Anna, your list doesn't just describe "new money" people. It also describes a new type I see in our current culture: people who desperately want to appear wealthy, but are actually broke! This is a very generational phenomenon. Because of social media comparison, fast fashion and the abundance of cheap, knock-off accessories and decor, it's easier for people to pretend they are like both new AND old money. Interestingly, I grew up in the 70's and 80's, where this was not possible. I have a few distant, wealthy relatives from England. By today's standards, they would be considered minimalists! Everything was very good quality. But, their wardrobe was just basic, classic pieces. They ate a rather plain, ordinary diet and watched their portions. They walked for exercise. Their biggest indulgences were books and the theatre. What we can learn from both time periods is that it's important to work on our inner selves and our self worth. Then, hopefully, self-discipline and modesty around money will follow.

Today on another channel I heard the saying "Rich is loud, wealthy is silent." Made a lot of sense!

I grew up in a pretty “wealthy” home, and my friends always called my family rich just because our house was nice but being honest, My parents just knew how to spend wisely, save money, and cut back on a lot of things to be able to have nicer things that were more important. They were wealthy without having “rich” jobs, if that makes sense. I’m so happy they thought me to be wise with money because a lot of people don’t realize it’s not about income but how humble and smart you are about it.

THE POINT IS, you can have all those stuffs just don’t brag about it by taking pictures of it and then post it to social media. Right

I am far from rich but I have just moved to a western european country from eastern europe which meant a large increase in my income and lifestlye. After living in Austria for 6 months I wanted to purchase that gucci bag so bad.. but then I thought I should not spend anything I saved up as soon as I became rich compated to myself. So I took the price of that gucci bag, bought a michael kors bag (not the polyester ones with disgusting logos, i purchased a truly elegant and sophisticates tote with very very small logo and soft leather), and invested the rest in secure ETFs and a Master Degree Programm. I used to be poor and wanted to compete with those insta girls back then. I used to think I will go back to the East with that LV monogram bag and go to that fancy snobbish club, now I feel I never ever want to belong those circle. Looking forward to this video 😊

Recently I worked in a very wealthy household with some house guests.. One of the gentlemen there was very quiet, unassuming and polite. He was friendly but not too friendly and always considerate. On the day he left he came to my room and gave me a large tip for going out of my way to be kind and helpful to his family and told me I was a beautiful person. After he left I found out he was a 'Prince' from one of the oldest families in Europe. I've met lots of royalty and old money.. they've been some of the most respectful people I've worked for. I've also worked for VERY wealthy new money and the contrast was stark.

Money just multiplies who you already are. If you are poor and humble, you'll be rich and humble. If you're poor and ostentatious, you'll be rich and ostentatious. It's not the money that makes some of the nouveau riche so crass, it's that they already were, their new money just took it to another level🤷🏾‍♀️

​​Yes, all that excessive photography and posting in social media of luxury items screams tacky! Elegance is an inner attitude, not necessarily associated with things, no matter how expensive they are.

Being private, calm, and classy is priceless. Regardless of your social class or job, if you conduct yourself elegantly then you tend to be well received.

Be classy. Do not flaunt your wealth. Social media has created chaos amongst the young, but with age comes wisdom. Thank you for your guidance.

I agree about the Birkin, it was “old money” years ago. Today it is quite nouveau riche, still elegant but not understated. I believe it will lose status amongst the high society in 5-10 years. it will be seen on fashionistas and influencers more than on affluent ladies who will find something less flashy and common.

As someone who came from the literal ghetto, on food stamps and government assistance and now I’m considered “high income” it’s to easy to slip up and do some of these things. I definitely recorded bottle service in the club last night 😭 but I’m growing up and getting there

Totally agree! As my grandparents say: “Buying expensive stuff that loses value like cars, clothes,.. are the ones where you only look for quality, not status.”

I'm currently 'no money' but I was brought up to be respectful of people and have confidence in my own self-worth, and to value everything I work to own. Showing off and disrespecting people is crass at any income bracket.

