@@andytubesewing1953 Thank Andy, I am already using a Manual for my Sister's 513. My own Singer Futura 900 was in for service, but now I can't raise the bobbin thread. Errr! Can't figure what I'm doing wrong. I'm using my Manual too. Step by step and it still doesn't catch.

@@momzilla9491 I doubt you are doing anything wrong. You've brought up the bobbin thread hundreds of times. It's more likely the timing has been lost on the machine. A slight possibility is the needle bar got pushed up a little. You can check that as I show in this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Y6yVrdCi3tavZqs.html It's usually the plastic bevel gear directly below the hook/bobbin that has broken. It's 50 years old and prone to drying out and crumbling. You can take the cover off the bottom and inspect the gear. It is the one on the farthest left side and the first gear I touch in this video right at the 5 seconds mark: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oJNjp9WltrPepGQ.html I do not have a video of changing it out. It costs about $10 to $15 last I bought it. There may be videos of it on YT or you can buy the service manual here for $5 manualsoncd.com/product/singer-500-sewing-machine-service-manual-518-538-513-514-533/ If it is the gear you'll be the one to decide if it is worth your $$, time & effort to replace the gear and reset the timing. I hope I'm wrong, but experience says it is a bad gear.☹

@@andytubesewing1953 LOL I have and printed the entire service manual, because I always had issues with the bobbin tension. I did a great cleaning etc., but couldn't get clear access to tighten the last screw--- so I brought it to a Repair Shop two weeks before 2018 Xmas. Anyway, I didn't touch the machine until two weeks ago, and it made a bird's nest. Now it won't pick up the bobbin thread. I have bought almost every foot for that Slant Shaft sewing machine. Sob, I don't think it deserves another penny although it is one hell of a heavy, heavy duty machine. Thanks for your great suggestions Andy. I'll check to see if the needle bar moved, but my luck with this 1974 Model has been next to nil so far. Sob!

@@momzilla9491 😢😖Sob is right! It's too sad. All the machines I restored for my wife are the all-metal slant needle models. Her daily driver is her 301A with a 403A for zigzag sewing and a very old Brother edger. Simple clean and grease once per year and she oils before each new project. I'm amazed after all these years how clean and well they sew. Hope you find a machine you love in the future. Take care.

Thanks for the tutorial, I bought this machine when it was new in 1974. I was in high school, I saved my babysitting money and it was/is a joy to purchase and own. I went on to other crafts in the mean time and took this machine out of storage in order to make masks now. I probably hadn't used it for decades, I am grateful that I found your site, thanks so much. I also own a Stylist 457, that someone gave me. I've watched those videos also. With your guidance, I't up and running!!! The Instruction Manual is one of the most complete that Singer ever put out with 152 pages. Of course, it covers all about the machine and using it and oiling, etc. but it also goes into detailed directions for every stitch the machine can make and how to do them, what the settings should be for the different stitches, several sewing, and hemming techniques and how to use all the attachments. A timing issue or a broken gear on the hook shaft. Are you sure the hook itself is turning when you turn the handwheel? This machine is known to have a plastic gear on the hook shaft under the hook/bobbin. It's like 50 years old now and the plastic gets brittle and the teeth break off and the hook stops turning. There are actually 4 gears on the bottom of the machine but the hook gear is always the first one to go out in my experience. Take a look at this video and pause it at 06:21 when my finger is on the hook gear kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ecqVlJqmr6-xcXU.html that's the gear I'm talking about. You could also/or have a timing issue where the needle point to hook p[oint is not timed properly, or the needle bar could have slipped during a needle strike and is now at the wrong height. You can buy the service manual for $4.99 here: manualsoncd.com/product/singer-500-sewing-machine-service-manual-518-538-513-514-533/ parts of this video show how to set the height of the NB and you can use it to just check the height of yours: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Y6yVrdCi3tavZqs.html This page on my channel lists playlist by machine part or function and you can find info about timing setting and tension assemblies to give you some ideas www.youtube.com/@andytubesewing1953/playlists?view=50&sort=dd&shelf_id=2

