Hank tells us about new research into the question of how animals navigate from place to place - while the problem is still unresolved, we do have some hypotheses, and they all involve something called "magnetoreception."

I'm no Hank, nor am I a chemist, but the basic gist is that: -Some atoms have more neutrons to counteract protons from being repulsive to each other. -These neutrons add more mass. -The extra mass causes instability. -The atoms break down, releasing radiation. -A half-life is the time it takes for these elements to lose half of their material. Hope this is helpful.

This is the insight that one of the people my dad knows gave on why cows always face the same direction - We've spent so much time and money doing studies on this and he just says, "Cows travel in grazing herds. They're always moving, so they all have to be moving in the same direction, thus they face the same direction."

I seem to have a knack for knowing which direction is which. For example, driving on a windy road through a heavily-forested area (where all you can see is trees, trees and more trees) that I've never been along before, and with all those corners and turns I still seem to know which general direction I've come and which direction I should be going. I've always thought it could be some sort of subconscious "directional memory", but cryptochrome? Interesting...

I am always able to point North, my friends once tested me by blindfolding my and spinning me on an office chair, I still managed to get it right even though I was dizzy. I also have a great sense of direction. Aside from in the supermarket when I was a small child and toddled away from my mother, I have never gotten lost in my life.

I agree with cog3125. I have a tendency to get lost a lot especially now that I've moved to a new city but whenever I'm trying to follow directions and I get lost I find that I always seem able to navigate my way back to a familiar place, and thus I am able to get back home. I also find that when I am out in the forest because I'm camping or when I used to be a field biologists, I also had a good sense of direction on foot.

I live in the Plains, since I worked in the oil fields I spent more time outdoors than many farmers/ranchers, and never noted a North/South orientation, other than their butt to the North in a cold Winter wind. I have paid more attention ever since persons basing the observations based solely on photographs put out their theory. Here on Terra firma I don't notice cattle universally facing either North or South. In the event that domesticated grazing animals where left to their own devices they would migrate like the wild Bison, and humans have always migrated, following the food sources. There are so many factors that could be at play, I think it's jumping the gun to say cattle can sense the Earth's magnetic field.

Bees do use the sun to navigate and use the sun as a reference when they "dance" to pass information (such as a nectar source) on to other bees. They also can see in infrared and ultraviolet. They are quite amazing and I wouldn't be surprised if they have magnetic receptors too.

My theory why people are horrible with direction is because we tend to have a lot of obstacles in the way. The reason why I have a fairly decent sense of direction is because I remember how to get from pt. A to pt. B in a straight line, rather than making a turn there, or walk into that street, etc. I just try to stay on that straight line path, and unless I meet a dead end, I usually find my way.

I'm not really educated on the subject, but when you squint your eyes your eyes vibrate a tiny amount and since your eyes are squinted, the light will then be received on different locations in the back of your eye. And that's what creates the "shadows" of your veins, you actually see these at all the time, but your mind decides to ignore the information since they are always there(the way you don't really see your nose all the time, the brain decides to ignore it). The swirlies I don't know.:)

In Western usage, anime usually refers to Japanese animation. Avatar is not Japanese. And either way, most anime are still cartoons, as "cartoon" refers to (and I quote from Wikipedia): "a film for the cinema, television or computer screen, featuring some kind of story or plot (even if it is a very short one), which is made using drawings". In fact, a Japanese person would use the word "anime" (アニメ) to refer to e.g. Disney films.

I can't remember what tribe it was or what episode of QI I heard it on, but the tribe is always able to tell which way is North because their language doesn't have right or left, but North, South, East, and West. In this way, the refer to their limbs based on the cardinal directions from their center. Disorientation can occur, but it is generally rare.

They are. If he's talking about what I think, these animals can have entangled electrons separated by a tiny distance in their eyes, and these electrons would "feel" the magnetic field differently, thus allowing them to "see" the magnetic field. This is an awesome feat, since entanglement in lab is only seen with near 0K temperatures, still they think this is the case because of the sensibility of the animals to small magnetic fields: wired.com/wiredscience/2011/01/quantum-birds/

I've seen you around and recognize you as a high voltage/tesla coil enthusiast. I have been experimenting with altering the alignment of certain diamagnetic protein molecules in the body using ion and EM fields, and I believe that the alignment of these molecules defines human body capacitance (causes some people to retain more static than others). Theoretically anyone who works closely with RF currents like TCs can increase their capacitance. Look up Electro-Elite Innovative Technology!

It's because "para"-magnetic molecules, that is ones that have "unpaired" electrons in their outer molecular orbitals (like diatomic oxygen), are able to interact with magnetic fields. It's basically how the "cathode ray" experiment discovered the existence of the electrons negative charge.

I wonder if eye site correlates to a sense of direction. Not due to lack of a ideal concave shape of the cornea, but the lack of information received from the optic nerve. Such as people with ambliopia or lazy eye. That would be the first experiment I would try first if I could to determine if we have this hidden ability.

Interesting video! This is an invitation to see an artist theory on the physics of light and time! This theory is based on just two postulates 1. Is that the quantum wave particle function Ψ or probability function represents the forward passage of time itself 2. Is that Heisenberg’s Uncertainty Principle ∆×∆p×≥h/4π that is formed by the w-function is the same uncertainty we have with any future event within our own ref-frame that we can interact with turning the possible into the actual!

How about the magnetic belts? (google for magnetic belt vibration) - they're just belts that all the vibrate a bit to the direction of north. There's quite a few tests for first activating peoples sense of north and then taking the belts away and seeing if it sticks. Could scishow look into that?
