Back in the day we used to rip apart Gibson 490 pickups and stick short A5 mags in them. That was the budget "T Top" replica.

Lower output pickups along with a boost are a classic combination for much original heavy rock from the '60s and '70s. I think lots of people struggle with a lack of definition trying to use high output pickups and basically making sonic mush. Great sounding pickup and the skilled playing doesn't hurt either, your videos deserve far more views than you get!!!

Sounds amazing. A "hotter pickup" is probably just an easy sales pitch. I can't comment on 50s gear but on a modern amp raising the impedance is just going to drive the input circuitry harder and steal head room from the pre amp. And that's why Angus sounds so good. He controls the level of distortion by how he hits the strings, not by turning up the gain so it's always distorting.

Fantastic sounding pickup, Tony. And you've nailed the early AC/DC Angus sound. I'm figuring it's around 7.5k. Like you, I'm astounded that more folks don't want low output humbuckers. Probably the best-sounding pickup I've played is an Ibanez/Maxon Super 70, which was about 7.6k.

T-tops retain great clarity in any circumstance.. and you are right.. even for high gain.. they certainly are better than Gibson's current offerings for sure.. i put some T-top replicas into my old 76 SG and it came to life.. adding the Solodallas storm pedal in front of a cleanish Marshall does wonders to replicate that wireless boost he was using.. the tone is amazing. I actually DNT prefer his new Duncan models which to my ears have a bit too much low end in them..

In my experience we're almost always better off when we can use the amp for gain and drive and power and just go for tone from the pickups. The only reason we ever did otherwise was back in the day when all amps were low gain and we were trying to drive some sustain at non-insane volume.

Angus has dabbled in quite a few hotter pickups, mostly lieve and mostly in the 80's, but he's said many times he lives in that PAF/T-Top region of the humbucker spectrum.

I do a Jimmy Page 1973 Madison Square Garden set on my Channel . A regular modern A5 Magnet for the bridge isn't any good really. Too Bloated on the Bass, and Ice pick in the treble.. I use old Short A5 magnet in the bridge..The Neck pickup took forever to get bang on.

Definitely has that distinctive almost strat like "ping" that angus get from his SG. But still sounds a tiny bit too hot like its breaking up too much for a low volume amp, I wonder if the bridge humbucker was lowered slightly and you let an amp at higher volume do the dirty work would it be more like that almost clean angus tone. I read somewhere before that angus and malcolm used to record in the studio at very high amp volume.

I thought the wireless was the tone secret, a secret that was solved with the SoloDallas Storm shaffer replica? I need custom pickups as well? Edit, I guess I should have watched the entire video before opening my mouth, thanks for the info! Edit 2, yep sounds spot on to me, if I went to a concert with a acdc tribute band and this was the tone of the guitar, I would be happy.

You know, I totally get the initial cynicism about custom pickups - and it's entirely correct to be a bit sceptical. I mean, there's so many off the shelf pickups out there, surely there's something out there that already does the job. The problem with pickups is not the quality of what's out there from Seymour or Dimarzio etc, it is that the process of finding the right one is difficult. You're relying on someone to accurately describe what is likely to be the result of putting the pickup in your guitar, through your rig. That's why I started doing what I do - not to have a whole range of off the shelf pickups but to wind specific custom jobs for specific customers. Sometimes I make those available because I think they will fulfil a good role for a lot of players, but most of them remain custom winds, never to be fully repeated. Often, the process of getting the custom pickup right requires more than one wind - and I rewind for the customer to taste or alter the magnet strength using my first design as a starting point.

@@TonyEdwardsGuitars I am trying to decide what to put in my 338. The stock pups are microphonic as hell. I was thinking a pair of nashville retrotrons from guitar fetish. What do you think about mixing pups, like a retrotron in the bridge and something different in the neck?

Using Helix - Bright Channel on a plexi, Tones all on 3, presence on 2, slight mid boost from an EQ in front of the amp sim, 25w Greenback Cab with 2 57s, one centre one cone. Top and tail EQ on the outboard at 80Hz/7kHz, which is the standard way to deal with Helix natural tendency to fuzziness.

Not that I would buy them since they are overpriced and I'd rather support independent builders but I wonder how Gibson's new t type t top clones compare to the originals?
@TonyEdwardsGuitars
@TonyEdwardsGuitars 10 ай бұрын
Honestly, I had no idea that they'd reissued the T Tops. If the burstbuckers are anything to go by, probably pretty good. My issue with BBs is that I prefer a wider differential between the bridge and neck in a Gibson style guitar. I used to use Bare Knuckles in all my builds until about 10 years ago - the Mules being my go to set. But I never could quite get the balance how I wanted. I can't claim my pickups are better than anyone else's, but they do have the balance that I prefer in terms of tones/strengths. These kinda odd reissues come about because I wound one for a customer on request, found l liked the result and added the recipe to the list of things I could offer.

Did you know that Angus Young has used Seymour Duncan Antiquity Humbuckers wound very low output? 7.7K 7.8-7.9K for decades? Look on the Angus Young “Rig Rundown”. The tech states precisely what Pickupd are in the Back in Black SG and they’re Antiquity Humbuckers fed into a Schaffer Tower wireless and into Amps. 🎉

A T Top has around 7.6k+/- The DCR tells us NOTHING about output. A 7k vs 13k pickup...Which is louder? Which has more treble?.. Neither can be answered..Why do manufacturers disclose the DCR?...Its simply because guitarists ask for it..Its a complete nonsensical circle of ignorance at the end of the day.

T-Top = Standardized PAF. End Of.
@TonyEdwardsGuitars
@TonyEdwardsGuitars Ай бұрын
That's not quite true, - and it's to do with the start wire position of the T-Top being different to the PAF/Patent Sticker pickup. But that was Gibson's aim. However, the process of doing so did alter the pickup quite significantly, even in as much as Jimmy Page removed a PAF and put back a T Top to tighten up his LP and reduce feedback issues.
