Andy Stewart hosted the Scottish music and dance show, The White Heather Club. This was a popular TV programme in the late 1950`s and early 60`s on BBC Scotland. In this clip Andy is singing "Hey Johnny Cope".

Stewart's voice is just perfect for this song! Makes the modern talent sounds anemic, that's for sure...

This was Scotland's counter attack on the rock 'n' roll revolution. My Granny used to like Andy Stewart (well the Grannys of most Scots of a certain age liked him). He was described as one of a host of kilted entertainers but he stood out because he was genuinely entertaining. I've told a few people that it was his son, Ewan Stewart, who played First Office Murdoch in Titanic and they're incredulous, discounting the very noticeable father-son likeness.

Andy Stewart was definitely a kilted entertainer with the emphasis on the entertainer. He also had quite a gift for ad-libbing.

This piece of music was our Regimental March. The Pipers used to play it at 0400 hours (Reveille ). Loved the tune but not when it was played on 32 Bagpipes that had not been tuned as yet. Makes me proud to be Scots.

Can't say I was ever a fan of Andy Stewart, yet here I am, because he enunciates so well - and so this will be perfect to share with a class who don't understand Scots very well. And, actually, it's no bad.

@lehnrik “Hey! Johnny Cope” is a Jacobite song and refers to General Sir John Cope. At the time of the 1745 Jacobite Rebellion General Cope commanded the Government Forces in Scotland.

@Piggycow Andy is referring to the opening sequence of dancers on the show, and makes a quip! "Good evening and welcome once again to the White Heather Club. You`ve just seen dance an eightsome reel, and it`s called an eightsome reel because usually eight people dance it!" (An Eightsome Reel is a Scottish country dance.)

@JCMcGee Did he not send his brother Edward Bruce to assist the Irish Gaels to fight against the Hiberno Normans? Then somehow or other Edward Bruce (not Edward King of England) was crowned High King of Ireland, but the Irish Gaels were never united behind him, some of them even fighting for the Hiberno Normans. Well actually Irish Gaels probably had more in common with a Hiberno Norman than a Scotto Norman. Anyway the Hiberno Normans & the Anglo Normans managed to defeat & kill Edward Bruce

@EwanStewartFan Not sure, maybe early 1960s.

@JCMcGee despite help from his older brother Robert, King of Scots & that was the end of that. So the King of Scots did try to ally himself with the Irish Gaels against the Hiberno Normans, but apart from anything else, maybe the fact that he & his brother were part-Norman themselves could account for the mixed reaction they received from the Irish Gaels. Of course the Gaels in Ireland & Scotland continued to have family & military ties after this, just as they'd always done, but I don't think

Let the wind blow high, let the wind blow low, Through the streets in my kilt I'll go, And all the lassies shout hello Donald where's your troosers. Yeah, the White Heather Club was best avoided by teenagers in the 60s like the plague but Andy, like a lot of artistes of the time, seem to have a touch of style now. Just nobody dare start singing 'Donald, where's your...' - a bl00dy disgrace to Scotland!
