Hi Andrew, I am not the person who usually reaches out to someone providing content on social media platforms. Also, because I am an artist who thinks "if I practise enough I can do it myself" therefore I usually don't 'buy' from others. I stumbled over your heron painting about 2 years ago and I was so excited to see a MASTER at work and sharing his techniques, moreover - I was gobsmacked at how brilliant the painting was. So here we are 2 years on and I have subscribed to your channel, I have watched most of your tutorials, some of your podcasts and 'bought' your EPIC MILFORD video. Whilst you don't know me, I feel like I am an old lost buddy so thank you for all your content, I really am amazed at how much I have learnt because as I have said... I am an artist. In fact, I am a mature aged artist (60 years young) with distinctions in painting from College and University, yet you opened my eyes about so many things!!! Thank you so much.

One of our artist fellows pointed out that you can replace the child proof caps on the W&N medium bottles with the screw caps from non corked wine bottles. The width and thread size seems to be exactly the same. I use the ones with a silvered inner seal of the same type W&N use on the inside of their bottles. Gently wash the inside with plain water and allow to dry for a few days incase a little water is hiding behind the edge of the seal, and they're ready to go. The childproofs can be good to begin with, but after a while, little bits of medium can gum them up. My New Zealand wine caps seem to work great. Of course if you do have children of that age, it's best to avoid with the more toxic bottles.

they want the poor artists to spent as much as possible so that "the painting doesn't destroy itself while hanging on the wall because of low-class painting mediums". It is also important to check that a painting doesn't go up in flames because of too much linseed oil.

Hey George, I hear you. Me too. On my bucket list was true Fresco painting. Well, I did it, but talk about cost! A small selection of basic pigments in tiny jars cost a fortune! Not something carried in stores in my neck of the woods, as its too cold to paint fresco here about 8 months of the year. And then getting the plaster! Since 80% of the weight of the pure plaster is water, that's what you're paying for. I drove hours to get a couple of bags from an industrial supplier...but it mixes up tons. Worth it. Like everything else, there's an ocean of cheap crap out there and quality art supplies, especially the really good stuff, is more expensive all the time. Cheers! keep painting...Sean.

viergenoire - it’s like a lot of hobbies, it’s as expensive as you want it to be! I’ve just started dabbling with oils - Winsor & Newton oil paints (Winton range) 37ml £3.50 each. W&N oil paper £10 for 10 sheets which I cut in half so 50p a pop. I use cheap watercolour and acrylic brushes which I already had. £6 for a small bottle of liquin. Cheap as chips 😄

There are plenty of ways to paint on the cheap. Most artists I know are just throwing money away. Buying really expensive paints is a waste of money. People somehow think expensive materials will make their painting better and it wont. A master could paint the most colorful and amazing painting ever with cheap student grade paint. Its all a complete myth. I use super cheap brushes and materials. and gamblin paint which is medium cost. I've used really expensive paints before like Vasari and they are a complete waste of money. Also rosemary and co brushes are another thing painters waste money on. you can find plenty of brushes that are far cheaper that will serve the same purpose and in fact many of my rosemary brushes that i bought back in the day were destroyed within weeks and some of my cheap brushes have lasted 10 years.

Another great video Andrew, thank you. I started off oil painting around 10 years ago using Liquin as I like to paint in thin layers. I have tried more traditional mediums, but always go back to Liquin. I can’t tolerate turps so my solvents of choice are Zest it or Gamsol. I don’t have a problem with Liquin fumes as I only use it in very small amounts. It does have varying drying times though depending on my colour mixes, but I feel confident using it.

I use Windsor fine detail and the light gel from day one, on my 3 years journey so far, and for water features, it does a great job on translucent effects, it is really easy though in ocean pictures to get that yellowing effect on white crest wave highlights, so I use it with darker colors like the cerulean blues and Phaelo greens mixes with white. The sheen you get is really nice and it lasts. Almost like the gloss varnish on a final painting. I use multiple applications on the light gel, for the desired effects. Loved this video! Learned so much! Thanks!!

Hi Andrew. For a large painting i make up a lean bottle of medium approx 200ml and then add about 5ml of stand oil for every separate painting session. So for a 50 hour painting I might add 5ml of stand oil ten times over ten 5hr sessions. I believe the AS mediums are based on the basic Ralph Mayer recipe

Super helpful! Thank you. I'm currently painting with acrylics and ready to take the dive into oils. I completely understand the steps with the 3 dilusions. What I'm not quite understanding is what you do now, with the liquin. Do you just use a smaller ratio of liquin to paint as you progress, making the drying time slower and the paint thiker as you layer up? Or do you use a different medium along with the liquin? Does that make sense??

Hello Andrew. Firstly thank you for sharing your knowledge. All of your videos are fantastic quality. I am a trade painter and decorator 25 years I've been on the brush, and a little dabbling in Bob Ross style landscapes in the last 18 months, I'm loving it. I've also been lucky enough to learn traditional marbling scumbling wood graining techniques ect, all these mentioned techniques require the artisan to make their own mediums for producing a desired effect. All in oils e.g. a basic scumbling medium I create would be 1 part gum turpentine 1 part stand oil plus tinters to tint to whatever color I need. An ingredient I came across many years ago is Terebine, it's an oils drying additive. And it gets oils drying fast. 3 drops in a half cup of medium will set that stuff drying fast. I have wondered whether this Terebine is a secret ingredient used in some of these artist painting mediums for assisting accelerated drying. Just a heads up mate, your works are truly stunning.

Thank you so much,, you delivered as you said. I asked of this long ago and here it is. Your style is a lot easier to get and stick with, just love your style. Wished I had a studio like yours tho. Boy, nice, especially with your big painting in the back of you.

I still have a lot to learn about medium and oil painting...I love the materials and art supplies..Right now I am using some cold wax and just a bit of linseed oil and today I mixed up a linseed oil with a little terps to see how that works...It's a lot of trial and error and Edu. videos like yours that I am so thankful for....I do a lot of mixed media as well

Langridge also make an oleogel, which I have used in the bottom layer of my painting. Then I’m using Langridge impasto medium on top.

I would make sure you use no more than 1 part medium to 3 parts paint. You'll get disadhesion otherwise! Probably better to do your underpainting with a lean medium.

I always use turps first, then turps and linseed, then just linseed. I usually underpaint and start the painting with student grade paint as that usually dries at about the same rate, then use the more expensive brands on top, leave to dry then glaze with liquin. This works for me every time and I've never had any cracking

Wonderful information. I’ve never learned these things in art classes and some through trial and error. Thank you so much
