It's that time -- First Solo. This is when you solo an airplane after going through your initial flight training toward a private pilot license. Annalynn has been flying a lot, and as her CFI I've been giving her flight lessons to prepare her for this day. Truly this is a big day in her aviation journey.
She really loves flying. We started flying when she was 16, during her discovery flight. Her family bought an airplane so they could learn to fly. And her and I went after the flight training hard this summer. Aviation booms in Alaska in the summer, and we had to take advantage of the good weather. And the big day has finally come!
Traditionally, the flight instructor (CFI) goes up for a few laps around the traffic pattern to make sure the student pilot is in the good head space. In this case, Annalynn and I did a few touch and goes in her Cessna 152. Then, verifying what I already knew, I jumped out of the airplane (on the ground of course) and she went for a rip!
Each landing and takeoff was fantastic. You could tell she was flying the aircraft well and had control the whole time. Even confidence I would say. And this IS a huge confidence builder, doing this first solo. From here, really, the aviation journey accelerates with all of that energy and confidence. The end of the private pilot training goes very quickly.
Annalynn ended up doing 3 takeoffs and 3 landings in the Cessna 152. We all celebrated when she got back, and I 'cut her tail feathers'. Lots of people ask about that tradition. In the olden days of aviation and flight training, the CFI sat behind the student in a tandem aircraft. They'd tug on the shirt of the student to convey certain messages, like turn this way, or listen up. By cutting the feathers, it signifies that the CFI no longer needs to give those instructions to the student pilot.
Of course there are still many things that the student pilot needs to learn during flight training, but the first solo is still a huge day in their aviation journey.

Solo'd in 2007, was actually in a C152. Actually the n was 76J, when she said 67L it reminded me of my first solo. I was so scared.

Congratulations Annalynn! I am a retired United Airlines Captain. From the date on this video post it looks like you soloed the same month that I retired, October 2020. My first solo was in 1977 in a Piper Cherokee 140. I remember feeling the exact same way you looked in the video! Awesome! I finished all my training and began professional flying in 1980. 40 years later, 22,000 hours, Corporate, Regional and Major Airlines, what a blast! I had the great privilege to fly all over the world with United Airlines. Started in the B-727, then off to 737, 757, 767, 777, and B-747-400, and one non-Boeing tour in the DC-10 for three years. When I taxied in from that first solo, parked and shook my Flight Instructor's hand I was still emotionally floating back up in that traffic pattern and couldn't wait to get back up there. I had no idea what a fantastic flying career was ahead of me, but I hoped. And now I hope for you, that your journey will fulfill every flying desire in your heart! Go get it girl!

What a great reply and a great career! And CONGRATS young lady! Have a blast with whatever you end up doing in life. I got my commercial license in the 70’s but ended up becoming an air traffic controller instead! What a kick. And so was my solo . . . some (gag) 40+ yrs. ago! (The olden days with no cell phones/pictures or video for posterity. Well . . . if you packed around a huge camcorder . . .) Anyways, Congrats again 😀

Hello, from England, I also soloed in 1977 in a cherokee 140 and went on to fly for the next 40 years too, I also did 73, 75,76, and 74-2 with a short stay on a bus. its great to watch u do what we all did at one time or another,,,, have fun and stay safe,. wish u blue skys :)

@@valkori_ytb I think Noah's comment was missing a some potential tonal/speech markers to indicate it was a metaphor. It's like people saying 'you are a [young person noun] before, but after, you are a [adult person noun]. I don't think they literally meant you land as a Legal Pilot.

Technically a student pilot when solo is still a student pilot. BUT, also technically called PIC (Pilot in command) when flying solo, student pilot or not. Confused yet? lol

I'll NEVER, EVER forget my solo. It was INCREDIBLE! I had no idea I was going to solo that day. After my instructor got out, my knees were literally knocking! By the time I took off, there was too much to concentrate on. Knees stopped knoking and and did great! Coingratulations Annalynn! You did great!!!

I knew I was going to solo the day before, I was scared shitless too and couldn’t sleep that night😂 afraid I’d get up there and panic but like you said, there’s just too much to concentrate on and you don’t have time to be scared. Definitely something to remember.