The best tip anyone ever gave me was to find a good seamstress. However much you pay for a garment it will look cheap if it does not fit properly. So even if you save money on the garment pay a little extra to have it tailored. It will not cost much. I got married in my Mum's dress. The seamstress changed and tailored it for me which cost a fraction of buying a new dress and the old one had lace that you just cannot buy anymore. It was unique.

Many of the "social media new rich" aren't wealthy at all, rather, they're in debt up to their eyeballs. They may take selfies with all sorts of luxury goods, but 10 minutes later they might be returning them to the shop. True wealth, old money, does not need to advertise that they have money.

I saw on another video this concept that “Money talks, wealth whispers” and that has changed my perspective significantly.

This reminds me of a passage from the Book of Phillipians 2: 33 Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. 4 Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too. You can tell a lot about people by how they treat others, and money does not necessarily make you a decent human being, in fact, in my experience “new money”people are quite self absorbed and narcissistic.

I grew up dirt poor. Many times there was no food to eat. Now I’ve acquired some wealth through my hard work. I like nice things and I buy what I want if I want. I keep a small circle and I’m not the type to show off. At the end of the day I made my money no one pays my bills but me so I can care less what others think.

Being too flashy in certain places definitely makes you a target to get robbed!

I'm not used to share much of my life in social media, I find it so unnecessary since I'm 20. I found out that I enjoyed much of my life in private I really recommend it

What I take from this is that money doesn't buy class. Another way of putting it is "confidence is quiet". You don't have to go shouting about what you already are confident about.

*Money does not define any human being* I think the sentiment is beautiful. However, the reality is slightly different. We all know one is treated in a different way just because they come across as wealthy.

I once went on a date with a guy, who had much more $ than me. He was super rude to the waitstaff, I never even ordered. I excused myself, found d the waiter, tipped them and said that guy was trash, and left. Period

"New money"and "Old money" Do not reside in the same world! "Old money" (inherited) looks down on "New money "(not inherited) and never the twain shall meet! I have worked for wealthy people and I discovered they have many of the same problems that everyone else has... failed multiple marriages, lost of large amounts of money children on drugs and in jail, illegitimate kids I could go on and on! They just have highly paid attorneys to bail them out!

I read a lot about the lives of the old moneyed. Discretion is the #1 cornerstone of their culture. #2 being politeness in any and all situations.

A+ for the advice of treating people with true respect and empathy. 😊👏🏻. When I was 9 years my father bought an airplane that could accommodate our family... none of my friends at school had airplanes... so I've heard things and saw facial expressions that taught me be more reserved and "low profile". Besides, you have to be ready because money sometimes don't last... 1 one night stock can go to zero. Focus on your internal strength and knowledge because they can last forever.

I rather be a minimalist. Have quality vs quantity. Spend money on classic pieces for my wardrobe, buy excellent quality food, good books and travel extensively. Stay on fantastic hotels, etc. I don't need to walk around with labeled purses nor shoes. I find that very tacky.

So true. My parents were "New Money". but very understated. I grew up in an old money neighborhood and went to old money private education. As a young adult I was forever amused by hearing typical New Money people believed they made it in to the Old Money club. Nope. You made it to a money club but that is all. Two different worlds! You are awesome!

Thank you for addressing how service staff are to be treated. Sadly, during this pandemic I have seen cashiers screamed at, spit on and items thrown at them. I know of a store General Manager having been punched in the face. I know of Pharmacists that have been beaten. This incredibly poor behaviour is never acceptable, but seems to be more prevalent across all social economic levels. I have always felt that how you treat others is really more important than so many other aspects of life, and it has been such a clear indicator of whom I would like to include in my life.

I started buying luxury things secondhand. Not only am I saving a ton of money but I am also spending less on a higher quality item than I would if I just bought something at say Forever 21 or H&M. I got a near brand new Coach bag at the Goodwill last week for $10. All I had to do was clean it and the bag looked pristine.

