Animal Rights Extremists: Trespassing to Rescue Chickens

Direct Action Everywhere (DxE) is an animal liberation group that is notorious for its large-scale actions which sometimes involve illegal tactics such as civil disobedience and trespassing.
DxE sees their actions as essential to forwarding their cause of exposing injustices in the Animal Agriculture System. However, some of DxE’s opponents, especially those who have been directly targeted by DxE, have labeled them as actual terrorists after their aggressive occupations and protests.
VICE documents as DxE embark on their largest actions to date: occupying an egg farm in Petaluma, CA and removing chickens from the property. VICE also speaks with the co-owner of the egg farm who claims that DxE’s actions are not only illegal, but detrimental to the possibility of a constructive dialogue between Animal Rights Activists and members of the Animal Agriculture Industry.

Wesley O. Ye I agree. I don’t support animal cruelty or support unethical farms, which is why I normally read the packaging when I buy meat. There should be stuff done about unethical and cruel animal enclosures and farms but gathering people and having people trespass and go to jail isn’t the way to move forward. They should report it and let people who can legally enter the premises inspect the farm and animals.

Reminds me of the animal rights group in Australia that broke into a small egg farm and released all of their chickens during the night. When the farmers showed up the next day, they found all of the chickens dead in the field next to the farm, as the foxes had slaughtered all of the chickens released. They didn't even eat all or even most of them, but just killed them. These were chickens that the farmer said his children had raised by hand and took careful care of them everyday. But the "animal rights activists" threw them right out to their freedom with the foxes. What's that old saying about the road to hell being paved with good intentions?

Dat8bitFlow You neglect the point that someone being upset that chickens die means that a farmer may struggle to feed his family or a company may have to lay off employees, all because it threatens the mental utopia these people have built up. @@fin4204 That's an incredible oversimplification of the issue. It's not just that things die, it's that they're being needlessly killed. Again is it really okay to allow someone to benefit from the unnecessary suffering and death of another? Would you have made the argument that they may not be able to feed their family to defend slavery. Which most likely isn't even the case in this situation, there's plenty of ethical jobs out there. They could even still remain farmers and harvest crops instead. This also isn't about a "mental utopia". These people take the morals of our society and put them into practice. Yes we need to eat but the things we eat don't have to be animals.

Do you see the stupidity of your argument? You are comparing a life of a human to the life of an animal. Yes we do need to eat animals, we are omnivores. Humans need the vitamin b12 and the majority of our intake we get from foods made from animals. Currently, vegans with b12 supplements only barely get enough and the simple fact that vegans need supplements to survive should be a clear indication that it is not a healthy lifestyle. And what is so immoral about farmers harvesting animals? The fact that they kill animals? What do lions, dogs, cats, sharks eat? You’d never call them immoral. I applaud Vice for reporting on this issue. However, I've read a few comments about the "unbiased" approach that they took in the making of the video, and I disagree. With a title like "Animal Rights Extremists," it presents DxE and all other vegan activists as "militant" and "terrorists." Not to mention, the video is clipped and edited to paint a clear narrative: vegans are extreme and deserve detainment and castigation. Then the audacity to allow this farmer to pull the victim card? THIS is harmful and "unconstructive" Mr. Mike! You're not the victim. These chickens are. These people (DxE lawyers) did the due-diligence to see if it was legally feasible to rescue animals. Animals that are systematically farmed and killed, seen as property. Don't fault someone for rescuing injured/sick animals, the fault lies within the system which is designed to mass-breed and mass-murder innocent lives. Do better humanity.

@@CurtisV0llmar The problem here is, there is such a thing as supply and demand. The ones actually causing those animals to suffer are those who buy that meat/eggs. The farmer is just doing what a nation wants them to do, so don't target the farm, or yes, in my eyes the farmer is the victim, I am not saying factory farms aren't horrible, because they are, and cause a great deal of suffering. Which is why I am choosing to raise as much of my own meat as I can, chickens so far, and heading into goats and sheep.

@Daniel Kintigh I get what you're trying to say, but I think your comparison is apples and oranges. Turtle eggs are protected because they are endangered, whereas humans are currently at no risk of extinction. It's not the same sort of law in question, which, when considered alongside the only common ground between your point and Christopher's being "corrupt laws" (which is a bit too loose and thus feels quite jarring) makes your whole argument sound much like rambling. This is a problem because such a tone can make an otherwise well merited argument feel absurd or nonsensical.

The biggest issue with this farm appears to be the battery cages. Keeping chickens under those conditions is cruel. Birds should be allowed to express their normal behaviour and roam freely which does not appear to be happening here. Surely we can all agree that having an animal spend its entire life in a cage where it is treated as an egg laying machine is wrong.
