I met her son Iain many years ago at a party at Edinburgh University. I remember he said he loved winding people up saying he was half Scottish / half Japanese... purely on the back of his Mum's alter ego; Aneka. He was a nice down to earth guy.

This song was in the UK charts and I used to hear it every morning on the school bus radio when I was in 1st year at high school in 1981. I really miss those days.

I was a boy, this was on the radio all day everywhere. It was pretty common to hear at the mall, or the arcades. Over 20 years later, a friend of mine was playing this cars game, with cops and guns. And this song comes out. My chest had this nostalgic feeling.

If this was relased in 2019, there would be articles all over titled: "Why Aneka's Japanese Boy is problematic"

Brilliant idea and production. Perfect combination of oriental and European style in clothing dance and singing style. So funny so dynamic makes you woonder every second if you are looking at tv show from Japan or from a disco in Great Britain. Love it after so many years. She is sweet alert delicate and original. What can I say. I can not get enough of it. The story pretends to be a sad one but the performance leaves you with a happy feeling. Strange but not unusual for that era (The artists from various bands were smiling and seem to have fun and enjoy themselves no matter what they were singing about ...unless it was hard a rock band).

I'm Japanese. It's YMO (Techno-pop band) style sound and Kayôkyoku (Japanese pops) style melody. If someone say "It's not Japan" who is thoughtless xD

Mary Sandeman, better known by her stage name Aneka /əˈniːkə/ (born 20 November 1947 in Edinburgh, Scotland), is a Scottish singer. In 1981 she reached number one in the UK Singles Chart with her song "Japanese Boy". She was well known for the Oriental image she adopted for the song. After her brief foray into pop, she reverted to her real name and re-established herself as an accomplished singer of Scottish traditional music. This music career having begun in Scotland as a teenager and continued up until her first hit, as Mary Sandeman. It was only at the time of the 1981 hit that she changed her name.

This song flopped in Japan, couple years later a Japanese idol covered it renamed as "Chinese Boy", and flopped again. Just a weird fact of the day I guess.

Before anyone gets offended by this music video, just remember that the Japanese (from Japan) are actually ok with foreigners wearing Japanese clothes.

I think that she is a successful folk singer in Scotland and is really more of a mezzo voice...I remember hearing her sing a folk song and she has a truly lovely natural instrument.
