Are people really saying that Anna doesn't know what she's doing? She STARTED on Broadway. She is the second youngest person to ever be nominated for a Tony. She knows what she's doing. She was obviously nervous... but who wouldn't be when they sing with Kristin Chenoweth? Also, Anna's an alto, isn't she? This song is high for an alto. She didn't hit any bum notes and stayed in tune the whole time. She didn't do nearly as bad as some of you are acting like she did. She didn't even do bad at all.
@UnicornFilms20018 жыл бұрын
razrv3lc THANK YOU! This song was clearly written for a higher mezzo-soprano, which is a quarter octave or so higher than what Anna is. Technically, there is no such thing as an alto outside of choral singing, but to make it clearer, it's often added into the female vocal rage. Females are classified by five, if you include alto and mezzo-alto, voice types. Your voice type is the range in which you can comfortably sing. There's soprano, which is represented by Mariah Carey. You have mezzo-soprano, which is represented by Kristin Chenoweth. Then, mezzo-alto, which is represented by Idina Menzel. Next, alto, which is represented by Alicia Keys. Finally, your rare contraltos, which is represented by Adele. The mezzos are pretty loosely defined, while you can easily see see the contraltos and your sopranos. Many mezzos can sing up into the soprano range with practice, and many mezzo-sopranos don't even need practice, making them very hard to classify. Contraltos can't reach soprano if they tried, though they can pull off the low mezzo-alto scale with hard work. Sopranos can hit mezzo-soprano notes, but can't go much lower than a soprano. Only contraltos can really pull off contraltos, though a low alto may be able to get by. In this case, For Good was written for a mezzo-soprano and a mezzo-alto. Anna is not _technically_ an alto, as she doesn't fall low enough, but her voice is lower than Idina's, putting her in an in-between spot. Anna has had practice with a soprano role, through Into the Woods, but her comfortable range appears to be low mezzo-alto. She's also at the disadvantage of not having ten plus years of Broadway performances where she goes from a near soprano to an alto, which Idina does when she belts (especially when she doesn't use engage her head voice when belting with her chest voice). Idina has an impressive range throughout Wicked alone, and Anna hasn't had a ton of practice with that kind of up-and-down range. She also had the option of do-overs and over-recording audio in a studio after the fact when doing Into the Woods. Here she had one shot to just slightly raise her notes to hit the original ones. She did a spectacular job, considering she hit the notes and kept tune. She was nervous trying to fill Idina Menzel's shoes opposite Kristin Chenoweth (who wouldn't be?!?) and wasn't singing in her normal vocal range. She also hasn't had any Broadway experiences since she was twelve, and _a lot changes_ between 27, her age at the time, and 12. A Broadway song is a whole different type of singing, and she did _very_ well. She's not a belter, like Idina, she's more of a pop-Broadway artist. She did *amazingly* well, considering the circumstances, and I don't think we could've asked for a better performance

+razrv3lc Alto? You serious brah? Have you heard some of the crazy ass high notes she's belted? I'm a second soprano and I can't even belt some of the notes she considers "middle range".
@razrv3lc8 жыл бұрын
What high notes are you talking about? I've never heard Anna hit any notes that I'd call crazy high. She doesn't really even belt that much. When I think of high belters, I think of people like Celine Dion and Mariah Carey. Anna's voice isn't anything like those voices.
@UnicornFilms20018 жыл бұрын
***** Endless...no. Certainly very impressive, but she doesn't have a comfortable high soprano or a contra-alto. But if you wanted to showcase her range, I would suggest "on the Steps of the Palace" from Into the Woods and "Still Hurting" from The Last Five Years, which showcase the top end of her range (Into the Woods) and the low end of her range (Last Five Years). Her most comfortable range, a mezzo-alto, is probably best showcased in Pitch Perfect.

