Yes, this type of machine has many smaller parts that work together and it does get complicated. I guess that is part of the reason I enjoy the 403A; bigger parts and fewer of them. I have never seen the insides of a modern day electronic style machine with 100 stitch patterns and led screens etc.

@andytubesewing1953

@@chriscerce4210 Did you mean the hook gears? I think the feed dog is powered by a cogged drive belt coming down from the top arm shaft. Hard to replace that belt I've been told. The 4 gears on the bottom of the machine run the rotary hook if I remember right. I don't have a video for that, but here is a list of videos that other viewers told me helped them for changing the lower gears. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mb98raqo1dW7lXk.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rpiRlql7yqrcp5s.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hcuBhbeV29qxdJs.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p66oabmBycvSmmQ.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Zq6Zpamgu7zTqI0.html

I'm glad I found this channel! Question for you, Andy last night my 513 stopped feeding fabric. I checked everything outside visually and the only thing I noticed is that the feed dogs were not moving. Could this be due to a broken gear? Looking forward to your reply.
@andytubesewing1953
@andytubesewing1953 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching my channel, Juan. Yes, most likely a broken plastic gear. The machine will be 50 YO next year. The plastic is brittle. There are 4 gears on the bottom of the machine to move the feed and the hook. The standard practice is when one goes out to replace them all. Gears are available online for the $10 to $20 range for the set of 4, just Google Singer Model 513 Replacement Gears. It's been a while since I looked, but there were not many good videos on YT for replacement methods. Terry has many manuals and his own guides he wrote for the machine. store.tandtrepair.com/st4134164185.html When installed properly, a quality replacement gear should last over 10 years per my experience on other models. Good luck.

Hi Andy, I have a 534 stylist singer that I replaced the gears and belt on. I reset the timing which works great on the straight stitch but the zigzag timing is off. The needle crosses over in the down position instead of when it is up. What can I do to fix this?
@andytubesewing1953
@andytubesewing1953 Жыл бұрын
I can think of a couple of possibilities here. I think when you change the gears you must reset the FEED TIMING along with the hook timing. When you say you set the timing I assume you mean hook timing? The other item is Timing the Pendulum Movement of the Needle Bar. You can buy a Service Manual that includes the model 538 ( there is not a special manual for 534) and it has instructions for both items I mentioned, along with many other repairs/adjustments for the machine. It only costs $4.99 and you can download it here: manualsoncd.com/product/singer-500-sewing-machine-service-manual-518-538-513-514-533/

Hello dear Andy Tube, Watching your videos has helped me get quite a few Singers working again and I appreciate you very much. Right now I’m working on a Stylist 513 but 2 of the nylon/plastic gears on the underside have disintegrated and I want to replace them, but I can’t find their names or part numbers. I saw that you gave some links to another person, who needed the same info, I followed them but they led nowhere. Will you please help me so that I can order these parts? Are they called hook gears and feed gears? Thank you for your videos and your time. I do hope that you and your family are healthy and happy. Marci Vandercapellen

@andytubesewing1953

Hold on to your hat, Christine. I have information for you. This is a common problem with vintage machines that have sat idle for a long time. The oil in the bushings and other moving metal parts can dry up and the parts get "Stuck". A common way to fix this is to oil the machine properly and gently turn the wheel and even add heat (via a hairdryer) to loosen the old oil. This can take a few minutes to a few hours of work, depending. You can download a free copy of the manual for your 513 from Singer SUpport here: www.singer.com/search/support?title=513 It shows where to oil the machine. I also have a video that goes into a lot of detail about oiling model 513: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fJtyp5uplr7Xonk.html That's the easy part, and if that is all it needs then good news. HOWEVER, model 513 is a model with 4 plastic gears on the bottom of the machine that make the hook rotate and the feed dog work. The gears are old now and very prone to cracking/breaking (if they are not broken yet, they will be) This is a known problem with a dozen Singer models of this type. The most common of the gears to fail is the one on the hook shaft, just below the hoo/bobbin case, which turns the hook b/c it takes the most strain. The other gears can break also. The hook gear is easier to replace than the other 3, but the consensus is if you must replace 1 gear then replace them all. You can buy the gears online, just search for "Singer Model 513 Replacement Gears". There were not many videos made about how to do it, but here are a few to give you some ideas. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mb98raqo1dW7lXk.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rpiRlql7yqrcp5s.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p66oabmBycvSmmQ.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Zq6Zpamgu7zTqI0.html You can also buy a guide for changing the gears from a real pro who wrote a manual for doing it. 30+ years working on SInger machines, including owning his own repair business. store.tandtrepair.com/513gg.html The manual is about $12. The hook gear is less than $10, and the set of 4 gears is usually less than $20. The oldest set of gears that I replaced is now about 8 years old and running strong. Other than those dumb plastic gears. Model 513 is a very nice model, especially for sewing and crafting clothing and home decorating needs.

