A collection of rude villager comments in the original Animal Crossing for Nintendo GameCube. Watch as they call me an idiot, a psycho, an insufferable wimp, the most boring person alive, an immature baby, a bum, a liar, and much more! And yes, this is all real dialogue that's in the game! They don't make them like this any more!

I'm glad they took out these OFFENSIVE lines. I literally can't play the GC version without needing to take a break in my safe space. People who are mean and say offensive things should be banned from life and deserve capital punishment. So glad they removed all this HATESPEACH.

For a couple of bells only, you can update the Back Hand to work on those small critters! Now they can experience what came looking for them! Buy At your Local Re-tail!

I mean the rudeness was a little over the top in the GC Animal Crossing but they could have at least kept SOME of it. It doesn’t feel right when a snooty villager compliments my outfit. They should tell me I look like shit.

Well. I think in gcn ac the personalities sucked because EVERYONE treated you like shit. I understand that newcomers aren't seen well,but not everyone is like that. Some people are nice with strangers. But at the same time not all people are nice, and that's the error of nl and nh. I think that in ww the personalities were right, cranky villagers treated you like shit (because that's their role), normal villagers were nice etc..

I always found it funny that people took more issue with Resetti in this game as if he was the only rude one. Cuz like tbh...almost all the characters in this game were insanely rude to you for no reason sometimes. At least with Resetti he was mad at you for playing God with your save files, so that was a decent reason for him to be so mad.

Some video game players think that if they're anything below a God, there's automatically something wrong with the game.

I like to think that the reason all of the villagers got nicer in the newer games is because of your increase in status. Before, they could shit-talk you as much as you want because you were equals, but then you became the mayor and then the creator of the entire damn island. My theory is that Isabelle has the power of mass hypnosis and that when she first arrived in town in New Leaf she brainwashed the villagers into being super happy and polite like herself. The only drawbacks to her ability is that it doesn't work well on cranky villagers and it doesn't affect any of the other NPCs at all.

So, my boyfriend has only played New Horizons, and I've tried to explain to him how mean the villagers were in WW and CF (especially WW) but he did not fully grasp it until I showed him this video. He thought they were just slightly kid-friendly rude or sometimes got offended, but did not believe me when I said they would literally threaten to spit on you and call you fat. This made me dig out my old DS to replay it with him!! Thanks for this video, I forgot how much I loved the old games!

yeah i recently found out i likely have this thing called rsd (rejection sensitive dysphoria) (really common in people with ADHD) - it's just hypersensitivity basically but with a lot of added self-inflicted trauma LOL, and this game TOTALLY would've hurt me so bad if i played it as a kid! watching these now, ofc it makes me laugh but OMG...if i was attached to villagers as a kid (and i got attached easily, again, ADHD...) then i would've been SOBBING if they called me a stupid fat idiot or whatever LMFAOOOO - i totally get why nintendo toned it the fuck down up into new horizons!

Wanna know something interesting? Apparently this game didnt even get translated from japanese when it came to America. The English team just did it their own way and thats why they're so rude lol. That and you could get away with it, the rude dialogue back then. Its not as bad as it is now though its still there to an extent in the newer games.

Apparently this was only in the English localization. The localization team thought the script needed to be spicier for some reason. Likely for the usual reason of attracting sales. In the Japanese version, however, they’re much more polite. So really, the real reason villagers became nicer is because translations became more accurate.

Fun fact: When they brought the game to America from Japan the American (English team that worked on it) team didnt even bother to translate the japanese dialogue. They did it their own way in English. Since then they started to actually translate it. At least that's what I read once.

as much of assholes as they were here, comparing this dialogue to the ones i’ve been reading in new horizons is such a drastic contrast. the villagers have zero personality in nh and what seems like a total of 6 lines overall that they repeat multiple times a day. it’s a shame since villagers are the most major and integral part of the series and they’ve literally been reduced to nothing in nh, makes animal crossing feel as if it’s lost its original charm and what made us all love it in the first place. it’s a shame

Reading about the Able sisters on the wiki is what convinced me, because seeing such serious backstory stuff really surprised me after getting accustomed to the simplistic and constantly cheerful NH characters. I like the gameplay of NH and love its visuals, but at some point it would be nice to see villagers have some actual personality for a change.

