Android Development on M1 Macbook Air vs Thinkpad T14 Ryzen Pro 4750

In this video, I will be comparing the android development experience on the following laptops:
- [2020] Thinkpad T14 AMD with Ryzen Pro 4750U 8 core laptop with 16GB RAM. This is running the latest version of Manjaro (linux): amzn.to/3v0BSQS
- [2021] Macbook Air M1 with 16GB Ram. This is running macOS Big Sur: amzn.to/2QBNYkg

Finally an interesting and real test of two different laptops. All KZfaqrs just know about the benchmark which does not say so much about two different laptops and others just make comparisons about video editting (programmers like me are interested in other kind of testing!). I'm a Linux user too, so I am interested in getting a ThinkPad as my next machine.

It looks like this was done using the main release of Android studio, so it’s running under Rosetta on the Mac. I’d be interested in seeing these tests run again using the Canary 15 release which has native M1 support.

Definitely would buy one with the Ryzen processor over the Intel (i5-10th gen) model. More cores and its Radeon Vega integrated GPU is faster

do you happen to notice on Manjaro that android studio is decidedly slower when the laptop runs on battery? (I mean lag in the UI). it happens to me with intellij but Andriod Studio is practically an intellij with a different name. Interesting video compared to the many around the web that are not always informative.

Recent AMD laptop processors are boosting CPU after +-10 seconds usage when on battery, so this can be the reason. There are tools to disable this (and shortened a lot battery) on windows, on linux probably too

Bro which one is better 16gb ram in windows laptop or 8 gb ram on Mac for Java & Android development

@@GurjotSingh-lz3dr neither works for me. I need at least 32Gb for any OS. But, if you are not going to do development, then take 8Gb Mac, otherwise Windows.

I have the T14. So good at everything. Probably better than the M1 Mac.

@@BNTNJA processor is Ryzen 7 Pro, very good. Screen is still full HD low power. Speakers are indeed just ok.

You seem to have forgotten about the insane battery life of the M1 (thanks to its 20 W TDP compared to 65 W of the Ryzen 7 4750 'Pro'), which holds up no matter what workload you throw at it. @@prometheus2416 I would say you are wrong, you fail to recognise the added potential such as being more able to play a wider variety of games and even power. It is certainly better for me, but every use case differs. That cannot be ‘factually’ argued against.

Ryzen in current gen is much faster than intel, so go with amd i guess.

I had worked with 256 Gb on a large multimodule project. It was enough, but I couldn't install many AVDs and SDK versions. Also I had to delete temporary files that AS produced (often log file (*.hprof) was about 1-2 Gb). I wouldn't recommend 256 Gb.

Main difference Thinkpad = Quite kids laptop / hacker machine /nukes / looks cool macbook = the cool kids laptop / designed for proffesional works / rich / looks good
