In a result that is still debated almost 40 years later, Anett Poetszch won the OGM at Lake Placid, beating Linda Fratianne on home turf.

Although Dick Button was very complimentary about Annette's performance, it was not as good as Linda Fratianne's. However, Annette was got a great lead in the school figures, I believe, and that gave her the ultimate win of the gold medal. So sad that Linda didn't win but also sad that school figures were totally eliminated from competitions. I believe that school figures (compulsories) do have a place in "figure" skating just not the major piece they once had.

Annett's performance was not that much different than that of Fratianne's. I even think Annett had a bit of charm about her in this LP that Linda didn't. She finished 3rd in the LP while Linda was 2nd, which was correct. Maybe Sandy Lenz arguably could've been 3rd or * yikes * even 2nd in the LP, but she had no reputation.

poetzch was over marked in the short and lackluster in the long did not deserve to win overall.......terrible

@@AT-jm4dl this was an absolutely horrible performance and you can't even compare it to Linda's. That's why they changed the rule and made the short program a higher percentage than the figures correctly. It's a new rule have been in place Linda would have won the gold.

@@AT-jm4dl Yes....but Anett should have been placed 6th-8th in the short. The judges manipulated results in the short to assure Poetzsch a win

彼女は規定で２位に約５点の大差をつけ、逃げ切って金メダルを獲得した。前年の世界選手権ウィーン大会が酷い出来だったので心配されたが、表現力も身に付けたのが立派だった。但しＮＨＫの中継で福島幸雄アナウンサーが「技のペッチか、美のフラチアニか」と言ってたのが、力が入りすぎてて苦笑した。

If the ordinals system that was implemented starting at the 1981 Worlds, here's what the results would be: GOLD - Fratianne - 4.2 ordinals SILVER - Poetzsch - 5.2 BRONZE - Biellmann - 9 4th - Lurz - 9.2 5th - Allen - 10

They should have changed it a year earlier this is just a dreadful performance. It's hard to believe this woman was a 2x world champion and Olympic champion mainly really because of the figures.

@@averyfrederick5745 I think the results of Lake Placid had a lot to do with the switch to the ordinals system starting in 1981. We shouldn't forget controversial Olympic results are what led to scoring changes in figure skating. In fact the men's and ladies winners from 1972 scored so high in figures, they could afford to finish 4th and 7th respectively in their free skates and still win the gold. That's what led to the introduction of the technical program in 1973.

There are no 'if' in a sport! You have to accept what the rules were at 1980 Olympics. Or do you Americans also admit that at 1990 Worlds Jill Trenary shouldn't have won with that awful free skate and Mitori Ito should have won Worlds? Or you don't say a thing just because Trenary was American?

Without the figures Biellman would have won gold. She was a better tech skater and performer.

"Nice triple toe loop. It looked clean from here." It did? Where was Dick sitting? It's possible he was in a position where he couldn't see her second foot touching down. And before that a single salchow followed by a squirrelly double loop. Annet Poetzsch was 4th (SP) and 3rd (FS) but because she was first in figures, she won gold. Denise Biellmann was 2nd (SP) and 1st (FS), but because she was 12th place in figures, she came in fourth overall. So without figures, Denise would have won. Some interesting trivia about Anett I read on her wiki: She married Katarina Witt's brother, but divorced in 1990, and their child was the German pair champion in 2000 with partner Robin Szolkowy, who rose to international fame with his next partner Aliona Savchenko. This was yet another Olympics where the figure skating was tarnished by compulsory figures. Although Denise Biellmann won the free skating, I was not totally pleased with her performance, and at the time felt terrible that I thought she may never win a gold medal in Worlds or anything. If you look in the records, Denise also won the free skating in the 1978 European Championships two years before this Olympics but was 4th then also, to Anett Poetzsch, again! Finally, Anett skipped the 1981 Worlds, and Denise had worked on her figures like crazy to come in 4th in figures, and won the 1981 Worlds. That made me happy for her and she had a good pro career after that. Even if you believe that figures are as important to free skating as the barre is to ballet, which I don't, why should it ever have been judged as part of skating competitions after the very early years of skating? You go to the ballet to watch people do ballet, not to do preparatory exercises at the barre. And you go to skating to see skating. It made skating like the biathlon, where they ski and shoot.

A few missed opportunities in her jumping passes but once she settled down, she put forward a strong performance. She had very nice height and ice coverage in her 2Axels. Very nice Flying Camel, and in general, she was a nice spinner. I really appreciate her commitment to her choreography and her determination to deliver the best performance regardless of a few missteps. Good job 👍👏👏

I would not call that performance strong in comparison to other skaters in that competition. Almost all the jumps were wonky. The opening layback spin was pitiful. A lot of "skating on two feet". I could go on.

This is got to be the worst Olympic gold medal performance ever. She had the ugliest positions, Good shelves crooked in the air just not a good skater in my opinion.

@@mattg.812 It was a weak field that year, so yes this was one of the best in this field just due to how bad the field is. If you did 2 triples that already put you near the top. This was placed 3rd behind Biellmann and Fratianne which was correct. The others didn't skate better, Marie Allen is a more stylish skater but did 0 triples, and Watanabe did not skate well, and Lurz is clearly inferior. And with her lead in figures on Fratianne it was enough to win.

Linda Fratianne deserved to win the gold medal. This skate here is going to give me nightmares. I guess she could of just laid down on ice and took a nap and still won. Sad.

Linda is one of the most overrated skaters ever. I would have had her bronze behind Biellmann as well considering Biellmann was light years better than Fratiannezzzz in free skating. Poetzsch was about the same and much better in figures.

@@tylerbam7183 There was some strange scoring Dagmar Lurz bronze? Ugh Ugh. I think Linda Fratianne was rooked too, as well as Biellman. If the figures helped Poetszch win and Lurz get a bronze, glad they were done away with.

Seems CRAZY to be 4th in the Short and 3rd in the Long....but STILL walk away with a Gold Medal! 🤨 Compulsory Figures > Actual Skating 🤔🤯

She has never been robbed of a medal and she won many ridiculous gift medals she did not deserve- bronze at the 80 worlds (Watanabe was robbed), gold at the 80 Nationals (Marie Allen was robbed), gold at the 77 Nationals (Burg was robbed), winning the free skate at the 78 worlds (this was a joke, she deserved 5th in the long, but still would have won silver overall).

Horrible skating. Missed jumps, stiff, abrupt moves, seems like she is just going through the motions at slow speed.

@@floskate Fratianne was overrated and should not have even medaled. I hated her skating and even worse she was and still is a whiny arrogant bitch, still complaining about her silver all these years later. Thank goodness she is forgotten today, irrelevant as she deserves. Denise should have medaled over Lurz atleast even with figures. Her free skating blew everyone away, that should have atleast compensated some for her figrues weakness.

Poetzsch was slightly overscored in figures and heavily so in the SP. Fratianne would not have won the gold, even with a win the FP.

Bah for me Fratianne was a generally overmarked skater herself. I saw both skates and for me the FPs were basically the same and I know for a fact Poetzsch is much better in figures so it makes sense she won. The only times Fratianne beat Poetzsch she bombed the free skating anyway, a fact many forget, which did not happen here.
