Ane Brun - "Hallelujah" (Leonard Cohen) 2002

This is me performing "Hallelujah" by Leonard Cohen for my good friend Marin, back in 2002, for a small group of friends celebrating her upcoming wedding.
This was before I had released any albums or done all of those hundreds of shows...
It was when I was a university student and before I knew I was going to be a full time musician.
I was not so used to performing for my old friends, so I'm pretty nervous here, messing up the words and the chords a little...
I chose this song for my friend because we had been so lucky to see Jeff Buckley perform it live at the Roskilde Festival in 1995.
And I remember by friend crying, even though it was the first time she ever heard him sing.
Jeff Buckley was really something special.. I've recorded one of his songs, "Morning theft" and I did a tribute show for him back in 2004. I don't want to think about all the amazing music we might have missed out on since he passed so early.
I think I listened to him so much in the 90's that it has definitely influenced my singing and phrasing...
And this song "Hallelujah" has almost been worn out since then in so many different versions.
But oh gosh!
What an amazing song it is...!

I was very fortunate to see Leonard Cohen perform this song a couple of times - but never had the pleasure to seeing Jeff Buckley live - both were treasures, much missed - it is wonderful to see and hear you at your musical beginnings - wonderful memories all around.

I'm a huge Leonard Cohen and Jeff Buckley fan (and an Ane Brun fan)...and you did this song justice, this is really lovely, so stripped back like this...and I actually like the camera sound in the background.. I saw you perform recently in Brussels and what you said about not settling for crumbs of love was absolute truth ❤️

Thank you Ane, as always, you know how to reach us. Thank you for being down to earth and connecting with us in these ways. I live for your stories as much as your music. You know, I also am dumfounded when people with angelic voices are nervous to sing, it's so fragile and beautiful..I'm so glad you didn't hide away like Nick Drake though..I'm glad you grew into the performer you are so we could all be graced by your presence. Much love. Oh, and I'm SURE that both Buckley and Leonard would have been honoured and so blessed to hear you cover this..and both I know would have wanted to sing with you. 💗

I like the sea images used before, so funnily enough, the camera sound was a reassuring familiarity. A soothing performance of a poet's song.

Many, many thanks for sharing this, Ane. Jeff, Leonard and you merged in one, that's a great gift for our hearts and ears. Like this, he (they) live on, although the voice is no longer here to sing... their spirit though is much alive and present. Tusen takk 💙

Before I found you, Ane, I was lucky enough to find Jeff Buckley. My oldest brother turned me onto him, and he did it with this same song, of course. I was able to commune with the music of Jeff Buckley for a number of years before he died. This version you did all those years ago when you were in college is just as magical to me, because I have so much history with your music and a connection with you (via social media) like I was never able to have with other favorite musicians through the years. Thank you for sharing this gem of a video. Just seeing you at that age and hearing your voice is a healing gift to me. ❤️Nan

Come back to WOMAD, have another go. That's where I found you. You are a channel, a conduit for music. The neutrinos were pulled towards you, found you, as you put in the countless hours, your melodic and rhythmic expressions offered up a gateway for stories to pass through, people just watch you and listen to you because that is the language in which you are fluent.
