In this video lesson, I'm sharing the secrets to successfully painting water in watercolour. Focusing on the value patterns in the reference photo can help keep you from getting lost in the shapes and colours and simplifies the task.
Supplies & reference photo linked below.
This is actually the key to painting ANY subject in watercolour. By focusing on the light and dark values and their shapes, you can simplify every subject in order to paint it accurately. When this falls apart, it's usually because our mind is reluctant to let go of our preconceptions on what the object "should" look like, and see it for what is actually represented in our reference photo.

Water has been a big part of my painting times...this lesson was so very helpful and interesting to learn from the aspect of using values and shapes to see and depict the flow and rhythm in any water scene. Thank you Angela!

You’ve transformed a complex image into a beautifully simple and expressive painting AND you’ve made it look so achievable (even for me!) Thank you Angela. I find I don’t have the patience for tight, detailed painting; but you’re giving me strategies and skills that allow me to paint my way. I have loved watercolour and ink all my life and now, thanks to you, I can confidently get creative and play like I did as a child. Thank you so much 🙏

Fantastic! Very informative. Especially the tip about adding a little bit of a slightly different color every time you replenish your brush. This is a great synchronicity for me right now because we are at Mt. Rainier and I'm just about to paint a waterfall that I photographed yesterday. Thank you.

I like how you kept going around your painting. If I spend too much time in one spot I find that I can overwork that area and it can make the overall painting look off. Thank you for sharing your talent with us, Angela.

Thanks for delving into painting water...I love the ocean and have numerous pictures of the seashore and waves from every angle but have never been successful in making them look real!....your approach to painting this picture was fascinating to watch. I agree with Shelley that it would be wonderful to have a mini or full course on how to paint a variety of water scenes. Large waves crashing on the shore or gentle ones rolling in or splashing over rocks. I also struggle with getting that lovely silvery blue reflection on the sand after a wave has receded. Also wanted to congratulate you on your new connection with Daniel Smith..you certainly deserve the recognition. I so look forward to these Friday paint nights...thanks so much for all that you do.

Hi Angela, love the colours. I’ve learned so much watching your videos. I now put most of my paintings on the wood panels and I’m just about to try the black ground with guache to put a a few small ones on our newly decorated bathroom. I also have bought quite a few Daniel Smith paints which I hadn’t heard of as here in the UK it’s mainly W & N. Thanks again and have a lovely Christmas.