The bobbin is Singer Class Transparent (clear plastic) bobbin part #172336 and found everywhere in stores and online www.walmart.com/ip/SINGER-Transparent-Bobbins-4-Count/327242779 When the Singer Support webpage is working you can download a free copy of the 513 Instruction Manual here: www.singer.com/support type 513 in the box and hit enter. It has been up & down on & off for a month and when it works you get this page www.singer.com/search/support?title=513 then click on the 513 manual and it will download a PDF. There are also online sellers who sell the manual for download, like this one manualsoncd.com/product/singer-513-instructions-sewing-machine-instruction-manual/ There are also documents sharing websites if you want to see the manual online. You can CAREFULLY download it if you click on all the correct buttons but watch out for the junk they try to give you www.manualslib.com/manual/1052231/Singer-Stylist-513.html If you are looking for an original paper manual they do come up for sale on eBay, etc. sometimes. The eccentric adjusting stud for the feed dog may be turned 180 deg. the wrong way and be set on the low side instead of the high side. That can make the oscillating path of the dog much shorter. @andytubesewing1953
@andytubesewing1953 4 жыл бұрын
Ok, Lupita, let's hope it is something simple. Watch this video about winding the bobbin to be sure the machine IS NOT in bobbin winding mode but IS IN sewing mode. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kLVje7uL2bWrhpc.html When in BW mode the hook and needle do not move. If the machine is in sewing mode and the hook does not rotate there is probably one or more broken plastic gear on the machine. Starting about 4:45 of this video you commented on I show the bottom parts of the machine. There are 4 plastic gears down there and they are all subject to breaking. Replacing the one gear directly below the hook is fairly easy. Replacing the other gears is more difficult but plenty of people have done it. Gears are available online on eBay and maybe Amazon and a Service Manual can be purchased online. Terry made a special 9-page instruction guide for changing those gears out. You can download it from his website here: store.tandtrepair.com/st4134164185.html It cost $10.95 but he will give you 20% off if you use my coupon code andy-h-yt at check out. Take a look at those gears closely and see if any are broken. A good cleaning and oiling fixes about 90% of these type of problems. To start with you can go to13:20 in this video where I'm turning the knob and showing what it moves inside. You can warm the area with a hair dryer to try to free things up. Never force anything to move including that knob. Get some alcohol on those inside parts with a brush, dropper, Q-tips or rag and get them as clean as you can. Try to turn the knob once and awhile but don't force it. If things move a little bit then start putting oil on those inside parts, warm the area and keep trying to turn the knob. When people use other than sewing machine oil it leaves behind a sticky residue that eventually hardens like varnish. Using this method is a good way to start this moving again. You can use this method on the whole machine. Download the free manual here to see all the proper oil points: www.singerco.com/uploads/download/1154_513.pdf Try to use real sewing machine oil. It's cheap to buy at shops, hardware stores, and Walmart. You can try something like WD-40 but then you have to clean it all back off, (it's not oil, and dries hard too) so SMO is really better. That knob is also making the feed dog move some, so if it is stuck then nothing will move. It could be dried oi, dirt, lint and so forth in the feed dog area. That is why I suggest cleaning and oiling. You could work on that knob area for an hour and not fix anything at all, so taking all the covers off, using alcohol and warm air on the whole machine then oiling as per manual is very important. ANY PART THAT IS STUCK can affect other parts because of how the machine woks.

Hi Andy, my feeder does not move on my machine.
@andytubesewing1953

That is fairly common on this model. You are talking about a Model 15, Correct? There are plastic gears on the bottom of the machine that move the feed dog and the hook. They are known to get brittle and break. There are four gears altogether. You can buy new gears (try to find white-colored ones) and replace the old ones. It is a complicated process. If you want to email me at my channel I can send you the parts diagram with part numbers and the service manual that has instructions for working on all the parts of the machine. Then you can decide if you want to try to replace the gears yourself or pay a repair shop. andytube53@gmail.com

Do you think customers were wanting lighter weight machines, or it made them cheaper to ship? I always figured it was to save money only and had not thought of the weight. Singer's modern model 4411 weighs 14.5 lbs where an all-metal 301A weighs about 17 lbs. Not much heavier for all metal.

Women surely wanted lighter sewing machines back then. And that Stylist was hefty for women to move around - 20 plus pounds. Women wanted lighter sewing machine since the war. That was why the Aluminum Free Westinghouse and New Home Rotary machines were introduced in 1947 and they are full size machines and weigh only 16 pounds. I have four new computerized machines and they weigh 11 to 13 pounds. Every pound counts.

I have the 40-page parts list and the 80-page service manual that I bought years ago. You can have them both for free if you like.
