I never heard an " intimate " relationship with God explained and defined; love his comparison about his own children.Love God not simply going thru the ritualistic motions.

I have a question is it bad then to not go to church even if you are in intimate relationship with the Lord. I ask this because of the 10 commandments.

When you have this intimate relationship with Him, you will be doing things His way. Not a matter of right or wrong in the sense of punishment or guilt since you are already completely forgiven for ALL sins EVER! It is totally awesome to be there with Him, especially when you need The Savior the most.

You are supposed to go to church to be around other believers etc. Unless your physically unable. You can search for scriptures in the Bible about it.

holy spirit When you are in a healthy relationship with the Lord, you naturally desire to be in fellowship with others in the light. The healthier you are, the more desirous of "true fellowship!" Fellowship in spirit and in truth! Brother Jim says it perfectly, no guilt, no sense of punishment or fear. I only add to his last line by saying, we don't fellowship with the brethren especially when we're in need of the Saviour. We're always in need of Him. While the Apostle Paul in Hebrews 10:25 admonishes us to not forsake the assembly of the brethren, when light floods our heart, we can't help but love fellowship (koinonia - sharing) with others who have that same light flooding their hearts.

The Bible is chock full of "fear God", "always fear God", "fear God or else", etc. And it's hard for me to relax and be intimate with someone I'm afraid of.

I don't know how your family life was as a child, but I relate the "fear God" to my relationship with my mom. I was afraid to do things I knew were wrong because I was afraid of disappointing her or getting disciplined. My mother was never abusive, so I never feared for my life or safety, but there was a type of reverent fear that kept me in line; we've always had a close relationship, though, and even if she was upset with me, I knew, beyond any doubt, that she loved me and that I was one of the most important things in her life.

I think Andy is trying to help end "the fear" and let us know that the Awesome Almighty Creator of everything has us in mind as the reason it all was done. God wants us to know and love Him as well as He knows and loves us!

I didn't get this understanding until listening to this message and I read your comment (Lininomartino) I can now see that the root cause is from Adam . I hope that it will bring light to you as it is doing for me. The fear of intimacy with God entered in after Adam ate from the tree . Gen. 3:6 ...She saw that the tree was beautiful and its fruit looked delicious, and she wanted the wisdom it would give her. So she took some of the fruit and ate it. Then she gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it, too. 7At that moment their eyes were opened, and they suddenly felt shame at their nakedness. So they sewed fig leaves together to cover themselves. 8When the cool evening breezes were blowing, the mana and his wife heard the LORD God walking about in the garden. So they hid from the LORD God among the trees. 9Then the LORD God called to the man, “Where are you? 10He replied, “I heard you walking in the garden, so I hid. I was afraid because I was naked.” We no longer have to hide in fear because Jesus has brought us into the light and a greater relationship with God where He's in us and we're in Him. Wow that's intimacy! So Holy Spirit I pray that you will come and set us free from the fear of intimacy with God that is rooted in our old Adamic nature and we embrace intimacy with God because of our new nature in Christ. There is no fear in love and I ask that your perfect love to come into our hearts and set us free from all fear and drawing us closer to Our Father, in Jesus name , Amen.

Thank you so much! I could not have said it better. I think the only thing to fear is NOT being with God and since He has made it possible there is no reason not to accept his loving, awesome invitation! There is another Andy Stanley video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rK9lmLCStNOcnYU.html that opened my eyes as well. This one showed me what Paul meant in : Galatians 5:22-23 (MSG) 22-23 But what happens when we live God’s way? He brings gifts into our lives, much the same way that fruit appears in an orchard-things like affection for others, exuberance about life, serenity. We develop a willingness to stick with things, a sense of compassion in the heart, and a conviction that a basic holiness permeates things and people. We find ourselves involved in loyal commitments, not needing to force our way in life, able to marshal and direct our energies wisely. And how it ties in to what Jesus said in : John 15:5-8 (MSG) 5-8 “I am the Vine, you are the branches. When you’re joined with me and I with you, the relation intimate and organic, the harvest is sure to be abundant. Separated, you can’t produce a thing. Anyone who separates from me is deadwood, gathered up and thrown on the bonfire. But if you make yourselves at home with me and my words are at home in you, you can be sure that whatever you ask will be listened to and acted upon. This is how my Father shows who he is-when you produce grapes, when you mature as my disciples. The Fruit of the Spirit is the good that the Holy Spirit does in us and through us. He makes us able to really follow Jesus!

The fear of the Lord is not meaning being afraid of him. Its a good fear meaning you take what he says seriously. He is a good and loving God. Its like a respectable fear.