First time I have seen Anna Kendrick be nervous - definately at the start. Of course, going with the original Glinda on Broadway must be nerve-wracking. She did a great job here despite the beginning.
@Buc_Stops_Here8 жыл бұрын
***** Yes, Chenoweth may be tiny but she does have a powerful voice that has been heard on Broadway and on television. I have to say although Kendrick does not have that same background, she has a very pretty voice just the same.
@Buc_Stops_Here8 жыл бұрын
***** Yes, but nothing like Chenoweth, right?
@Buc_Stops_Here8 жыл бұрын
***** Not discrediting her, sorry if you don't understand what I am saying. Chenoweth has always been focused on her voice, right? Broadway is where she started. Kendrick on the other hand did start on broadway as well as a child but quickly transitioned to movies and to TV. While Chenoweth focsues on her voice as well as acting since she focuses on broadway and records, Kendrick is more on the acting end of the scale. Yes, she has a fanatastic voice and is much younger - but it is not her focus. She did "Cups" because she can do it - but not because she wants to go after a music career. She has said in interviews she has no plans to do an album. It is sort of like Kirsten Bell - the one actress I can equal Kendrick to. Bell has proved beyond doubt on "Frozen" that she can sing with the best of them, keeping up with Idina Minzel of broadway in that movie. She was also scared beyond belief because the last time she sang publically was at...Julliard in school! However with the huge popularity of "Do you want to build a snowman" in the movie and in record sales she has been encouraged to sing a little more - sort of like Kendrick. Neither will probably do an album anytime soon like Chenoweth - not that they can't - but it is not their focus or interest.
@Buc_Stops_Here8 жыл бұрын
***** Thanks. I admire all three - and respect the choices they made. Believe me, in interviews Bell even was surprised at how well she was received. It gave her the confidence to continue doing it. In some ways her story is even more amazing as she lacked the confidence to do it - something that Kendrick had to overcome a little as well but not nearly as much.

The only other person to achieve that is Barbara Streisand. She is definitely a vet of many types of vocal performance. And she has a better voice than most in Hollywood, on the radio and on Broadway. Megan Hilty is a broadway lifer, but Kendrick blows her away.

Every time I see another video in which Kristin so willingly and openly sings this signature song of hers with others I get tears in my eyes. For one, the song is beautiful and has a great message, one that we all could learn from. Two, it shows what an open heart Kristin has whether singing it with Idina, or Anna or some young 9-year old girl she has never met who wrote to her before one of her shows. I had the good fortune to meet her after a performance during the pre-Broadway run of Wicked in San Francisco back in 2003 and she was the sweetest Broadway "star" I have ever met. My theater company was in the midst of rehearsing for a local production of Steel Pier (which sadly never came off) and when I told her that, she bubbled over about how much she had loved her time (sadly also short) in the broadway production. Chenoweth is a class act, and Anna is too. Kudos to them both.

Alright, I've seen some insightful comments and some shocking comments, so let me add my insight to this: 1.) For Good was written for Kristin and Idina. Idina's comfort zone lies just slightly above Anna's, and raising your notes just slightly is something that makes you think the singer is having an off-day or is not up-to-par, when in fact the song is not quite right for their voice. 2.) Reprising a Broadway role and filling a huge star's shoes alongside said star's original counterpart, who has quite a name as well, is *nerve-wracking*. You're likely to be nervous and not on your A-game. 3.) Anna has a Broadway voice, but has changed and adapted it to her film lifestyle. To go back to Broadway will require more practice than she had. For Good is a very Broadway-style show, and Anna doesn't have that anymore, so this song took a lot from her. 4.) Anna knows what she's doing. She started out her career as a twelve year old in High Society. Admittedly she hasn't done Broadway since, but she's had singing jobs in movies since. She can sing spectacularly well, in fact. 5.) Idina Menzel is best known for her belting. She can hold a powerful note for quite some time and still portray emotion. Anna Kendrick is _not_ a belter. Belting when you're not a belter is hard, and yet she held every note Idina did. 6.) She didn't miss a not or go off tune. She could've been louder, sure, but again, she's not a Broadway singer. I read one particular comment that said she wasn't being Elphie, and this has nothing to do with Anna's singing, but I want to address that. Sure, covering a pop song doesn't requite you to be the artist, but singing a Broadway song requires you to be the character. There are to types of songs, Broadway and recreational. Recreational means there's no backstory that isn't told thorough the song or easily explained in a sentence or two. Broadway means there's a backstory and that the song _is_ a character-developing story. Singing a Broadway song, whether in costume or not, means you are the character. Anna became Elphaba, and that's clear through her emotion and the fact that she did the song. That being said, every person who reprises a Broadway role has leeway to change the character, and that's what Anna did. She changed Elphie, and that's okay, but she *was* Elphaba. Saying a person is singing a Broadway song but not being the character is a disgrace to the song. Think about the "Defying Gravity" from Glee. It became a pointless pop song because the actors weren't Elphie. You have to _be_ the character to do Broadway, and that's exactly what Anna did. So, Bravo

I already read most of the hate comments about Anna and its kinda harsh. Well guys for one think Anna is not Idina Menzel nor she is Elphaba. She may start her career on Broadway, but guess what she is not anymore, she already do singing in movies and that is very far from how you do it in theatrical or Broadway-style. Anna already do her best, and to sing along side someone as famous as Kristin Chenoweth, everyone (and not just her) will definitely nervous and can't be on your A-game (not to mention she must sing Idina part and it was expected from her to be as good as Idina herself). So give her credit guys, she already do her best.

