doing is going right over my head. I just appreciate your validation that the kind of stuff I do which is more groom oriented is okay too. Up to now I had been reluctant to comment on this for fear that the metal heads would think I was putting down this kind of music. You reminded me that while its important to listen to all styles of music, it's okay to say that I' not crazy about this genre or other. It's okay to say that I prefer the kind of music I play. Thanks again.

Even when those who are not into metal music will listen with an open mind and in return recognize the talent and not dismiss or disrespect the music and in return still remain true to themselves, metalheads should have no problem and will respect your opinions on metal music. We know its abrasive especially death metal and are aware this isn't for everybody, but with that being said it is still music that is technically challenging, rhythmically complex, and should be in the very least respected. Its cool to see nonfans like yourself appreciate what musicians such as John Longstreth bring to the table.

fun fact John's parents were Jazz musicians. Edit: on the subject of blasts, I think blasting has now become part of the vocab of contemporary metal and prog guys. i always think that blasting in current extreme metal is what riding 3rds on the ride is for jazz. it is often the backbone of the song and the snare comping that goes with it is done in both styles. Only difference is that jazz is often in 3rds and metal in 4ths

Wow, that is incredible! He is so efficient with his movements needed to hit the drums, he almost looks like he's pretending to play. Kinda like some drunk dude saying that he can play better than the real drummer or like a bad air drummer playing to a recording. Not my kind of music but I sure appreciate the talent.

I think the best thing a drummer, doesn't matter which kind of music he/she is playing, can do is branch out, look into other grooves, ideas, patterns. It can not diminish your playing in any way, the only thing it does is widen your vocabulary. And if you are into an instrument this much, it becomes next to impossible to not be into other music as well. Drumming like this can become very tedious and is very one-dimensional, but the music demands that. I bet John also likes to groove out during a practice session and if you hear his work on Gorguts Colored Sands for example, you know what he is capable of that isn't exactly (only) in the Drums go BRRRRR way. A lot of either former Jazz musicians or Metal drummers tend to look into the other genre very often (Examples would include, but are not limited to: Lille Gruber 'hint hint hint', Patrice Hamelin, Hannes Grossman or Sean Reinert, both you already did watch, but also a lot more). I am a big metalhead but a total newb at drums. Fundamentals are key so instead of getting straight into double bass and blast beats, first rudiments, but also other types of rhythms like rumba b ack beats or trioles are very important. if you have the "spices", you can make your own playing much more interesting, by throwing other influences into your playstyle. Metal in general is very looked down upon with most educated musicians I think, but compared to lets say 20-30 years ago, it has become incredibly technical and musical. In the past, it was who could play fastest and somewhat in time, now it has really branched out I think.

Gonna sound like an old timer but I find stuff like this impressive but lacking something. I am a banger, it's metal drummers that got me to pick up the sticks but in my day (5 mi walk back and forth to school, uphill both ways) I feel like the drummers had more feel or something. Amongst my favorites are Dave Lombardo, Vinnie Paul, Gene Hoglan, to name a few.

He is literally the one guy I can say is a one man band . Your mind won't have enough room to let all the notes in on the first listen . I know I haven't made a patron or PayPal request , but you deserve to see this guy either on your own or reveiwing it. He is instrumental metal and is the most energy and power you may see out there. One of the biggest things that’s being missed in this terrible recording (John has so many better recorded videos on KZfaq) is his Heel Toe Double Bass Technique which is damn near flawless. John and many other Technical Death Metal drummers are taking things to the next level. You have musicians like this guy who isn’t a Death Metal drummer BUT is educated enough to hear and point out the amazing skill needed to pull this type of playing off. Then you have the other type of biased jealous musician who bashes it because they know that it takes skill that they don’t possess to pull off what they are hearing. Then you have just plain Ol’Biased Close Minded musicians who don’t even try to analyze what they are hearing/seeing and just say “It sucks”. I’m not a fan of Jazz BUT I respect it because it requires skill and finesse to play. I’ve been playing drums for 28 years (Mainly Death Metal, Grindcore, 70’s Funk, etc) and the drumming that John Longstreth pulls off is freaking amazing. It takes enormous amounts of practice, focus, timing, stamina, etc to pull off and it’s sad that many don’t know who this guy is and what he can do. He is like the Buddy Rich of Death Metal. Also, new subscriber here. Thank you for being open minded musicians/person! Much respect 🤜🤛!