The bobbin for the Model 513 is Singer Part No. 172336 better known as Singer Class 66 (plastic) bobbin. They are very common and available here in the USA. I found sellers on Canada eBay site (most from the USA): www.ebay.ca/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2380057.m570.l1311.R1.TR1.TRC0.A0.H0.Xsinger+class+66.TRS0&_nkw=singer+class+66+bobbins&_sacat=0 There is also a metal class 66 bobbin if you prefer. You can certainly clean and repair your tension unit if needed. I have a video series on how to do that for your style of unit. The thumb nut may attach a little bit differently, but you'll see that. Here is the series: kzfaq.info/sun/PLsCOZgzzaiKJaeFB_GW97NsW5GYM7KD9U I also did a number of videos about model 513 in case you need to make other adjustments or change the motor belt: kzfaq.info/sun/PLsCOZgzzaiKLELksv_-MWE7tiAuzOgQj0 Finally, it is always helpful to have the Instruction Manual on hand for any machine and you can download a free copy from Singer at this link: www.singer.com/sites/default/files/outdated_product/1154_513_0.pdf BTW, Singer also has bobbins and other good information: www.singer.com/Singer-Class-66-Bobbins-Transparent If you live near a Walmart they may have them or have 3rd party sellers who sell them. www.walmart.ca/en/ip/Plastic-Class-66-Bobbins-12-Pkg/PRD59TBT0QRQMP0 Thanks for watching my channel and good luck with your "new" 513.

Hello Andy.. where can I get bobbins for this machine?
@andytubesewing1953
@andytubesewing1953 2 жыл бұрын
It is bobbin #172336, plastic, one of the mos common bobbins on the planet. You can often find them at Walmart, Jo-Ann Stores, Michaels, fabric stores, and sewing centers. I've bought mine here for years now; www.ebay.com/itm/380304750537?hash=item588bedf7c9:g:6GwAAOSwRXRZVIzn for years Lui was the only one who sold the Singer Branded bobbins. Other online sellers have them now and sometimes for less; this seller has been in business for years also; www.ebay.com/itm/373043155241?epid=664504770&hash=item56db1ad129:g:SjsAAOSw0oRiDTT6 over the years I've found the branded ones work better and last longer but that's just my opinion. They are called "Class 66" bobbins and many sellers sell copies without the brand. Model 513 came from the factory with plastic bobbins compared to the original class 66 bobbins made of metal that were for models like the 66 & 99K machines. Good luck, and thanks for watching my channel.

Hi, Tabitha. My 513 had a little pigtail or corkscrew made of thick wire that is held on by the screw that holds the needle clamp to the needle bar. Not all the 500 Stylist machines had this extra thread guide, so if you do not have it do not worry but just continue the thread through the slot/slit on the bottom of the needle clamp and then to the needle. That will lineup the thread to the needle just fine, and prevent it from sagging and getting caught while you sew. You can download a FREE copy of the original Singer Instruction Manual directly from Singer at this link: www.singer.com/search/support?title=513 It has 64 pages of information all about using your machine and attachments, including threading the needle. In the instructions for threading, they DO NOT mention the pigtail and DO NOT show it in the picture. I'm sorry I did not mention in the video that the part was optional at the Singer Store and not on all models. Best of luck sewing the masks and thank you for doing that. Be Safe.

What happens if I put the thread in the bobbin and put it in properly but now it’s skipping stitches? How do I fix that?
@andytubesewing1953
@andytubesewing1953 6 ай бұрын
Most common cause has to do with the needle. It may be too dull to sew correctly. It may be wrong type for the material, the wrong size for the thread you are using, not installed properly, or bent. The needle is the cheapest part of a sewing project. Try a new needle. Thread may be old or cheap and dragging on the eye of the needle. The sewist (you) may be "helping" the fabric while guiding it along. If the fabric is pushed a little or held a little that messes up the needle-to-hook timing and makes skips. The bobbin case, hook, Tension Assembly need cleaning and lint removal. The needle bar is not set to correct height which causes the hook point to miss catching the needle tread loop. The machine may not be lubricated properly/completely. Draggin/sticky parts movement causes skips. Let the feed dog move the fabric; that is its job. The pressure on the presser bar/foot is not set correctly. If the presser is too soft or hard the fabric won't move in time with the needle stroke and the needle thread is not at the correct place/time to be picked up by the hook point. Try playing with the presser bar tension using more or less pressure. The hook is not timed properly to the needle bar. (loss of timing). You can download a FREE copy of the Instruction Manual for Model 513 from the Singer Support Page here: www.singer.com/search/support?title=513 It has a chart for type/size of needle/thread for fabric you use, some cleaning info, lubrication info, etc. You can buy & download a copy of the Service Manual for $4.99 at this link: manualsoncd.com/product/singer-500-sewing-machine-service-manual-518-538-513-514-533/ It has service and repair info including timing info, needle bar, and presser height info, etc.