Wild World had a great balance between rude villagers and nice villagers, also, talking to the able sisters regularly gives you way more interesting dialogue than what NL and NH offers. I got so invested in their backstory when I played it as a kid. Never played City Folk but I reckon it's not too far off from what Wild World is.

I notice that in the older games, the animals are more emotionally unstable. Like in the game cube and DS version, they go from zero to a hundred in matter of seconds.Then on the Wii they would go into a deep, dark depressive state whenever you denied one of their requests. Maybe they introduced a chill pill and Animal Crossing anger management on the 3DS 😂

@@TigirlakaLaserwolf6 Total EDITS: 5 (as of May 14, 2020) New Horizons needs dynamic villager interaction. Badly. If two of them had a conversation about say, a "true or untrue fact" of a penguin... and neither of them are a penguin, but you have a penguin villager, if you talk to either of the first 2 later on you should see them tell you that the penguin villager explained what was up. Also if they say they're gonna bake a cake or food "tomorrow" you should be able to see them making it or see them sharing it with others and inviting over for dinner. I love NH but it still very much suffers from overly gamey dialogue. And some dialogue honestly needs to be blocked until your island has actually had a specific season... or take into account how long ago a shop was finished. Takes me out of the world when they say stuff like "I planted pitfalls last winter and I'm looking for them" and I'm like "dude literally *none* of us were here last winter". Or "XYZ and I went to the tailor shop a few days ago"... but 2 days ago the shop didn't exist...? Also more dynamic and consistent dialogue trees would be nice. Like if they wanted to give you something but then they say "oh I'll just mail it", if you free up your pockets within like 10 seconds you should be allowed to ask them "You had something for me?" And they're like "oh yeah here you go!" Also villagers being kinder to certain species, either their own or different would be interesting. I also notice, that partially due to the obscene amount of characters, and limited personalities they still feel very samey. A bit off topic for dialogue, but I want to be able to properly use the facilities I decorated my island with. I want to buy a snack or drink or cotton candy. It'd be great if you could ask some villagers (Grumpy or Lazy or Snooty would be harder to convince if ever) to work as an assistant in shops too. Like if they accept, you can suggest a shift (30 mins?) And they'll say they'll do it depending on how late it is. And they also ask you if you wanna play like beach volleyball or something with them. But you're never allowed to. it's just a *thing* they say. The reason I find the dialogue so offputting is that the villagers are more alive and energetic than ever. They actually work out or run or clean and emote to each other. They swap clothes while out, they hold more than tools in their hands. So when there's very limited interaction it feels... well, empty. (Also for the love of god let them catch fish or bugs without giving up or waiting specifically until the bug is out of reach... seriously what is that) And while I'm on the topic of "interaction" it'd be cool if some furniture could count as multiple things. Like bunkbeds. I should theoretically be allowed to climb up to the top. And I should be able to sit on top of my freezer if no one is opening it. Just for fun. Some desks with stuff on them already should have a "free" slot on one side to put a small thing there. EDIT: I also want to actually rock in rocking chairs... or spin in wheeled chairs. And fish while sitting. EDIT 2: If I pass up on a deal that someone wanted to sell to me I should be allowed to change my mind if I talk to them again in the next few minutes. I get this is make haggling for a lower price a risk but most rational people would be allowed to...change their mind. EDIT 3: They should have dialogue pertaining to watching a tarantula get caught. Lyman looked relieved and I expected him to say thanks for getting rid of the tarantula in his path. Also I was provoking Monty multiple times and I can keep apologizing no matter how much I abuse him... in fact after I had made him depressed and angry six times each, he rather gave me a bicycle helmet and said it was for "being so good to him". Good god this is dumb. And HE IS SUPPOSED TO BE GRUMPY. What is this goddamn interaction... EDIT 4:My villagers are not disturbed or confused in the slightest by my wearing something that covers my entire face. Also I wish that at least a few villagers had more personalized dialogue, like the super heroes. Or even HELL reuse the personality dialogue from WW or CF or NL for some villagers. Sure we've seen it all before - but we've already seen the NH dialogue before, god knows lol. It may not be brand new but it would be SOMETHING to add some spice to the samey personalities. EDIT5: Why why why can I not change their catchphrase or greeting after I already did it with them? Why do I need to wait everytime until they get bored of it? I messed up and forgot to add a period to a greeting and it looks so stupid... I really wish villagers had specialized relationships with others. Like they're more inclined to hang out with certain ones and actually (mention) avoiding others. It's so boring that just about everyone is treated with the same treatment just because of personality combinations. The gifts and visits to other villagers are just random. "Oh wow I never expected to be invited here" YOU WERE HERE BEFORE. And that's another thing. There's no consistency. Why do peppy villagers have a "lolrandom" dialogue about losing their voice and then they immediately get over it the next time you talk to them? There should instances of like say "Remember the time we went to Coco's house? That was cool." Or "Hey, player. I'm really glad you swung by earlier/yesterday/the other day. It made my day." We need interactions that take into account how many hours or days occurred since something. I cannot stress this enough. Maybe I'm asking a lot but the villagers should be the meat of the game and they are just not very fun to talk to. I also want to work towards maybe making some meaner characters nicer... or hey maybe you don't want to and you just leave em. ANYTHING to help have a goal to work towards Anyways that's just my thoughts.

