Fact: The main reason why David Bowie and his character doesn't sing in this Season 5 SpongeBob episode was because in real life, Bowie actually had suffered a heart attack and even retired from singing before this SpongeBob episode had aired on TV. True story right there.

David Bowie is the only part of this episode that I like. Not his character, just him in general.

What surprises me is that SpongeBob's songs suck. Episodes like Hello Bikini Bottom, FUN, & The Camping Episode show that Tom Kenny has a really great singing voice.

To be fair, I always loved how comedic Plankton's song was: "Come on, Plankton, just pick one and FORGET about your shoes!"

I just realized what they were thinking with the amulet, sense all these characters are fish-sized, it would make sense for a human amulet to be decently large compared to them.

I'll admit, the first song of the episode was bad overall, but the last few notes when Spongebob says "last all day" were beautiful.

From what I've heard, this was originally just supposed to be a regular 11-minute episode about SpongeBob and Patrick going to see the world's oldest bubble, but the Nick executives forced them to turn it into a special. Hence why Squidward, Sandy, Mr. Krabs, Plankton, and all of the gratuitous songs were shoehorned in.

I love how everyone that said they actually liked this episode at one point said they liked it when they were specifically 8 years old. The consistency of that is more magical than this episode of SpongeBob.

Remember that episode where Spongebob pulls a spatula out of a greece pile (referencing Sword in the Stone) which summons King Neptune who in the end offer's Spongebob a place in Atlantis (which was NOT a "Lost Civilization", looked way different than what's portrayed here when shown through the portal that Neptune came through and had the god of the fucking sea in charge instead of a totally uncreative douche cosplaying as a stereo-typical alien 'cause of the brain)? Where the fuck is Neptune in this... whatever this is?

The entire episode is basically a parody of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Really? This is the most hated episode ever? I personally think A Pal for Gary and The Splinter are WAAAAAAY worse than this one. Heck, while I never really liked A Pal for Gary and The Splinter (even as a kid), I remember kind of enjoying this episode when it came out (I was probably around 8 back then).

8:16-The famous paintings gags were done right earlier in Looney Tunes:Back In Action,instead of shoehorning a characters face on it,they had Bugs,Daffy,& Elmer interact in them,and they are one of the better parts in this movie.

People dodn't like this episode? It wasn't even bad. The bubble joke was funny. The visuals on some of the songs were actually really nice. This felt like a HUGE stretch to get onto this list. Your anger felt forced and you referenced other episodes from other shows way too much. It is criminal though, that Bowie never got to sing.

This was actually a pretty decent episode in my opinion. Everyone was in character and spongebob didnt act slow like he does in the more current episode. I think now that he isnt even giving the show a chance. I agree that episodes like one course meal and a pal for gary were horrible but that doesnt mean that all the post movie episodes are as bad as those. I really enjoyed Atlantis Squarpantis.

It's possible that the "amulet" in question was made to be worn by a human, which would make it a more reasonable size (if not too small for an amulet). Though I can't imagine why the Atlanteans would make it that size considering they're not human-sized...

I remember liking this episode and watching it repeatedly when I was 8, but now I realize how sloppily written it actually is.

As a kid, I thought this special was great. But I had a different sense of quality.

Sandy can't sing? Didn't she sing a song in Texas? Was it not as good as I thought? Doug Lawrence can sing, in my opinion. Plankton's half of FUN was great to me at least.

I have come up with what I think would have been a much better plot for an Atlantis-themed episode. Tell me what you think: The Annual Fry Cook Games are being held again, this time in scenic Atlantis, to be hosted by King Neptune himself. As the top fry cook in Bikini Bottom, Spongebob is invited to compete, and takes all his closest friends along with him. Before the Games can officially begin, however, aliens invade to conquer Atlantis, led by Lord Royal Highness (who is the villain in this version). LRH claims that, eons ago, Atlantis was an alien colony on Earth, but due to some plot contrivance it was abandoned and sank beneath the sea. King Neptune found it and re-outfitted it to suit his artistic tastes, and it has served as his capital ever since. Now LRH and his minions are back to reclaim what's theirs, and they'll torment anyone who gets in their way. So it's an all-out war under the sea, between the armies of Lord Royal Highness and the alliance under King Neptune, with poor Spongebob Squarepants caught in the middle. Now THAT would be a movie, wouldn't you say? :)

Your complaint about the details of the "amulet" seem to ignore an important fact. The characters of Spongebob are indeed smaller than humans in size. This fact may justify the size of the amulet, but still not justify the quality of the episode.

The episode wasn’t bad in my opinion. It was comedic in multiple ways, and seeing the characters happy is very nice.

I love how in the first song they're singing about how fragile bubbles are but sponge bob is using a bubble as a microphone, and it's not popping.

This episode was crap, but I did enjoy the game based off of it a lot. Also, it's a shame to see someone like David Bowie pass away. He was my favorite along with Chyna. I'll miss those guys. :^(

If you want a real Spongebob film, watch the original theatrical one, which the series ignored in terms of character progression after it was released, which is debatably what led to its shittiness. Remember Spongebob learning what it means to be responsible, strong, brave and actually growing as a character more than he ever did even in the early seasons of the show? See why it should have been the finale? It was Spongebob's coming of age story in a way, him finally becoming more mature, but instead the series made him more childish. I hope the man who decided to continue the series after the movie never works in the animation industry again, because he honestly doesn't deserve to.

Seeing as I thoroughly enjoyed this episode when I was a little kid, I think they did a good job. Applying THIS MUCH criticism to a kid's show is unnecessary. You can find really intelligent writing in Spongebob that's masked behind typical children's cartoon nonsense. And other episodes are just made to be entertaining. Personally, the blend of the 2D animation and the other graphics made this episode standout so much. Then again, I am looking back on it with the rose tinted glasses of nostalgia.

How can you hire an incredibly talented singer like David Bowie and not give him a single musical number? It doesn't make any sense.
