Great tips! But I have some questions .. What type of shots should I include in my reel if I want to it to be suitable if I applied in a feature company or a game studio .. Also if I want to apply in a game studio should I include cartoony shots or only ‘real’ body mechanics shots ? Thanks in advance
@jeandenishaas
@jeandenishaas 5 жыл бұрын
Each type of studio will have different needs, so for feature companies it's going to be more about performance, whereas game studios would look at more gameplay body mechanics (or performance if you want to join the cinematics team), cycles, etc. In terms of realistic or cartoony, depends on the studio and what their portfolio is. Do they focus on realistic animation and mocap? Or is it more cartoony? All depends on the company. I highly recommend watching these discussions here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ndiFlNeVl5--fok.html& and kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b8eGmbOntrW7Z40.html

Great video, thanks for the tips ! I have a question. It seems to me that my second best shot is the playground one, with the guy going "Wasn't that just magnificent ? I was worried it would get a little dodgy in the middle part, but then that finally, woaw !". So in logic I should end with that shot. But I'm not sure as that could be perceived as very meta in a way, like I'm talking about my reel^^ Meaning that it could either be taken as a joke, or as a very pretentious claim. What do you think ?
@jeandenishaas
@jeandenishaas 5 жыл бұрын
Arnaud Choisy Hahaha I think you might be overthinking it, going Tarantino with “I think this is my master piece.” :) But if you’re worried why chance it? Just use another closing clip.

Hey Jean, wanted to ask if the plagiarism rule applies for my specific case. I'm working on a 3d animated shot for my demoreel, inspired from a 2d scene in a movie. I'm already halfway through completion and now bothered that it may not be usable for my reel. Its a 3d adaptation of the 2d shot within a different narrative/context, in other words I've taken creative liberties on poses keeping the overall tone/energy of the acting as close as possible to the original. Would appreciate some advice and thank you for the great content.
@jeandenishaas

chucknorrisffs I’d have to see it but from just reading this it would be okay as an exercise but not something you’d want to put on a reel.

As long as it’s not confusing it’s okay to cut from shot to shot.

Hello Jean, what if I have two strong shots each is a minute scene one take (no cuts). Lets say 2 minutes for both but now I want to do another 20sec acting dialogue. Would that be okay?
@jeandenishaas
@jeandenishaas 5 жыл бұрын
DIAKOURSHEET Not sure. A one minute long no cut shot needs to be amazing. And then two of those? Chances are you can cut them down. And I wouldn’t do a 20s acting shot either. It’s so long (unless it’s amazing of course)... That’s 2m20s for three shots. In that time you could show so much more! Don’t forget that variety is important too!

@@jeandenishaas here is one of the shot kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qJiKpdt7t727aYU.html The reason I dont want to cut it down because then u miss the beats or the story. next one, Im working on is action and it could be a minute as well. Its true 20sec is too long for acting but I was thinking maybe have a 10-15 sec two character acting and a 5 sec more close-up one so 2:20 hopefully?

@jeandenishaas
@jeandenishaas 5 жыл бұрын
DIAKOURSHEET Sorry, missed this! To me it does feel too long. You could select shorter moments as highlights on your reel and maybe include the whole thing at the very end after the closing credit card?
@DIAKOURSHEET
@DIAKOURSHEET 5 жыл бұрын
@@jeandenishaas wouldnt that make the reel longer if I add that extra minute after? or you mean have those 1 minutes short just before the closing credit then show them all after? If they interested by the ending credit they would see the whole thing, if not then they can just stop by the closing credit? if thats what you mean, would that be okay? 3-4 minutes reel. Thanks, I hope im not confusing you

0:50 Isn't that obvious? I mean... Do people actually do that? xD I can see it happening with people who don't know anything about the world (industry) out there but for people applying for established studios... Do they actually do it? xD
@jeandenishaas
@jeandenishaas 5 жыл бұрын
Bijoy Pandey Yes, I hear it happens. Mostly beginners do it from different countries (I’ve seen my shots reused). But different but sometimes you put work on your reel from age old projects and you might forget that someone else worked on that shot too and then ownership gets fuzzy. That’s not stealing but still tricky and better safe than sorry and don’t use it.
@bijoyp
@bijoyp 5 жыл бұрын
@@jeandenishaas yeah that might also be an issue. I've seen people grey out the scenes they did not animate in their reel, so that is a good and easy way to sort things out :)
