It IS about the water, insofar as the water is their home and she would (likely) attack anything that threatened her home. That being said, you are absolutely correct about the safety of the youngsters, and that is more important than "the water". She might not have done anything if there was no young there, given the fact that there are several lions on the bank.

Probably the biggest threat to the calves is lurking right under that water: a male hippo that hasn't sired them. In fact, I'm baffled by how the moms manage to keep their calves out of the bulls' way on a regular basis.

Lol there's a video online a pack of lions tried that in night and got manhandled by a single hippo, and also lost 2 members These lions are just guys who act tough in reality they are the little bit*hes of jungle when compared to elephants, hippos and rhinos even the female ones can rip them apart

I think that lioness crossing to other side was a tactic.If the hippo kept moving forward, the game will change. Hippo realized it immediately and retreated.

Hippos and Lions are very much alike when it comes to territorialism . They protect their territory to death. A hippo will never attack you if you meet outside it’s territory
