This is the first episode documenting my road to recovery following a broken fibula and tibia. Like many injury setbacks, there comes the physical and mental obstacles to returning back stronger than ever.
In this episode I document the events leading up to my injury, the surgery that followed and what purchases I found helpful to have on hand right after surgery that made my recovery so much better, so if you are about to undergo a foot, ankle or lower leg surgery yourself that will force you to be on strict bed rest for a couple weeks afterwards then this is an episode to watch.

Thank you for this ! I am about 1 month out of surgery! I finally have my boot . I enjoyed watching this video. I hope we all heal faster! It’s frustrating not being able to be independent.

Thank you for watching and happy to hear you have graduated to the boot! 🎊 Oh that was the worst of not being able to live your normal life during recovery. Everything just takes 3x longer than normal to do. Definitely be sure to invest the time and energy into physical therapy as it will get you back to a normal life even faster. Best of luck on your continued recovery!!

Thank you for sharing! I had the exact same break. I am a pretty active person who enjoys barre and weight lifting, so when I found out I wouldn’t be back to 100% for about a year I was sad. Plus, a lot of my summer plans got pushed away. I agree the hardest thing is keeping the leg elevated. I want to go have dinner with friends and family, play my instrument, etc which require me to sit and I can’t have the leg up as high as it needs to be. I’m hoping once I get my cast in a week I can spend more time seated!

Need the pillow. Posting at 4 am because I can’t sleep, and it’s just because I can’t get my foot and cast positioned right. I ended up getting this thing called a “hands free crutch”. Basically converts you to peg-leg mode without being an amputee lol. Blows the crutches/scooter/walker out of the water.

Booked for a Brostrom in 79 days. After 2 years of trying to convince the Canadian healthcare system that I needed it. Top doctor said no problem. But took me 4-5 referrals and constant conservative treatment failures. Frustrating. Especially since I’m actually excited to start recovery 2 months before I even get the surgery!

I'm 5-days post-op - broke both tibea and fisula and across. Was up for about 40 minutes this morning in a wheelchair. Blue toes immediately, and then pain for hours after. I didn't realise extended bed rest would need to be for so long. This was helpful to reset my expectations. Thank you.

You are very welcome, Lisa! I was on strict bed rest with the ankle constantly elevated for a good 5 weeks till I was put in a walking boot. The pain the first week was definitely the worst and got much better 3 weeks after once staples and stitches got removed. My first shower took me about 25 mins and my toes also turned blue as I could feel the pressure build in the ankle. The more it’s elevated, the more you’ll thank yourself. Hang in there as it will get better. Best of luck in your recovery!

Thank you very much for your help with all of this! I have a question about what type of fracture you had; you mention ankle and you mention tibia and fibula. Was this a bimalleolar fracture of the ankle? Thanks again!
@TannerCoxCPA

You are very much welcome - thank you for watching! To answer your question I did break both my tibia and fibula at the end, thus would be considered a bimalleolar fracture.

I’m almost 4 weeks out of surgery for trimalleoar fracture and have transitioned from soft cast to boot. Very uncomfortable because my heel doesn’t touch bottom due to the way my ankle was set. 3 plates 12 screws and 6 pins later

I’m really sorry to hear that! I believe it was close to 7 weeks post surgery before I could attempt to put weight on ankle in the boot and about 2 months to be able to walk without assistance in the boot. Wish you nothing but the best in your recovery! Go to every PT session and ALWAYS do your homework from those sessions. Will go a long ways to making you feel better.

Hey Man, I'm really sorry that this happened, but did you ever have nerve damage? Like... Hot/Cold Tingly sensations?
@TannerCoxCPA
@TannerCoxCPA Жыл бұрын
In the weeks after surgery I did experience a tingly and heat sensation any time I removed my ankle from an elevated position. Get up to use the restroom for 2 mins and it felt like the plates in my ankle were heating up. However, that sensation subsided once into a walking boot. Now 1 year out from surgery I only experience minor tingling when touching or applying pressure to the area (like washing ankle with bar of soap).

I’m so sorry to hear that! It certainly is a long road to recovery but all I can say is be patient with the process and take it one day at a time. Took me 2 month to be able to put weight on it, started to walk (similarly) after 3 months and slowly got back into running after 5 months. Wish you nothing but the best in your recovery
