Cockatoo finding out he is going to the vet

Max knows when he sees his carrier that it's a visit to the vet and gets pretty vocal about it.
Max is saying his own words that only he understands for the most part. The only things I know he is saying is "I don't wanna" and "What did I say"
He is actually a very happy and loving bird, but like any kid, he needs to express himself every now and then.

In animals, "swaying" behaviour, or repeated side-to-side movements, can often be a signal of great stress. If the bird is mimicking a human tantrum, then he has obviously witnessed angry behaviour, and it may be traumatic for him. He's reliving bad memories, so I don't find it "adorable" at all.

This video is several years old & Max doesn't swear anymore (although he does chuck a tantrum when it's vet day) which is testament to the stellar care, kindness & decency Dan has shown Max since.

He’s just repeating what he’s heard. Animals are like children. We need to listen to what is under their words and hear what’s expressed and connect with them. I know it’s funny when they act out but they need our empathy and calm loving reassurance and it builds trust with them. He’s a beautiful bird.

I like how he pauses after each tirade and listens to you - to see whether his arguments convinced you or not - I read somewhere that if you also use the carrier for things he likes, he learns to associate it w something positive, and is more cooperative about using it - at least that's what they say re cats lol

For reals. I've been listening to this guy for 3 years now and if there's a common refrain during his more pugnacious moods it's that he eats celery at 7°. One only hopes that's 7°C and not 7°F, although that beak could plow through a frozen celery no problem.

Cockatoos are a scream. Where I lived in Australia we had a gum tree at back on which hundreds of sulphur crests used to perch every evening to roost for the night. I rescued one in my horse paddock (it had a broken wing) and after taking six months of patient work managed to tame her down to a point where we became fast friends. She used to sit on my shoulder throughout the day, nibbling at my ears and eyebrows and chatting away. The are incredibly intelligent, full of fun, and bond very strongly to their owners.
