Our family is a wonderful mix of English, Scottish and South African. Every year we’d traditionally attended the Highland Gathering together and enjoyed watching the various bands and then the mass pipe band as a Grand Finale. Dad passed away 3 years after I immigrated to Australia. My brother was killed in a tragic accident in South Africa in 2016. The family arranged a lone piper to play Amazing Grace at his funeral. I then lost my mum on New Years Day 2022. I find myself wanting to watch and listen to more and more pipe music but when I do, my heart absolutely breaks into a million pieces. The memories are still so raw yet it’s all so bitter sweet.

Perhaps the most evocative lyrics of this beautiful song for me are..."Sweep through the heather like deer in the glen Carry me back to the days I knew then Nights when we sang like a heavenly choir..." They take me back to times as a youth when I joined with friends singing around campfires or beach bonfires- our voices mingling with sparks and embers and all floated to heaven. Oh to go back in time!

Some of the pipe band members also started work in 1977, straight out of Campbeltown Grammar school and into Campbeltown Shipyard at 15 or 16 years old (as did I). While they were making the record I remember asking some of them how it was even possible for a Wings song to have bagpipes on it. They could only describe it as strange but it seemed to work. These young lads got to appear on Top of the Pops, the Mike Yarwood show and some other TV programmes I think. It was an exiting time in Campbeltown. I think nearly everyone went down to the local Woolworths and bought a copy when it came out. I still have mine. I know that some of these lads are still involved in the pipe band now, 45 years later.

He and I used to sing it together when I was a little girl - at his funeral, I accompanied the cd and, as the bagpipes started to play the first bridge, they started to take the coffin from the church.
