Osamu Dezaki is one of my favourite anime directors. I think it's a great shame that he isn't as well renowned as his peers, so i've made this video to highlight his fantastic career and his enormous impact on anime.

you need to take manga, the leading comicmedium in japan, and its iconography into account here when talking about anime impressionistic backgrounds .. also sometimes you´re a little optimistic ... multilayered backgrounds and foregrounds even exist in cheap shows like scooby doo in the 70´s and is no technical feat or anything , its also not his invention

Its kinda easy, even if somebody really dislikes old anime, because of some stupid stereotypes, just show them something made by him, especially from late 70s onwards, and they probably would like it, this shit is fucking gorgeous.

Great video. Many Dezaki's works have been imported here in Italy with huge commercial success. I consider my self lucky to have been able to spend my childhood with the amazing works of geniuses like Dezaki.

Really awesome video, Dezaki has always been my favourite TV director. Since Ashita no Joe has been completely fan translated now and Rose of Versailles has been remastered and released in the west by Nozomi that his popularity will increase for people willing to watch old school anime.

you didn't mention that joe episode 51 uses a fast frame technique to represent a character's mental instability, that sequence was a source of inspiration for hideaki anno.

This guy is probably mostly responsible for the modern anime aesthetic as we know it today. A sort of surrealist-influenced medium of animation, I'd say.

Enjoyable video, nice to see some Dezaki analysis. Shame that you didn't mention Takarajima, or Treasure Island, that is a brilliant show, it was actually a big influence on Hiroyuki Imaishi for TTGL, and it actually invented the head tilt which was later popularised by Shaft.

A big thank you from France... Dezaki, with Sugino, Araki, Himeno, YAZ, and such as them, are so very often under appreciated, and left behind other masters such as Otomo or Miyazaki... This video should be viewed in many art schools.

An important part of Dezaki we can't understimate is his connection to shoujo - Rose of Versailles, Ace wo Nerae! and Oniisama e. One of the greatest contributions he made to anime is forcing people to take shoujo a bit more seriously. He told stories about female characters with the same dignity, drama, and cinematic sensibility he gave to his other more action-oriented series. He even said in an interview: "Girls are more imaginative than boys, so their sensibilities are fascinating. I feel, as I work. Girls aren’t all these effeminate entities that are crying all the time, as we men might think. They have terrifying sides too. (LAUGHS). And they have strength too, and that’s something I’d like to depict."

Don’t forget his 1988 Josie manga adaptation, Kasei Yakyoku. 4 OVAs it really seems to anticipate Oniisama in some ways (but with a 1920s setting and more graphic sex and violence). The story is too rushed really but it’s gorgeous to watch despite a compromised budget.

Watching Onii-Sama right now, and i't bonkers the similarities there are to it in Cowboy Bepop's Spike-Vicious arc! Even the omnipresent music box theme from onii-sama (18th track in the ost) is reproduced in the track "Memory" form CB!

Before ashita no joe 2 i tought the best anime for battle animation was dragon ball z. ashita no joe 2 literally was so much fluent and epic animations during battle, like joe vs jose Mendoza's fight, which literally made me a fan of this show.

If you haven't seen the movie for Cobra I'd recommend it, a bit more melodramatic compared to the series but considering it's dezaki that's what you want pacing is amazing too. Good retrospective most just note visual gimmicks when discussing Dezaki's work but his framing and use of depth are years beyond his contemporaries, gotta tear into Tomorrow's Joe someday when the manga's less fresh in my mind in the meantime I have a treasure island adaptation he did which is just gorgeous check it out sometime yourself.

it's a shame he never got a chance to adapt Kamimura Kazuo. He looks like he could do justice to his manga, taking into account the mangaka of Ashita no Joe did a collab. with Kazuo. ah well, the manga still exist, can't wait to read them. Super obscure though.

Ironically, despite many of his directorial touches that still fourish today, he also wasn't no stranger to doing outsourced work for American companies such as his involvement on stuff like Mighty Orbots or The Blinkins: The Bear and the Blizzard, just throwing that out there!

Parlare di Dezaki e non raccontare pure l'isola del tesoro,Takarajima, significa non conoscere a fondo la tematica. L'isola del tesoro rimane una delle più belle opere realizzate da Dezaki e non capisco il perché venga sempre cosi bistrattato!! Riscoprite quest'opera che è un capolavoro e John Silver è davvero il più bel personaggio rappresentato da Dezaki. Provare per credere!!

Why did you pick Kurosawa for a samurai film reference? The genre was pretty huge after the US left, and it traditionally had a simple and impactfull style. Stuff like 1965's Sword of the Best. You just skipped to the worst but most well known example in a video about a director that gets ignored. Even more, a lot of his style is mimicking really big directors. The abstract backgrounds were pushed with stuff like Prisoner 701, Golfo is straight up a homage to the Nikatsu noir films. It's just weird that you mention Kurosawa and ignored Seijun Suzuki.

Well I never knew that much of Dezaki until looking at this video. I knew of the Rose one that was big in Shojo Anime as well as inspiring Revolutinary Girl Utena, I also have a DVD of a Space Cobra film. He was working with Tezuka on the Astro Boy anime with Mushi Productions as well as adapting some of his manga into Anime format and the impact that Osamu Dezaki has on the Anime industry is up there with Tezuka and Miyazaki. Great video and I enjoyed it allot looking back at older Anime and the directors and individuals that were behind those series.

Is there any source/info on the parallax background scrolling being something Dezaki was himself bringing to the table stylistically? Shows with Shichiro Kobayashi acting as background director, with or without Dezaki, are famous for it, and the examples you brought up, Aim For The Ace and Nobody's Boy Remi, both had Kobayashi in that role.

I don't think it's as much Dezaki being the first to include it, but being the first to master it and make it an industry standard. It's present in almost every animated work i've seen but Dezaki was the first to include it with such elegance. It would be interesting to have a deeper look into this though, it's one of my favourite animation techniques.

Excellent video, I've only seen 2 Dezaki's works (Rose of Versailles and Oniisama... e) and they both were such a great anime. One of the aspects I enjoyed most of both, besides their incredible narrative, was actually the postcard memories; they look beautiful and increase the tension and intensity of a show. So thanks for the video, I didn't known that was one of his techniques.

Vicente Martinez You should check out Ashita no Joe's 1st and 2nd seasons. They are loaded with tons of great postcard memories (especially the second season) as well as being great sports dramas.

Oniisama e... is a masterpiece. It was one of the first anime series I watched and it really spoiled me for everything else for awhile. Every frame looks like a painting. It's absolutely beautiful. I think his Ace wo Nerae! film and OVA series also deserve a mention here.

Also I believe you got a fact wrong. The first use of cgi in anime was the movie Lensman directed by the legendary Yoshiaki Kawajiri.

For example at 2:00 there seems to be a layer you forgot to delete. It disturbs the pace and overall looks cheap. And at 2:28 there is a flashing frame which you didn't cut out. Your videos are full of these, which I notice right away. But overall I really like your writing and delivery. They fit well with your choice of lo-fi hip hop. Adding sources in description would make your videos pretty much perfect.