Part #155727 has nothing to do with the needle bar. start about 1:24 in this video and you'll see me holding the needle clamp, screw, and pig tail in my hand; kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p9NdhM5k1tGdd4U.html That pigtail part was used on several SInger models of that decade. It is part #319721. No one makes/sells a new copy of that, but I did a Google search for the part number and a few came up, like this one; www.bonanza.com/listings/Singer-252-Fashionmate-Needle-Clamp-319728-w-Thread-Guide-319721-Screw/499497061?search_term_id=131274526 That is the exact pigtail from the factory included on every model 513 Singer made. The needle clamp/screw is a different part number than yours so may or may not fit your machine, but I'm assuming you have the needle clamp and the screw on your needle bar. You can shop around for a better price if you like. You could probably make something like it using a paperclip, too.

@andytubesewing1953

"or watever"... so, the nose cover doesn't have a thread guide so I'm guessing you mean the take-up lever that you pull the thread through from the back to the front after going around the tension assembly. BTW, you can download a free copy of the Instruction Manual direct from Singer at this safe link: www.singer.com/search/support?title=8834 The machine threading instructions are on page 21. When you rotate the handwheel towards you (counterclockwise) the take-up lever moves up and down and sometimes goes a little inside the nose cover of some models (I've never seen an 8834 in-person) If you don't see the take up lever moving can you see if the needle bar is moving up and down? Maybe the take-up lever broke off. You can remove the nose cover and see what's behind it by removing one small screw on the end of the nose cover.

I am struggling with thread tension, lower seems to be super tight but when pulled manually it runs freely, but then when sewing it comes out ‘tight’ top tension is super loose, but if I tighten the top it jams and snaps every time, any thoughts or ideas how to improve? Everything has been fully removed and re-built clean…
@andytubesewing1953
@andytubesewing1953 2 жыл бұрын
Sorry you're having a problem, Simon. So you removed, cleaned, reinstalled, and zeroed out the tension unit? Or removed all the parts on the machine? Please answer that question, thanks. I'd not worry about the bobbin case tension. It seems tight because something is wrong up above. You've proven that by just pulling on the bobbin thread manually and proven it "runs free". So, what is wrong up above is the question. You can test the upper tension assembly easily. Pull out the upper thread and starting at the spool of thread run the thread thru the tension assembly and thru the take-up lever and stop there. Don't do the final threading down to the needle. With the presser bar DOWN and the tension dial set at 3 just pull the needle thread away from the take-up lever, like pull it horizontally to your left. Do you have any tension at all? You should see the check spring (take-up spring) being pulled upward by the thread and feel a drag on the thread. Now turn the dial to zero and pull the thread again. It should float right along with barely noticeable drag; only a tiny bit if any. Now go back to 3 on the dial and SLOWLY pull the thread again while SLOWLY turning the tension dial from 3 to 4 to 5 to 6 etc. You should feel more and more tension on the thread as you go until at full tension the thread ALMOST breaks. Do that and let us know the results, OK? It's hard to diagnose a machine over the internet and without hands-on, so you be the hands. Also want to mention how many, many times it turns out the threading path was wrong, the needle eye had a burr, the bobbin case was threaded backward, or the tension assembly was installed wrong, or the stud is bent and pinching the tension discs, or the take-up lever was installed wrong, or, well... you get the idea. If needed, here is a decent video I made for working on a tension unit like yours. It has 42K views so you can see you are not the only one with tension issues. You could use it as a reference if needed. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hrlzjJpjx7CXqGw.html

