As a Canadian cruiser, I would be shocked if all the Americans stopped to stand for the Canadian Anthem if it were playing on television during a Canadian hockey game - so why do some Americans think everyone (American or not) stop for their anthem?

I'm a retired nurse. I can't tell you the amount of SSB super bowl renditions I heard while doing a dressing change or bathing someone. Did I stop in the middle of whatever and throw my hand across my chest? I did not. Does that mean I don't love my country? It does not. People are more important to me than a song. If that's disrespectful then so be it. I'd like to know how many Americans would stop and pay respect if, say, the Italian or German National song was playing? Respect goes both ways and our country is not the only country in the world, good grief.

The cruise line crew do not have to stop work for the national USA anthem.

No, the crew should not (have to) stop what they're doing for the Star Spangled Banner, the Marseillaise, God Save the Queen/King, the Wilhelmus, das Deutschlandlied or any other National anthem. I'm sure if they did some people would complain about that as well.

I would imagine that IF the crew were doing their jobs (which they apparently were), they wouldn't even realize what was happening on the Super Bowl.....if they even knew what the Super Bowl was!!!!!!

Not only are most of the staff nor American, literally none of Carnival Corp's (or RC, NCL, etc) registered in America. That's an insane complaint.

I've been in bars and restaurants in THE U.S.A watching sporting events and where neither the customers nor the staff stopped what they were doing for the anthem. Not surprising to me the staff on a cruise ship didn't stop working for it.

The solution is to not wait until the last minute and to tell cruisers why and what happened.

I’m Canadian and watch a lot of sports on tv. If the broadcaster carries the anthem (because some will skip it/them to show commercials), that is my cue to get up and fix myself a bevy… I don’t stand and remove my hat… take a chill pill dude who complained to JH

About the itinerary change, you are right that every cruise contract allows for itinerary change without notice...BUT...that may NOT be the case when the destination is in the name of the cruise purchased. That is why Norwegian changed the name of the cruise. You see, if you purchase a cruise called the Antarctic cruise and it does not go to the Antarctic, that is not substantially performing the spirit of the contract. As the drafter of the contract, Norwegian would have to show how an Antarctic cruise that stays in South America is giving the passengers what they contracted to receive. This is why most cruise lines do not say the exact destination in the name of the cruise. By putting the destination in the name, a passenger could argue that visiting that destination is part of the contract, absent extreme circumstances.

Im in the USA. My customers would be quite aggravated if I stopped working during the national anthem.

Norwegian, there’s a difference between a last minute schedule change versus a change before the start of a cruise. Yes, the cruisers should have been notified!

What if the cruise line sells an itinerary knowing all along that they wouldn't be going to the "bucket list" port they advertised?

Antarctica is a bucket list item for anyone who chose that itinerary. I'd be pissed too if I spent all that money and the headache of planning the time off work and all the preparations to go on that cruise. There should be some sort of refund for upsetting passengers.

Agree that service should continue during the super bowl playing of the US national Anthem. 1) The cruise ship is with a few exceptions NOT US soil. As such the rules of that country applies. 2) They would need to stop if ANY national anthems are played from any of the countries globally as this would be equal discrimination for citizens from that country. 3) This was NOT a ships organised activity but a service to the guest to allow them to see a big event in the US. 4) The crew except for a few people are not US citizens and as such this is not their national anthem.

I would be upset in the itinerary change, but it is in the contract. Sad that the lady passed away on the world cruise. I would like to think of it that she died doing what she loved.

Tony the cruise hands were great today. As a former Marine the National Anthem holds a special place for me and the friends I have lost. BUT.... if I was on an Europen cruise and the Spanish, Italian, or Greek National Anthem was played would I recognize it, would I stand? No, crew are busy as it is and expecting them to stop and stand for it is Luda crist.😂 I'd be willing to bet 3/4 of the Americans remained seated, drinking, and left their hats on.

Since most employees on cruise ships are from other countries, it makes the anthem complaint more crazy. We didn't stand up at home. We sat down respectfully and got goosebumps while listening to Reba. It's so wonderful to see her again. Doesn't make us (un)American. Overzealous Americans need to stop embarrassing the rest of us.

I would join that mutiny if I got on a ship and learned that "Antarctic" had been quietly scrubbed from the itinerary with no reason or compensation. That fact that the website was altered implies that the directive came down from on high.

Just because a contract (you wrote without input from the other parties) says you don't have to do something does NOT mean that you shouldn't. You definitely SHOULD, and you owe these people at least a partial refund. What a HUGE disappointment this would be for a trip on their bucket list, particularly if they may never be able to try to afford it again.

I’m guessing it depends on what law they work to, but by changing the name of the cruise, is that misrepresentation, ie ‘Not as advertised’. I understand changing itinerary, that’s all locked down in the small print, but if you buy an orange you expect to get an orange, if they change the name to Apple that’s a totally different product.

Personally I blame NCL for ruining the very expensive bucket list cruise. I would be very pissed off too!! I truly believe they knew before they left they weren’t going on the itinerary they sold. And their excuse is so lame it’s ridiculous. I certainly wouldn’t step foot on them again!!

