The only person I've seen play it like the original recording. Elliott himself always struggled to play this live and often would simplify the chords. It's a tough song. One of the most beautiful songs ever. Amazing work! Subscribed

This song kicked my ass a few years back. I had to learn it by ear and learn all those finger picking pattern which are so hard lol Travis picking on steroids. I love Elliott Smith’s music, I miss him so much... thank you for the lesson, I learned a few things and I agree with everything you said about him, he was such a great musician, it’s a shame we lost him so soon :(

@@JustinGuitarSongs He is absolutely incredible. Have you ever tried to learn tomorrow tomorrow off of xo? It honestly feels like attempting to learn a classical guitar piece because it is extraordinarily intricate, and has some of the most complicated chord changes I’ve ever seen. Not to mention a beautiful melody on top of all that. I totally agree with you that he is right up there with all of the best songwriters, but he also holds in own as a guitar player. Cheers!

ive been teaching myself guitar for about 2 years. been on an elliott smith bender so I checked out this video solely out of curiosity, thinking i'd never be able to play such a complex and beautiful song. three days later I have it down. you are an excellent teacher and I am absolutely estatic to be able to play one of my favorite songs of all time. thank you :)

YES! Appreciate this so much, Justin. When I saw you transcribing Elliott songs earlier this week I went back and listened to albums by Elliott again, and I remembered why I fell in love with them and been listening nonstop all week. I learned this one a couple years ago but forgotten it, so I'll be coming back to this the next couple of days. I've always wanted to learn Everything Reminds Me of Her as well so I'm really looking forward to your lesson! :) (In the future a great intermediate song could be Somebody That I Used To Know! ). Thanks Justin. A beautiful song wonderfully played. Elliott was one of those rare artists who did very few duff songs in his career and had such a unique style. Anyone wanting to get into his stuff I would recommend his self-titled album to start with. Very low-fi and recorded on a 4 track I think - he's an artist who is very easy to become obsessed with if you give him a chance.

So ive been at this one the past few weeks and today it finally all came together. Im still working out the difficult voice over playing parts like where he does the chromatic voice leading that you talked about. Especially the part you struggled with, the "of real skill" line lol. I was already playing and trying to sing it but had never made it that far in the video so when you said that it made me feel validated that im not the only one who finds that part difficult. Ive also gone over ALL the available tabs and versions etc and i really find this one to be the most practical and seemingly accurate. I really appreciate you doing this one justice Justin. Ive attempted this song a few things but this tutorial was what really made me feel like i had something solid enough to work off of. Anyways thanks as always! Over the years ive learned many things from your lessons in my guitar journey and i really appreciate you sticking with the teaching all these years and offering free lessons along with your standard lessons so they can reach more people myself included.

It's been a long time since I tried to learn something new that wasn't basic, and the last time a song challenged me to the extent this one did was probably Leading Me Now by Tallest Man on Earth. I'm so happy I found your tutorial, a couple of other people's I found first I was like... mate that's not remotely how Elliott played it - but you put some serious work in to get it spot on, hats off. Your tutorial is an absolute benchmark in how to teach a song. I've still a way to go but 3 days in I'm getting close! It's a song I know so damn well that I can hear immediately when I've got a string wrong and you've done a wonderful job showing every detail. Thanks so much!

Should’ve checked out ‘Ethan’s Guitar Lessons and Music’ he did a tutorial of this song, I learn’t it off him about a year ago. Justin’s tutorial here is good but some of his chords were off, whereas the one Ethan did was spot on with how Elliott played it.

Not sure whether this was mentioned but Elliott sings the second line ("trailing some new kill" ) with the first word on the 1st beat of the next bar, which is different than what Justin is doing here. In any case, thank you Justin for the detailed tutorial, really appreciate it!

Thanks for this! One of my favorites ever. I found a bit of audio delay when viewing which made it a bit hard to follow such a complex song. If you had that issue I suggest using a different player and speeding up the audio (negative delay) about 600ms.

I've been waiting for your lesson on this song for so long that I actually had the time to learn it and play it my own way (thank to tabs and such). ^^ It's gonna be too difficult to un-learn it and re-learn it the right way, sooooooo now I'm hoping for your take on "Southern Belle" ! :)) My favorite Elliott's song I think. I was never able to reach the thumb/index speed needed and the notes right. Still can't. You'd be my savior ! Thanks for everything you've been doing for more than 10 years now ! Cheers :)

I stopped watching a while ago (I grew out of needing a video to learn songs) but I came back just to check up on you and I just have to say your voice is GORGEOUS now. It was always good but damn now it's pretty spectacular.
