In this video I teach the main picking pattern in the intro of Angeles. In part 2 I will teach how to play the whole intro accurately to the recorded version.
Watch my cover to see what it'll sound like when you learn it:

For anyone that needs help catching up to speed with the picking, what's working for me right now is starting at 80 BPM on a metronome and setting a timer for 5 minutes. Once I can do the pattern five times in a row, I move on. Ultimately, test it out and remember- have fun with it. I really enjoyed you labeling which finger goes where, that was super helpful.

@@NationalPK haha I was about to reply with the same question. Elliotts acoustic version of Baby Britain is a good gateway into learning his picking pattern. It helped me many years ago with learning some of his finger picking songs. Pretty Mary K (other version) I would say is one of the hardest to learn.

When you think of challenging guitar pieces, you think of Clapton, Hendrix Page, Froosh. They sound difficult but when you break them down they aren't. Elliot Smiths style of playing however....sounds like it might be easy to someone, but learning the fingerstyle properly the way he wrote it is beyond challenging! Like every Elliot Smith fan I think he's a genius, and never knew just how great he was. Your tutorial is the only one that breaks it down enough for me to learn properly. Even saying outloud the finger your using, makes it into a learnable pattern. My fingers hurt but this I'd awesome

Hy ethan thanks for this tutorial is amazing! Absolute the best on the web..one question: why use the point finger on the a string if you don't sound it ( in the second verse of 2th video you don't use it) it is necessary? Elliot did the same.. Thanks
@ethandaum
@ethandaum 9 жыл бұрын
Thanks Taka! Good question. The reason I taught that is because Elliott does play that note as part of the melodic/bass line once he starts strumming (I think you see that in part 3 of my lesson). So I figured you might as well get your hand used to that chord now, and not have to switch later. It also helps to have your finger on the A string in case you hit that string by accident, or sometimes an open string rings out by itself a little. I don't think it's necessary though until he specifically plays that note in the verses. Hope you're having fun learning it!

Ethan's guitar lessons and music can the guitar tuning interfere with the original sound of the song?
@hairlab9646
@hairlab9646 Жыл бұрын
Great job! Very close....Nobody should be a slave to recordings (Elliott sure wasn't and played many versions live) but Melodyne says he plays an A ("open" high E string) on the last 1/16th note of the first "pattern" and a B (D string 9h fret) and then an E (B string "open") to close out the A chord. Again, I don't want to be the TAB correction jerk, but I just decided to ID the notes because all of the TABS are so different from one another.
