Towards the end of the Mesozoic, in the Maastrichtian Era of the Late Cretaceous Period, a group of animals existed that were quite unlike anything alive today. Reinforced walls of skin, muscle and armour, lined with tough plates and armed with a flexible tail, tipped with a massive club. These were the ankylosaurus, the largest of which was Ankylosaurus, the subject of today's video. Ankylosaurus is one of the most instantly recognisable and commonly reconstructed of all dinosaurs, and due to its unique shape and lifestyle it has found its way into many books on palaeontology and prehistoric life.
What makes Ankylosaurus particularly interesting is the degree of preservation in some of the specimens that have been uncovered thus far. The remains of these dinosaurs tell us an awful lot about the lifestyle and potential behaviour of Ankylosaurus, which is what we will be running through in today's video. We will look at how this dinosaur spent its days, what it ate, where it lived, and how it was discovered, among other things. Sit back and relax as we take you on a journey through time to uncover Ankylosaurus, the wandering fortress of a dinosaur.

did you know that Ankylosaurs were the most happy dinosaurs of all? The reason they have a big lump on the end of their tails is because they wag their tails so much and it keeps hitting things... its a bit like a bony callous.

Honestly even a T-rex wouldn't likely win against an adult ankylosaurus. Maybe if it caught it sleeping or something but not in a straight up fight. It likely would've been one of those animals everything just avoided as it had poor eyesight and was likely very aggressive to anything that came close.

during the introduction you stated that the "ankylosaurus' are interesting because of their degree of preservation" yet showed an image of a Borealopelta Markmitchelli fossil in the backround . the fossil in the background was not an ankylosaurus, but rather their sister species (a nodosaurid ankylosaur) which seems a bit misleading lol

Yes I can assume as you suggested, this animal would be closer to the ground, legs in position similar to that of a lizard/ or a gecko. I can imagine it would have a similar run too, rather than the typical trot of a rhino. More like a waddle movement, due to the armour constraints on its back.

The robotic voice of the narrator was so monotonous that I had to turn off this video. Too bad, because ankylosaurs are one of my favorites. If you’re so adamant in replacing a human voice by an AI, please do it in with equal or greater quality. Other than the robot voice, the video is great. At least what I saw of it.

I would like to point out that there is zero evidence that ankylosaurs ever used its tail club as a defensive weapon against predators. There is however evidence of them using the tail clubs against each other. We need to be more careful about falling into the trap of thinking that just because something seems plausible, then it must have happened.

@KurNorock
@KurNorock 11 ай бұрын
@@hresvelgr7193 If there is any such evidence, I have not been able to find it. And in fact, neither have paleontologists. There is however a recent study published last year showing very clear evidence that they used those tail clubs on each other. KZfaq doesn't like external links so do a google search for the following: Palaeopathological evidence for intraspecific combat in ankylosaurid dinosaur Also, just on an observational basis, I have always thought the idea of ankylosaurs using their clubs against predators didn't make a lot of sense. The tail is relatively stiff and inflexible. They can't even bend it 90 degrees to the side. In fact, the maximum estimated range of motion is just 100 degrees total. Or just barely over 45 degrees to each side. Meaning, if they wanted to use it against a predator, they would have to make absolutely sure that predator was pretty much directly behind them, where they can't even see it. I see the ankylosaur tail club functioning much like the "horns" of a giraffe. Something that is placed in an awkward location for the body plan and is only usable on members of the same species and nothing else.
