FMA 101 - EP 21: Some FMA systems practice their own 12 angles of attack. The order of the angles varies from style to style, but the basic lines of attack are mostly the same. The attacks are combination of slashing/swinging attacks and thrusting attacks. Each 12 angles is unique to each FMA system and is a stylistic art that separates it from the other systems.

Nice...every style will create their own 12 for artistic purposes and style identity.

It sure is, in the end, the practitioner should be able to read the attack and counter on the fly without thinking about what attack number is coming at them.

I never could comprehend the value of trying to memorize a bunch of systems different sets of angles. It strikes me as impractical. Working with Serrada guys, Balintawak guys, Bahala-Na guys, Pekiti guys, Latosa guys, DeCuerdas guys, Bakbakan guys, Inosanto-LaCosta guys ...it just gets too confusing. On the other hand, in practice we use exactly the same basic five that you show at the end. 1. Forehand downward, 2. Backhand downward, 3. Forehand horizontal, 4. Backhand horizontal, 5. the thrusts (same 3, in the same order). Now that I can keep straight!

From our understanding, with all of the interviews we've done with the old school Guro and GM's, they said that FMA has evolved where they try to make it too complicated. Some of the new generations said that the art has become more intricate to cater to the western crowd. In the end, the person should be able to read any attack and adapt/counter on the fly without thinking of the number of attack.

Not a problem, continue to expand your knowledge past the style you already study. Always good to keep an open mind.

In the end it seems like it’s all slashing/swinging and thrusting attacks.

That's what I see here. But there is more (hey he's giving us a short video, right?) I personally train a very simple system. It has three main striking types. A snap (some call a witik), a punch, and a slash (some call a labtik). Then there are the stabs (some call them estocadas). Use with angles, build your combinations and you have a good set of tools.

in our kenpo instruction no,12 was straight down over the top of the head like an axe chop, was this correct?

Hi Kent, it depends what system you're training in. Many systems will have a different way of delivering and angle 12 (some systems don't go by the numbering systems). Depending on the style we've seen "angle 12's" as a punch, overhand strike/strike, or a thrust. In our opinion, there's no right or wrong when it comes to the numbering, it's just a stylistic interpretation of a universal move.
