Imo the umpires strike zone was inconsistent. Sometimes it’s a strike n same location, it’s a ball. As Shohei walked back to the dugout u can see his lips say,”bs”. Angels had their chances. When the bases are empty, batter gets a hit. Base runners in scoring position n strikeout. Then two outs, the batter his the third out deep. Can someone who knows the batting coach ask why batters continue to swing at balls that higher than their shoulders? NOw that ward is out, who will replace his bat? Only Renfrow n Ohtani are left from the starters at the beginning of the season. I believe the replacement players just gotta do their jobs. Bunt when there’s a runner in second with no outs. Don’t send the runner from third with less than two outs on the contact play. Seems like 90% chance runner is thrown out at home.

I would say that over the two games, the Jays have benefited more from the missed calls. I'm a Jays fan, so it's nice to see us actually being the beneficiary here (Bucknor was unsurprisingly atrocious the other day), but some of these umps really need to get better with their playcalling. If they don't, I for one will welcome our new roboump overlords.

Before anything, a huge prayer for Taylor Ward and hope it looked worse than it is. Hoping for a real quick recovery. With that, Manoah needs to be a serious talking point. He's been overall better, but I'd give him a 6/10 on confidence, and that's not going to work on an insanely tight playoff run. His last two wins were against the Angels and the Mariners, and those weren't even big confidence boosters. Still lots of walks, little bite on the slider, and today, that really scary lack of control to Ward. It's irresponsible to the Jays and now to the safety of the opposing players to keep rolling him out like this. He's always been a high plunker pitcher to begin with, but a guy like that who's missing command this year is a problem. On the positive side, the bullpen again came in and was fantastic right when needed. Three times the bases loaded tonight, stranded all of them minus the run that came in on the Ward HBP. Chad Green continues to have a dominant performance down in the minors, making his way quickly back up. The bats are starting to wake up too. Still needs a good bolstering since some get hot while others go cold on this lineup, but they've been doing better. Bo found his way out of the funk and I know Springer can too. A veteran power RISP batter is still needed. Also, unbiased opinion, these umps are killing the Angels while they're already kicking themselves. Some god awful calls. Get this fixed MLB.
@gst013
@gst013 10 ай бұрын
Chill with the melodrama. It's not "irresponsible to the Jays and now to the safety of the opposing players" at all. They need him to be be a part of any playoff run they'll have, and the minors have done their part already. There have been guys with far, far worse control issues than Manoah is having right now. Obviously unfortunate that Ward took one in the head, but accidents happen.
@poorsonwelles
@poorsonwelles 10 ай бұрын
@@gst013 yeah I agree. I feel awful for Ward and I really hope the guy is okay, at the same time I think it was a really unfortunate pitch in that he seemed to not read it at all coming off of Manoah's hand. Like those pitches happen all the time, wild fastballs up and in, and 99.9% of the time the guy just ducks out of the way because he sees that it's coming near him and it's pure reflex at that point. So again it's not his fault for getting hit, I think just really unfortunate that he happened to not be able to get a read on this pitch and just sort of froze at the worst possible moment.
@HiroiSekai
@HiroiSekai 10 ай бұрын
@@poorsonwelles Wanna mention overall I do agree with this. It's not like it was intentional, it was unfortunate, it does happen. However, I just think they're playing with too much fire on Manoah lately. Brought back up really prematurely, still shows clear signs of lack of command in pockets, and he's already a pitcher that plunks batters at a higher rate than most when fully in control. It doesn't have to be the face, a hit on the hand sent Trout to surgery and an extended IL, a stubbed toe sent Judge down for over a month. I always worry about someone hurling 90+ MPH bullets of cork and rubber without at least 80% confidence in where his pitches are generally ending up. Right now I'm at 60% for Manoah at best.

Even as a Blue Jays fan, I agree it’s ridiculous. I think if you want to walk a batter, give them pitches outside of the strike zone, so you can’t just walk sluggers. It makes the game less fun!

That's exactly what they used to do--until a few years ago, pitchers had to actually throw four pitches well outside the strike zone in order to walk a runner. There were a few unexpected highlights from it, but mostly it was just a waste of time.

The only thing Manoah showed from his earlier form is his ability to wriggle out of jams. I remember last year when he would get 2-3 guys on base and not break a sweat. This year has been different as he was afraid to throw strikes. Or he couldn't throw strikes!!
@kevwwong
@kevwwong 10 ай бұрын
Yeah he got nervous in the 5th for whatever reason. Buck and Dan astutely noted that he was trying to place pitches instead of pitching like he did in the first 4 innings. But considering how out of sorts he was at the beginning of the year, this is much better. Fortunately for us, Genesis has that invisible touch and got us out of the bases-loaded jam.

Hope Ward is not too badly hurt! Manoah is known to have control issues, this obviously wasn't intentional. Ohtani has thrown a dozen wild pitches and had many HBP this season as well. It could've happened to anyone, baseball is a dangerous sport. You get guys throwing 100 miles / 160km in one direction and guys hitting the balls at even higher speeds up to 120/190km/h. All we can hope for is luck that people who get hit are not seriously injured.

@@BlandBanditNot really. He's a far better hitter than he is a pitcher this season. The Angels have a six-man rotation to accommodate him. He strikes out a lot guys, but he has control issues. He leads the league in the hit batsmen and wild pitches and is top 10 in walks. He's never pitched more than 166 innings. That's not enough for a #1 starter. Around 200 innings is what you need from an ace. If the Angels were able to acquire a top of the rotation starter and keep Trout healthy, they'd improve their chances greatly.