I was in the same class with these two brothers who always dressed modestly, like nothing flashy ab them at all. They're also polite and funny, and we were great friends. I also grew up in a middle-upper class kinda family and personally met and were friends with many rich flashy kids. That's why I had very different perception on how being rich looked like. I didn't even think ab the possibility that they could be rich, I thought they're just normal middle-upper class like me (the school we went to had pretty high tuition fees so most families needed to be somewhat middle-upper class so I just assumed). One day, I saw the dad of these two brothers came to get them at school and he drove a very fancy Mercedes. This was 15 years ago so not many people I knew owned that brand. I started to notice them more, and I realised those modest polos they often wore were from Burberry. Apparently they're good quality so their mum bought them and they just wore whatever was given. They were so different from my other rich friends.

Yes we had money ,the house had damp the stair carpets were threadbare, The kitchen cupboard doors were all falling off. It was freezing unless you sat on a fire , But we ate from the garden every day ,we wore lots of jumpers to keep warm , We helped people especially staff who were old ,who still stayed on . We didn't go away much , We bought British only ,we mended ,we recycled, we walked places . Never rude always greatful

Very well explained. I think it boils down to understanding your privilege, as a wealthy person, and not wanting to make others feel inferior, uncomfortable or awkward because they don't have that wealth, whether in person or on your instagram. That is showing good manners. That is elegance.

There’s an Ancient Greek saying «μέτρον άριστον» that basically means to do everything in moderation ; honestly it’s the most wise and applicable quote I’ve ever heard ! I really appreciate you pointing out that we have to always find that balance Anna !

In Mexico we have an old saying that comes from France about this subject and says "Nobleza obliga" (Noblesse oblige, Nobility obliges) and means the most fortunate and privileged (not only wealthy people) must have an honorable and classy demeanor because with privilege comes responsibilities.

My mother always tells me to enjoy everything. Get the best thing you can afford but don't show off. Never put your wealth on display. It's tacky plus evil eye is a real thing.

I grew up with parents who probably aren't the best at saving money. I've grown up in council house and wasn't given the best life but I am grateful. My mum did the best she could as a single mum of us 3 children and we always had nice things as children. I still live with my mum as I'm only nearly 18 years old. Now as a young adult istead of spending loads on accessories, bags and clothing that you've pointed out I spend money on things that I need, that aren't overly expensive not excess spending or to "prove a point" to people. I'm a lot more clever with money and smart with it than being aloud with it. Instead of spending £100s on branded material I still dress nicely on a lower budget so I can save up for other things, such as my driving licence this year🥰

I always felt bad when I saw new money having fun and enjoying life, some kind of unwanted and uncomfortable enviousness take me, but a video like this brings back me to reality, rationally explaining the situation... It calms me down knowing that I am not the only one who looks at this kind of lifestyle with a suspicious eye, THANK YOU ✨

I'm from Brazil, and I'm poor in the Brazilian reality. That is, I do not belong to the reality you speak about. But your idea about the best way to live in a rich world is very interesting: I can see simplicity and sophistication together. From the clothes and makeup to the way you gesture and speak. It makes me want to keep watching your videos even if the context doesn't apply to me.

I like both. I believe new money takes more risks and are more interesting to look at but they have a tendency to look gaudy, such as wearing head to toe brand monograms. On the other hand, old money are classicly elegant but tend to be boring and aging. Think Chanel tweed suits, I love them but it ages young people that's why Lagerfeld changed the design in the 90's to appeal to younger people. Having a good balance is best and I feel like Kate Middleton embodies this best.

I have never liked showing off, wearing everything that's trendy. We were always on the poor side but people always thought that I came from a well off family. I saved and bought items that were classy and I can't say it is something I was taught by my parents of any family members. I often think it was something in my DNA. Maybe my ancestors were wealthy. Some people are born naturally drawn to elegance. You give the best advice Anna. I especially like that you remind us that being polite and we'll mannered is also a part of being elegant.