Welcome to Andy Tube, Leah. Instructions for replacing the bulb are on page 55 on the Instruction Manual for Model 513 that you can download FREE from Singer at this link; www.singer.com/sites/default/files/outdated_product/1154_513_0.pdf It is always good to download the instruction manual and this one is 64 pages full of great info showing all the features of the 513 and how they work and the best way to use them. Basically, you push in gently on the light bulb ( push to the right) and then turn the bulb towards you a little bit then you can pull it out to the left. The electrical contacts inside the socket are springs and on the bulb are two little posts that slide into grooves in the socket. To install the bulb you put it in the socket and turn until the pins line up into the groves and push the bulb into the socket a short distance, like 1/16 inch or less, then turn the bulb away from you. That puts the little posts into another grove and "locks" them in with the contact springs pushing on the bulb and holding it in place. So, push in and turn bulb towards you a short distance then pull the bulb out and push in and turn away from you to install the bulb back in. You can see me do this on a different model starting at 4:30 in this video; kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q7N7ac2ktq7TlY0.html I also have a playlist of 20+ videos about model 513 if you need more info about it. @andytubesewing1953
@andytubesewing1953 3 жыл бұрын
Don't be too quick to blame yourself; it could be the machine. I'm guessing the machine is new to you? It could be you bent the needle, threaded it backward or it is not all the way up into the needle clamp. That's easy for you to check. You can download the Instruction Manual from Singer for Free at this link: www.singer.com/search/support?title=513 It has 64-pages of info all about the machine. It is also very possible that on or more of the 4 plastic gears on the bottom of the machine have crumbled or broken and the hook that catches the needle thread is just not rotating any longer. The machine is almost 50 Y.O. now. You can open the bobbin cover slide plate and just watch the hook while you turn the handwheel toward you. You should see the hook (metal circle around the bobbin holder) rotating counterclockwise. If it is not doing that then you have a bad gear. The most common gear to wear out is the one right below the hook. Take a look at this very short video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oJNjp9WltrPepGQ.html At the start of the video, I'm touching the two white gears that make the hook turn. I had just replaced them. A few seconds later I am touching the two black gears that also make the feed dog move; they can break also. New gears are fairly cheap online and you can find sellers by searching for "singer model 513 gears". You can buy a single gear, like the hook gear, or sets of gears, or all 4 gears. I don't have a video for changing the gears and retiming the machine, but maybe there is one/some on YT. I bought a guide written by an expert repairman and I followed that to change the gears. It was $10.95 and downloadable here: site.tandtrepair.com/StylistLine.html I have done business with Terry for years now and he gives my viewers 20% off whatever they buy, just use andy-h-yt at checkout if you buy something. There may be other places to buy instructions too, IDK. So, the old saying "Hope for the best, Plan for the worst" I guess. Hope it is just a bent needle, but plan on looking at those gears. The instruction Manual includes info for removing the bottom cover if you've never done that. Good Luck, and thanks for watching my channel. ✨

@Andy Tube WOW! Thank you so much for replying! I was hoping someone might see this comment and know what to do. You're right! The machine was my grandmothers but is totally new to me. (also it might be a slightly different model.. the mechanics look almost the same but the design is slightly different, I have a feeling it might be older.) Upon further inspection it is actually Singer Stylist model 466 from 1968. So, I just finished sewing my first two lines after getting it tuned up and all of a sudden, no bobbin thread will pick up. I think that the hook... or metal circle around the bobbin holder has stopped rotating. When I turn the hand wheel towards me nothing happens (no rotating) under the bobbin cover slide plate. I thought I remembered something rotating when I threaded the bobbin the first time. It must be the gears... Thank you for those links! I will definitely check out the video just so I know what exactly is happening. But, since I JUST got it re-tuned I'm hoping the shop will be able to take a quick look at it. Especially since replacing them might get tricky. I'm planning on calling them. That same shop that did the refurbishment tried to sell me hard on trading in this machine for a new one because they said it would be very tricky to learn on. I figured: these machines are meant to be repaired and to last... maybe I'm wrong, but I think it will be worth it. Again, Thank you so much!!!

