One of the last TV appearances by the well-remembered singer/songwriter. Figure 8 was the fifth and final album by Elliott Smith of his solo career. He had previously recorded two collections with the indie band from Portland "Heatmiser".
Live performance of the first single of the LP at a nightime US talk-show.
This footage was kept and shared by our friend c0n@nL0v3r and was remastered by me.

The bass player in Elliott's band deserves some serious cred for all the vocal harmonies and the awesome bass playing. Playing those songs takes a very amazing musician to duplicate the album versions of the song.

Your comment made me have a thought. Usually bass players in rock/punk/indie are treated like NFL linemen. No one knows their names, no one ever really appreciates the roll that they play on the team/band, there’s no glory in the position, but without them the team/band would probably really really suck. Lol.

To think that I saw Elliott with this combo play live in Paris, almost a quarter of a century ago... Insane. The loss of Elliott Smith has been a scar in the history of popular music, and will never be redeemed. To say he was a musical genius is an understatement. Each individual song on "XO" and "Figure 8" has more brilliant ideas and profound lyrics than any whole LPs by any other artist ever since.

@@mariamvrck Why not? "Kindest soul ever to live" is some massive hyperbole to describe a guy we didn't know. He was just a man, albeit quite an exceptional one- he wasn't the Dalai Lama. He was probably a lot like you or me. A guy who loved to play music, who had family problems growing up, who made a living hanging, taping, and mudding drywall before he landed a record deal. A lot of my fellow Elliott Smith fans really like to simultaneously idealize him and think of him as this massively tortured soul. If I could bet on anything about Smith's personality being for certain, I would bet that he wouldn't like that his fans do that.