Alex LaCrosse no she honestly wasn’t. This song was written for a mezzo-soprano. Anna is an alto and even though the song was written specifically for Kristin and Idina she still did a good job. She started in broadway after all and has been nominated for a tony because of her talent. She knows what she’s doing and adjusts herself to fit the song. Music is never continuously sang the same way a song is made by its performer not by a judgemental person who couldn’t perform like that if you paid them.

What is with everyone comparing Anna to Elphaba? She isn't being Elphaba here, nor would she play her. But Kristen isn't being Glinda here either. They are singing a song that happens to be from Wicked. Kristen does it at all of her shows with a guest singer (usually an audience member). So stop being like "Anna is so not Elphaba" cause she's not. Nor was she meant to be in this video. But she is amazing. Doubt it? What the new footage from Last Five Years. I had doubts, a lot of them, before I saw it, but I am so happy that she has met my expectations, at least in that clip and in the reviews so far from TIFF.

@UnicornFilms20018 жыл бұрын
Justin Giachetti No, no, no. Every time you reprise a song from a Broadway show, you must always, always _always_ become the character. It doesn't matter if you're in costume or not or if you've ever played the role. A song that hails from Broadway *DEMANDS* that you become the character, especially a tear-jerker with so much emotion, as this one is.For Good tells the story of two best friends realizing that they will never see each other again, and they're both trying to stay strong for each other while mentally breaking down inside and not wanting their time together to end. It's the final song before Glinda sees her best friend _die_, and you can't disgrace it by not becoming the characters. A Broadway song can't be done without recognizing that a Broadway song isn't just a song but a musical piece that tells a story between two characters. It's not some pop song, it's something that has a backstory and furthers it. If you want to sing Elphaba's part, you need to _be_ Elphaba. You can tell that Kristin was reliving her moments as Glinda, as she still moves her hands he way Glinda did, and she was playing Glinda's part. If Anna wasn't trying to be Elphaba, she a) wouldn't have performed this well, b) wouldn't have deserved to sing it, and c) would have made a big mistake. Anna _was_ Elphaba in this song, you could see it. She didn't have the memories of performing, but she felt the emotion and that's what's important. I completely disagree with your statement that Anna wasn't Elphaba, because she was. That being said, she made Elphie her own. She has a Broadway voice, but has adapted it to fit her film career. She can't belt like Idina ca, and what you should have made your comment about was that that's _okay_. Elphie is whoever the singer makes her, and if Anna chose to do that this way, then so be it. That's who Elphie was for this song. But to go and say that "Anna wasn't Elphie" is ruining everything this song stands for

Anna has been singing for a long time and is nominated for a Tong on Broadway. So I would say she definitely knows what she is doing and is fabulous.

Surprised to go back to this event and see how people are not just rooting for celebrities stepping up and out of their confort zone for a great cause. Like its litteraly a charity, for that one organization that have actively supported vulnerable young member of the LGBTQ+ community for so long. Now we're caught in a global pandemic, the human rights that were taken for granted 5 years ago are at stake, and I guess this simple gesture of people coming together to genuinely help should be sooo appreciated now, but should have been appreciated then. Like props to Anna who tried her best sounded great and props to Kristen who was so generous with her. Props to both of them for even standing on this stage. Purists who chose "perfectionism" over cohesion when its obviously there and needed are nuisances.

1. Kristin Chenowith is an icon. No doubt about it. 2. Anna Kendrick's voice is so stunning and I wish she got more recognition for how amazing she is! Love her film career, but people overlook that she is a professionally trained, award winning Broadway performer!

First of all, I love that there are so many comments on how Anna's ACTUALLY AMAZING that I can't even find any that are saying otherwise. Secondly, I just love how I thought Anna was being all mature and stuff while onstage, but right at the end, she grins at Kristen and when they finish she goes, "I can't believe I just got to do that! That was amazing!" and I'm like oh damn I missed you goofy Anna Kendrick :)

I hate that it took me four years to discover this. I loved their harmonies! It took me a few seconds to realize why Anna was singing lower than Idina, but then remembered that she's an Alto, while Idina is definitely a soprano. They both had fun with the performance, which is the most important thing imo.

anna was so good. and just because she doesn't do Broadway any more doesn't make her worse at it she has changed her voice to deal with movies like pitch perfect and yet she was in last five years and into the woods which shows she still has the capability to sing Broadway songs meaning she can sing both.