@@briannesimon5862 What a difference a Model number makes! The 466 has a very different mechanical system on the bottom, two pulleys, and a timing belt. If the hook, pulleys, and belt are not turning that means a plastic gear on the top of the vertical shaft has failed. Almost every shop will not replace the gear, even though the gear only costs $10. It take s a couple hours of work and they want to sell you a new machine instead. If they will do it, don't be surprised that they may want up to $200 for the labor. That is why I made a video to do it yourself kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g5mSededu5e9Zqc.html Thousands of viewers have replaced the gear themselves. If you do not feel you can do it then it is up to you what you will pay for someone else to do it. When I restore a model like the 466 I replace the gear and motor belt, change the bulb to LED and replace the rubber bed cushions (feet) a machine like that I sell for about $150. The 466 is a very nice model. It is actually not hard to use once you read the manual and practice with it. It's a strong versatile model made for general sewing and clothes making which is maybe why your Gmom bought it. Up until the early '60s ( and on some models, later years), SInger used metal gears that last forever. A new gear, even though plastic, can last up to 20 years of normal use. Here is the 466 manual: www.singer.com/search/support?title=466 BTW, the gear change video has been watched in about 50 countries, and several viewers have told me that they could not/did not want to do the work, but had a friend or relative help them, or hired a mechanic in the neighborhood or at church, especially a motorcycle mechanic or yard equipment repair person, and a few even went to their local high school or trade school and the instructor made fixing the machine an extra credit project for the class who used my video to do the work. Look to see if the hook is rotating around the bobbin case when you turn the handwheel. There are 4 plastic gears on the bottom, and the hook drive gear and hook shaft gears are the first to crack and break. Then the hook will not rotate to catch the thread. A common problem with this model. Remember it is 50 years old now. Hi Andy, how to fix the feeder teeth going only back
@andytubesewing1953
@andytubesewing1953 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, Reina. Those teeth are called the feed dog. Normally they move from the front to back for normal sewing. If you want them to move from back to front, which is reverse sewing, you push AND HOLD it the button in the center of the stitch width dial on the front, right side of the machine. When you let the button go then the feed dog goes back to normal front to back movement for normal sewing. I think this is what you are asking? How to use the reverse sewing, like to back-tack and end a seam? If not, then just ask your question in Spanish or your regular language and I will try again to answer. Thank you for watching my channel.

@@reinavilaro1643 OK, I get it. The plastic gears on the bottom. Sure, one gear turns the feed shaft. It is impressive you replaced all 4 gears. Nicely done. Also, reset the timing! ✨😉 You're a good mechanic then, congratulations, Reina.

I don't see what you are talking about at all for the second to last threading step. I have a slot on my screw clamp but not the pigtail that you are talking about and I have the singer stylist 513?

Then you are missing that part. The screw that holds the needle clamp onto the needle bar also holds that pigtail. It is Singer Part No. 319721 and technically called "Needle Clamp Body Thread Guide". You can see it a little better in the needle bar video for this model, kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p9NdhM5k1tGdd4U.html What is odd is the parts manual for model 513 show and names that little thread guide, but the instruction manual does not show it. I know! 👀 BTW, you can download a free copy of the original 64-page Instruction Manual directly from Singer at this link: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pamYaZRnx53Og40.html The manual is nicely done and shows all the features of the machine, how to use them and the attachments, basic sewing instructions, cleaning and oiling info too. This type of "pigtail" thread guide, in various shapes, is on several SInger models. Here is a video of a Model 404 where I show removing the needle clamp, screw, and pigtail from the needle bar and show those parts in my hand, kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pamYaZRnx53Og40.html I have used a screwdriver to loosen the screw and at about 6:40 I remove the screw with my fingers and show the parts. On model 404 the Part No. is 172225, is called "Needle Clamp Thread Guide", and shaped slightly different than the one on model 513/533. Thanks for watching my channel, William, and good luck.

@@williamstorey5024 You're welcome, but if you are having problems I don't think this will help much. It does help wide zigzag stitches look better though. Welcome to Andy Tube. The on/off switch for the machine is above the terminal where the cord plugs into the machine. It turns the motor and light on and off. There is not a separate switch for the light. Actually, my 6 Y.O. granddaughter filmed it with her $59 camera. For her first video, I thought she did OK. I mean we looked at your "Feeling Myself" video on your channel and thought "can't see anything", so just saying... Sorry you are having a bad day, Alora, but how about we do this. You can go to the SInger Company website and download a free PDF copy of the original Instruction Manual. www.singer.com/search/support?title=513 It has drawings and words explaining how to use the features of the model 513, including winding the bobbin and threading the needle. Then, once you have mastered those skills, you could make and post a video that is up to your standards on your KZfaq channel and come back here and give us the link to it. Then we could add a card and link on this video to your video so people could have a better experience. What say you? Care to put your video where your mouth is? You know... contribute something positive to the KZfaq Community instead of just dissing other people's videos. It's interesting that our video has 30,500 views, but you are the first one to complain about our attempt to share and help people on KZfaq. We'll be waiting for your video...
