@@buttsbuttsbutts68 how many of them are playing at the level of Garstka, though? With AAL there is constant odd time signatures and polymeters everywhere, obviously his style is built from the area of music he's come from, like jazz fusion as you mentioned, but his parts are relentlessly complex and ever changing.

Gartska is a monster drummer, saw them live at Red Rocks and dude somehow, albeit just barely, outshined his band mates, not by much but his drumming is truly next level musicianship; Buddy Rich would have no shit to talk on Gartska

@@buttsbuttsbutts68 that's... Blatantly false? There are only a handful of drummers I would consider to be on his level or above him, such as Luke Holland, the actual GOAT. Modern jazz drummers are not playing anything like matt, and jazz drummers in general have never reached his level of technicality. I know jazzheads love to claim technical elitism, but they are extremely predictable because they're so shit at composing crazy grooves like matt and luke, which is why they stick to a genre of just improv, while modern prog metal drummers play jazz better than jazz drummers, and move into literally every genre imaginable in their search for greater technique. Ask Matt to play jazz, he will. Ask a jazz drummer to play a jason richardson song or even just a rap song, and he'll fumble over himself.

This is my favorite tune of the year. These guys are, both individually and as a group, some of the best musicians of our time.

That whole album is amazing. Monomyth and The Problem of Other Minds (including that opening track to it) are very honorable mentions for me, but, yes, Red Miso is also my stand out this year as well. I can't get enough of this song. Matter of fact, this is one of the only albums I even listen to; and of course their older catalogue. I found the new Polyphia album to be a tad lackluster, but they make the musical rounds for me too.

I love their decision to go for a straight up THALL breakdown in the middle there (5:00). Don't hear that style out of them too often.

Ah I thought that section was the weakest section of this song. I am heavily into thall music but that section sounded a bit derivate or superficial to me? Like it hits the 'thall' spot but at the same time it doesnt at all. Do love their experiments tho and I'm incredibly stoked to see them live at the end of this year!

Really digging the new look -- both the no cap look and the new visuals in the video :) I'm glad to see you talk about the drummer so much. As impressive as the guitar work is AAL will always be something I go to for drumming. His name is Matt Garstka and he did a playthrough of the AAL track Lippincott on Drumeo a while ago and it is a video I return to often. Not only is it impressive just for the recreation of the song but I'm pretty sure there's an amazingly intense fill at 2:00 that is thrice as technical as the the studio fill there. Oh yeah, and look at the hit marks on his snare -- the dude is the epitome of precision.

Most of my friends just aren't really into music so they just really know some youtube rappers or the artists that are super popular at the time.

I just saw them in June with Devin Townsend and Dream Theater! Probably the best show I have ever been to and I have been to a lot! They all killed it…I hadn’t heard of Animals before and I purposefully didn’t listen to them before the show so I could be surprised and they made my jaw drop! Especially when I was looking for a bass player 😂😂 And Devin, I mean..it’s freaking Devin Townsend! I saw Strapping ages ago but I was backstage with friends and didn’t actually get to see only kind of hear it so this made up for it! I was so excited to see him! And of course I knew Dream Theater and they killed it as well…to see Petrucci on guitar and Jordan Rudess on his rotating keyboard…and the visuals! Just an all around surreal experience! 🙌🏻

HI GEEBZ!!! Long time no see, i havent checked out the channel a few months, very nice to return to Animals as Leaders. an old band from the 2000s called "psyopus" has a some really cool, spastic songs. chris arp, their guitarist, is legendary (his masterpieces are the "Imogen's Puzzle" parts 1-3 ). their first album is called "ideas of reference", after the psychological term (the false beliefs that random or irrelevant occurrences in the world directly relate to oneself. When someone believes their thoughts, actions, or presence caused an event to occur, they are experiencing this cognitive distortion.) they have extremely interesting topics, and SUCH unique songs. give em a try! have a great day geebz, thanks for giving your thoughts on such an amazing band. I saw Animals As Leaders live with Dream Theater and Devin Townsend (didn't care for the latter, lol). I don't regret coming late or spending about a hundred bucks on the ticket to perform the chore of listening to the other bands.

@@yhamez37 OH!!!!! where did you obtain it? their other albums are just as good, the same sense of strong songwriting, but with some cleaner production. they have a 12'' vinyl called "3003" with a demo of "Mannekin" (Changed spelling) and "Bones to Dust" (The closer) released shortly before the debut. it has a really cool geometric album cover. i believe they also have a tape of material from their touring, its on discogs as a bootleg but I can't find it anywhere. information on the band is very scarce, even their MySpace is defunct / stripped, and I don't see any old music forum posts or even live shows on KZfaq. It's like they've been erased from the annals of history. It's even worse, because I can't find any information about the members, let alone any of the vocalists they had on rotation on their other albums after Adam Frappoli (Vocals on Ideas of Reference debut) left. At least Chris Arp is somewhat active, I bought his insane guide to tapping and some music theory, called "Exploding Fingers".

@@billy2896 I probably misspoke by saying album. It’s a CD ;D I got it at FYE back in the day when that was their main reason for existence. It’s crazy how some bands just disappear into the ether. It’s a shame because I really like that album. I want to say I even saw them at a small roller rink, but that was at a very tumultuous time for me. I wasn’t in a place to be present at the show then, so I might misremember that.
