The ITV Network: Part 13 - Anglia (Anglia Television)
Our journey through the ITV Network continues here on the Ident Review Extra! This time around, we're travelling to the East of England, to take a look at a franchise that launched in the late 1950's, but managed to create a visual identity that lasted for nearly 40 years! Taking a look at that success and idents beyond, we're paying a visit, to Anglia Television!
The Ident Review Extra began in the April of 2020 and covered all of the idents seen on BBC2 during the 1990's and early 2000's. After a Christmas run in December, the series has had a long rest. But now it's back, taking a trip through all the different regions of the ITV Network!

The triangles are a childhood staple, the Knight I didn't see until the modern day. Both are distinctive in their own way.

The Anglia Knight was a classic, the 'A' logo was designed by Martin Lambie Nairn, the man who designed the BBC Two idents and the Channel 4 logo among many others, and he sadly passed away at the end of last year.

Yeah, not the knight though, just the 'A' logo that came after it. I think he was inspired by the knight.

Only found this channel this week, but all the Ident stuff is right up my street, will slowly watch the back catalogue, Christmas 2021 Idents hopefully next week begin to air on TV keep up the good work

The flag logo from the 80s & 90s is so nostalgic to me, I grew up in this era and remember seeing this a lot. Thanks for the video and making me all nostalgic.

Here we are, my region. Unfortunately by the time I was born ITV had dropped all regional variants, but I do really like this one. It's a weird fascination.

I don’t know what I like more. The waving flag with some sorta tranquil music, or the simple knight on a horse with bombastic music.

4:22 You did the math wrong. 39 years is 1998. The original ident lasted 29 years 1959-1988

The actual portion of George Frederic Handel's Water Music played in the ITV1 Anglia 1959 ident is Suite No. 2 in D Alla Hornpipes

Good video I’ll tell you what Anglia is one of my favourites because in 1979 when Tales Of The Unexpected was released in March of that year in my opinion it’s a great Anglia TV Production for ITV by Roald Dahl

Anglia didn't actually use the 1989 generic ident. I think there's two reasons. One, was that their existing ident was only a year old, and the other reason is that the blue and yellow triangles are the wrong way around!

I really like the stylised A ident 👍🏻 The colours are great! But the Knight on horseback, as you say, is very memorable and works for an ident I feel!

Anglia was never networked that much (at least in South Wales). Sit has an inevitable follow up."And now from Norwich, it's the quiz of the week ..." The triangles logo reminds me of the old railfreight logo

Two questions, firstly, who is/ was the knight and how could they sack him off, that is such a striking motif

1, The knight was a trophy commissioned by William III of the Netherlands in 1850 for the Falcon Club, which was a society that met once a year to compete in horse races, falconry and other sports. It was modelled off a statue of Richard I, but was intended to represent "The Black Knight." And second, by the 80s, the logo had basically been sticking out like a sore thumb, due to everyone else using CGI and the whole "flying through space" gimmick, so they got Martin-Lambie-Nairn himself to make a new ident for them, to which he charged Anglia £500,000. And that's 1988 money. Does that answer your questions?

Ah here we go, my home terf. I remover having films my parents had recorded off the Telly in the late 80s with the knight and I really remember the triangles in the flag one from my own childhood. 🙂

I got to see some of Anglia stuff because i had grandparents that lived in Norfolk, and their local current affairs programme was called Look East, from what i remember.

Look East was the BBC regional news programme. It was About Anglua on the other side. It had a great bombastic jazzy theme tune in the late 1970s/early 1980s, written by the same person who wrote the classic late 70s/early 80s theme tune to Sale Of The Century ( Icalled Joyful Pete by Peter Fenn).

The yellow triangles on the Anglia flag pointed Eastward - maybe a reference to Anglia covering the East of England.

Iirc Lord David Dundas wrote the sting for the 1988 Anglia ident. I grew up in the Anglia region during its colour heyday from the early 1970s to late 1990s. We got an "Anglia Presents" caption board rather than the film ident that the rest of the country got before Anglua produced programmes like Survival, Tales Of The Unexpected, Sale Of The Century, Bygones, etc. I also remember the in vision continuity announcements. Very different from the BBC 1 mirror globe; just an announcer at a desk with a curtain behind, no station logo or anything. That ceased when the flag ident came in with the exception of night time Anglia with the likes of Paul Lavers, who incidentally I last saw on TV in a Haribo advert a few years back. I'm glad Anglia didn't adopt the 1989 generic ITV ident! Shame it was the beginning of the end with the hearts ident.

I always wanted to know about the model used for Anglia. How big was it ? What happened to it? Does someone have it now ? But I got info from the video so great stuff :-)

It's a fair size, it resides in a glass case at Anglia Television reception in Norwich. It sits on a turntable in the glass case.

Slight arithmetical error. 1959 to 1988 is only 29 years, not "nearly 40". Interesting though, and yes, it's a long time to use the same ident.

I don’t know if it is true or not not but I remember hearing that the knight was owned before the channel went on air by one of the directors of the company, who suggested using it as an ident. It was modded to hold an Anglia flag and filmed.

I read that two of the directors of the company were in Bond Street (Old or New, I can't remember) in London, saw it for sale in a shop and thought it would make a good company logo. I believe it's now in a museum in the Anglia region.

The Anglia Knight was originally a falconry trophy bought by the then chairman of Anglia from the jewellers Asprey in Bond Street, London. Aspley added the Anglia pennon to the lance, and the rest is history as they say. The Anglia Knight was displayed in Norwich Library a few years back as well at Bridewell museum in Norwich, but I believe it has now been returned to Anglia House. I think Anglia House is the only surviving original ITV regional HQ, and includes the 1959 era Anglia Television signage - look on Google Earth.