Irrespective of the contract of carriage language, one exposure for NCL in this itinerary debacle is deceptive trade practices at both federal level (FTC Act) and in some states.

Good reason to protest. If you went to McDonald’s in order a big Mac, and they gave you a fish sandwich. You would have something to say, like, give me my money back, or a big Mac. NCL needs to make this one right, or they are no better than a sleazy bait, and switch car salesman.

I think you really short changed the important facts on Norwegian's shady cancellation on that cruise going to Antarctica. If you had elaborated more that it had nothing to do with the weather and no claims it was mechanical, folks could offer a more informed opinion. ☺️

We had an Egypt and Jerusalem cruise get the entire itinerary changed to Turkey and Greek Isles. Minimal notification (happened to see changes on the website, not in email) and initially they said we could not cancel and get our money back even though literally every port was different. Luckily it was 9 months prior and we were able to "talk to a manager" and got our deposit back but there should be some type of penalty for cruises that do not notify people of such drastic changes, especially without notification prior to boarding. It's just bad business selling a cruise to Antarctica that doesn't go to Antarctica

I agree Tony, Freedom means not having to stand and put you hand over your heart. And I would never force an American to do that, much less someone that is from another country. If I am at a sporting event and they play our anthem, and theirs I stand for both, and salute for ours, but if the person next to me does not that's their choice. As far as stopping the broadcasting of the super bowl during a medical emergency 1) I think they had more important things to be concerned about and 2) 99% of the people on board most likely don't even know this person.

Just heard the complaint about the cruise ship crew that was doing their job while the US national anthem was being played for the Super Bowl. Curious if that would suggest the vendors at Allegiant Stadium stopped serving customers at the Super Bowl while the anthem was being performed. Does anyone know? 😮

Maybe I'm wrong, but I doubt those who are complaining stand up in the comfort of their living room every time they hear the SSB.

My last cruise was in Oct 2022 on the Horizon and it's driving me crazy, so I feel ya on that cruise fever, Tony. Only a year and two months until my next cruise!

OK, so I just watched the travel Scouts, KZfaq video on the Norwegian cruise itinerary, being changed, and the video clip he had of the woman was much longer, and had much more detail. And apparently there were quite a few people who did not get the memo. And they were extremely shady in the way they did the change of itinerary. They absolutely owe these passengers at least half of their money back. This was a up to $14,000 cruise not including the other stuff that you pay for outside of the cruise line cabin itself. I would have been rate furious, livid, and any other adjective that you can come up with to go with angry

Nurse here. I remember being on a code when the Superbowl was on. The doc running the code had us turn on the tv so he could watch the superbowl during the code.

When I was stationed overseas, I use to watch the Super Bowl at the Enlisted Club. The bartenders were some times AD military. When the anthem played, club patrons stood up, but the bartenders…kept working! Washing glasses, stocking beer and alcohol bottles, and clearing empty glasses from the bar. Was it disrespectful…hell no! They got a job to do.

Returned on Sunday on Regal Princess, last Wednesday had a "Man over board" no guest, was from a small vessel got too close and overturned. No injuries, exciting time at 5:15 am

I know it's in the fine print, but it's a no brainer to be open, upfront & fair with your paying guests. I've always wanted to try NCL ( actually did the Pride of America 3 times pre covid) But I hear such negative news from their line now. The lines I cruise on have always been upfront about itinerary changes. If I had Antarctica quietly removed, I'd be pissed too. And to refuse to talk, or give an explanation & even call security is a slap. I guess if they are selling out their ships, Customer service slides. What a shame!!

Not a bucket list but we had a trip to the Caribbean from NJ. When we arrived at the port and got inside we were being handed papers that had a totally different itinerary. Yes this was at the end of COVID and itineraries were volatile but a whole itinerary changed? Later as I talked to others I discover that the itinerary I booked was an alternate itinerary and what had just changed was the original itinerary😇

Just because someone complains, it doesn't mean anything is wrong. I have seen and heard so many complaints about absolutely nothing. Some people just get there life energy from being negative.

There is a reduced speed regulation in place by the IAATO (International Association of Antártica Tour Operators) to help protect the migrating whales. Any day on a cruise is better than a day at work! 😊

I watched the last world cup while on a cruise ship, I don't remember all of the Americans stopping what they were doing every time the national anthem of all the other countries was played. I also don't remember anyone other than Americans stopping and standing for the US national anthem. I wouldn't expect them to. Some people just love to complain.

How convenient that the CONTRACT says the cruise company does NOT have to tell passengers that their cruise is changed while on the cruise. That's a little too convenient in my opinion. A company has an obligation to fulfill it's contract to its customers & it seems we are getting the short end of that stick now every time. YES, NCL should acknowledge these upset customers & do something about changing the name of the cruise while the cruise is in progress. Simply tacky & uncalled-for.

No, they had no reason to complain about continuing the Super Bowl. It’s an entire ship full of people and it didn’t interfere with the evacuation of a sick passenger. No, the crew shouldn’t have stopped working for the national anthem. I wouldn’t stop what I’m doing for other countries when I hear theirs because I’m an American.