This is just my own theory, but I think that the reason GC Animal crossing had such rude villagers was because of the localization team. If you see the way it was first advertised to American audiences, one of the commercials tried to sell it as some kind of reality t.v. drama show (maybe because they thought the core gameplay wouldn't be enough to sell kids on it at the time).

@@TrueLadyEvilChan Literally just right now in New Horizons I was talking to Cookie and she was like "Its so sunny and nice out right now, what should I wear?" WHEN ITS 10 O'CLOCK AT NIGHT??!! Nintendo, y'all delayed the game and still have slip ups like this, I've never experienced little things like this in previous installments of the game...it honestly ruins the gameplay experience, I find myself playing New Leaf more because it's so much more polished in my opinion...

As someone who was bullied a lot as a kid, I’m glad they toned this stuff down by the time wild world came out… of course now the villagers are really lacking, but I’m glad they don’t make comments about you gaining weight or calling you mentally ill anymore… I mean seriously what was the team thinking including those lines? I get that it was a little while back now but jeez. I propose we keep the sass but get rid of the personal stuff.

I specifically remember my dad hating the rudeness feature and he actually returned the game for a while because it seemed "aggressive" :( I was so mad at him as a kid then my mom convinced him to do some research and my brother and I got my copy back.

Yikes lmao. As much as I would love some more emotion in ACNH villagers, this is way worse. I was a sensitive kid and this would've made me not want to play this game at all. Hell, even as an adult, the rudeness gets offputting after a while, it's not even funny or cute anymore. The shift to an overall more positive vibe was a step in the right direction. Now they just need more personality, hobbies, likes, dislikes, differing abilities to stay mad after being harassed, ect. Friendly reminder that rudness is not synonymous with having a personality.

Jirachey Mostly I think they don't have their sassy attitude from the original game in New Leaf because you ARE the mayor. Maybe it's just because they respect you more then if you were just a neighbor. Although, I have had some villagers that have been fairly rude to me in New Leaf. Mostly after I go moping around shaking trees and get stung.

They're much more subtle now. Like asking you to sit with them while taking up the entire bench, or you see them sitting down, and then second you join them they get up.
