For some reason i think still the killer is Josh, as "revenge" for the death of his sisters. The scene where josh dies we don't see (psycho) and he could have staged his own death.

I'm kinda sad that I googled what happens if you dont lose Matt's fingers. It literally doesn't matter for the story all that happens is if you pry the trap you lose the machete and the trap is optional. So... literally all that happened was a cosmetic change.