I had worked in the service industry for a few years. I will tell you this, I always knew who actually had money and who was just showing off. And yes, they were treated differently.

I'm so glad my grandmother taught me proper dining etiquette. That was her exact phrase: "dining with the Queen." Now, teaching my own children has proven to be quite the task! I am hoping by the time they are 10 or so they finally get it. 😮‍💨 I appreciate your channel. When I listen to you it makes me even more grateful for the way I was raised. My family taught me it is all about how wise you are with your money. Elegance doesn't come with money. Education, sustainability, compassion and looking after yourself and the planet is much more important than materialistic things. Caring for yourself and others draws me to people more than wealth ever will. It's the person inside that shows, you can't hide that with expensive jewellery, clothes and cars.

The wealthy old money people I’m aware of go to greater lengths to hide their wealth and avoid being flashy at all costs due to security/safety reasons. I absolutely agree about the attitude. The people with generational wealth I’ve met probably have more in common with the working class in some ways than new money. They respect people regardless of social status and appreciate hard work.

Interestingly, many of the most wealthy people I know never show it. They seem like any average household. Infact, if you didn't know them, you would never know how wealthy they really are.

From working around people of many levels of wealth I've seen its rarely ever flashy unless a situation calls for frivolity, like the Kentucky Derby for instance. Subdued, classic, even way under the radar. The money is invested and working for them, not their wardrobe! And they usually invest the spendable amounts in expensive hobbies or leisure pursuits like race horses, horse riding, exclusive golf/clubs, ect. Where you actually have to be sponsored in order to join. So, enjoy new money ( but please do it elegantly🙂) , it's yours after all but the old money are circles that are hard to enter.

Hi Anna, I used to work as an au pair for a very wealthy family. Their wealth has come from generations in the past. What was interesting to me they had no interests in LV, Chanel, Rolex etc or showing off their wealth. Yes, they had expensive things but with no logos on it. They spent a fortune on food (being honest I have never looked any better in those times I guess because of incredible quality of food I had opportunity to eat), antiques (expensive pianos etc), and relaxations (like having the newest generation saunas at home). However, the most important was for them the time with family. Personally I felt really appreciated by them and they believed and encouraged me to apply for study that I did not believe I would get into it. A few years later I am where I am and I am grateful for every day of my life. I also would like to add I really enjoy your videos, mainly the way how you present the content.

Anna, I am happy that there is something like this online for people. When I was small, there were bonton schools, and books where people could find all necessary information on how to behave, dress politely, talk politely, behave around the table... What I am surprised with, is how many people don't know these simple rules.Because in my childhood I heard all of this from my grandmother. What would be very interesting is to explain, and teach people, women in this case what to read, and to be on a spot with high society topics. Because qualitative education and to know how to use that in practical occasions is very important.

Dear Anna, you are a great inspiration and it amazes me how wise, mature you are. I feel like someone from the royal family is teaching us. I think watching these people (new money people) on social media is very toxic and it won't bring anything of value to a person. The less they have in their heads and hearts, the more they have to have logos, symbols ... so that no one will notice their emptiness. Of course there are exceptions. Greatings from Prague! :-)

I love this video. I'm not the most elegant but I can always learn and listen. This is an honest list. I giggled a little bit at #5. That's usually the, "if you don't have stamps all over your passport, we cant relate" crowd. They're always so classist relating to travel. Some of us have family to take care of or other financial demands. I love travel but I would never look down on someone because they cant regularly. I had a man chide me about not having been to many places. It was one of the weirdest bar convos I ever had. He approached me to reprimand me.

Thank you, Anna and to the other commenters who gave good tips. I'm not wealthy at all, nor do I have a large income but people always assume that I'm rich because of my mannerisms such as being neat, polite to others and even miniscule things such as putting chairs back after using them.

As long as it doesn’t include my car 🙏🏾, please as an independent woman I worked hard and hustled for my luxury car lol. I am considered new money. I can be materialistic but I refuse to pay for a damn Birkin Bag. Lol.
