It just goes to show that it doesn't matter how strange an animal looks, everything has a reason, every silly looking adaptation is there to help an animal survive and continue it's species. And these definitely would be a sight to behold.

Quick correction at 1:08! While a recent study suggested a Proboscidean to be the largest land mammal ever, this isn’t fully recognized and needs more research. Currently the animal usually given that title would be Paraceratherium, part of the order Perissodactyla (or Odd-Toed Ungulates).

It's so interesting how animals evolved over the years. Our crew talked about how elephants in Mozambique have a rare natural trait: tusklessness. Female elephants stopped developing them. With a surprising consequence: 51% of the surviving female elephants in Gorongosa had no more tusks after fifteen years of civil war, escaping the poacher's target. Yet, what does this mean to whole ecosystems?

You guys should cover Paracertherium, the largest terrestrial mammal currently known in the fossil record.
@sq_uids
@sq_uids Жыл бұрын
It WAS the largest terrestrial mammal we knew of, that title of largest got taken by paleoxodon namadicus(the asian straight tusked elephant). Paracatherium was 4.8 meters tall and weighed 17 tons, while paleoxodon was 5 meters and 22 tons, easily dwarfed the paracatherium

Small point: These animals are referred to as just "Moa", not "Moa birds". Same applies to "Kiwi". They are not referred to as "Kiwi birds". "Moa" and "Kiwi" are both Maori words and do not have an "s" added for plurals. In the same way, "Ostriches" are not referred to as "Ostrich birds". The same applies to "Horses", they are not referred to as "Horse mammals". 🙂

I don't understand why the analogy of a scyther is used. Not working with farm tools often I probably don't know all the uses of each object. But when around 4:00 it's explained how the trunk drags vegetation across the tusks to cut it. But it doesn't explain how that motion is made: front to back, side to side, in between the tusks? See, what I imagine a more scythe-like swing is the animal moving it's lower jaw side to side through the grass or plants they eat, picking up the cut pieces with their trunk.
