Angela Davis on Reissue of Her 1974 Autobiography, Her Editor Toni Morrison, Internationalism & More

Activist and scholar Angela Davis has released a new edition of her 1974 autobiography, first published and edited by Toni Morrison nearly 50 years ago. The book details Davis’s remarkable early life, from growing up in a section of Birmingham, Alabama, known as Dynamite Hill due to the frequency of bombings by the Ku Klux Klan, to her work with the Black Panther Party and the U.S. Communist Party. It also follows her 16-month incarceration, during which she faced the death penalty and was eventually acquitted on all charges, which influenced Davis’s focus thereafter on transforming the criminal justice system and building a movement for abolition. The edition includes a new introduction, which links the racial justice uprisings and events of the past decade to her lifelong learnings and work. “What struck me was how much has changed,” says Davis, on her process of publishing the new edition. “Both how much has changed and how little has changed.”

I got radically serious brain injury from Goldman Sachs Gorter Family Foundation. Six months unconcious six and a half years ago on a private prison island controlled by a missionary. New Zealand the world's last colony. Woman's prison is 70% maori. World's highest suicide rate. Survive on food powder in creek water. Got enough solar to wok this little phone. Shuffle from bed to couch and beg fir help. NZ had maori battalion. America had black battalion so Hell's Angels opened there first non American chapter here. Maori was the only language Hitler couldn't interpret and the people had centuries of trench war expertise. Polynesian Panther got deleted same time as black Panthers. Black Power still operate. Angela fondly remembers getting support from so far away, back then. Nothings changed but the weather, and our hair went Grey.

I'm glad Toni was an editor in those days for random house, otherwise we would not have a lot of great books that were published during the civil rights movement. If you take note many books about civil rights on those days came out of random house, because of Toni Morrison's influence.

i dont understand why people keep referring Angela Davis to the Black Panther Party. she was in that organization for barely 6 months! and for good reasons. I read her autobiography myself, and I urged everyone to do the same because in that book she wrote in detail about the rampant mysogyny in the BPP and why she decided to leave. my memory is failing me rn, but i remember reading her description of how she even got "punished" and ostracized from some organizing circles, because of her membership in the US communist party at the time.

She doesn't want to be famous. She wants the message to be famous and spread around so that people can start thinking outside of imperialist, capitalist, heterosexual, patriarchy. It's abolitionist thinking that is rooted in feminism.

How to ruin the legacy of a fine writer. Imagine Margaret Atwood doing a biography of Tony Blair, or any other political figure? Academic suicide. The most evil part of it is that Goodman and Davis are well educated so they are acutely aware of what they're doing to her academic reputation.