It was fantastic! I buckled up the passenger side seat belt. Pretend my mom was with me. Because she would be very excited to see me solo. She passed away when I was 13. I solo when I was 17. It was something was put into my heart. Great to see people moving forward with great spirits!

The first time you fly an airplane alone is ... magical. It's exhilarating, then scary, but then your training kicks in and you just do what you learned to do. What a great experience!

I remember my instructor getting out of the plane, telling me to stay put, told me I was flying solo then he got his briefcase out of the back and said "I better take this in case you crash and burn so I don't lose all my students info". that was over 40 years ago.

To solo for the first time and realize there is no one there to help you but God, gives whole new meaning to a pass fail test. Annalynn did very well. I felt the same way in 1979 and every landing since.

Hey Guys. You never forget your 1st solo. Mine was at Southend on Sea (SEND) in the UK. GB-IOC Cessna 152. It was late afternoon in the autumn. After Andy got out and closed the door, I looked over the now huge empty cockpit and taxied out to runway 24. As Southend was a very busy commercial airport, ATC was always gruff and barely tolerant of us fledgling pilots. As the wheels left the runway, I remember feeling so excited. It was getting darker and as I radioed in calling down wind. ATC replied, I think this may help Oscar Charlie, and turned on the runway lights! I can’t to this day explain the feeling, what an overwhelming sight! Southend is a large airfield and I had a long time to enjoy this magical moment. As I cleared the runway, ATC added, nice one Oscar Charlie. I was grinning from ear to ear!

30 years ago my instructor, after a couple of circuits, simply said "Ok take me back to the hangar". It was a small airfield with only one hangar. As I prepared to shut the aircraft down he said "Dont do that, I'm going to the clubhouse for a cup of tea, go and do one more circuit then join me". And he just got out! Before he closed the door he added I should do my checks... So I did, taxied to the end of the runway, lined up, rechecked everything, and then did what I've seen many more students do at that point. Takes about 5 seconds and we all sit there and think - am I really going to do this? Then the training takes over and we go. I remember so clearly to this day, the joy of flying an aircraft by myself.

This is almost exactly like my first solo. My dad was my instructor and we were in the same 1946 t craft that he learned of from his dad. Didn’t know I was going to solo that day, he just got out and said do it again. I remember waiting to take off thinking oh my god I can’t believe I’m about to do it! I’ll never forget it

I sat in my office and cheered Annalynn on as if I was there standing right there on the tarmac. Brought back memories of my first solo in June 1990 in LEX.... in a very similar looking C-152. Literally brought tears to my eyes to see her excitement, enthusiasm and confidence. Well done Annalynn and blessings for a long and safe flying career !

After about 10 hours of flight time in a Cessna 152 (tail number 65552) with instructor Fred Lorenz out of the Edwards AFB Aero Club, we were doing routine pattern work. After about 3 landings, he surprised me when he had me stop on the runway, got out, and said simply to give him three takeoffs and landings. When he got out of the plane, the feeling was simultaneously sheer elation and sheer terror. My first impression on takeoff was that the airplane climbed like a rocket because 240 pound Fred wan no longer on board. Those first three solo takeoffs and landings were the best ever. When I completed them, I got the plane on the ground and got out, but I couldn't walk on the ground because I was walking on air for hours afterwards. That solo was the most amazing and life-changing experience because I finally truly understood what John Gillespie McGee, Jr. wrote about in his poem "High Flight" and what Leonardi de Vince meant when he said "Once you have flown, you look at everything differently". Everybody should have that experience.

This video changed my life. I've watched several videos where students are soloing their first time. I found them extremely exciting and enjoyable. I always thought that flying would be something I wouldn't be capable of so I guess I just dismissed it automatically. Then after watching your video I decided to make the dream come true for myself. I took my first flight lesson on March 14th, passed my FAA exam in late April and soloed in late May. Now my focus is on wrapping up preparations for my check ride. Thanks so much for sharing your experience with us. It was the inspiration I needed to turn a lifelong dream into reality.

First soloed in 1983. Can remember that feeling on downwind OMG that right seat next to me is EMPTY. After three seconds of panic, settled down and concentrated on the three circuits and landings ahead. Most glorious moment in my life, even after all those years.

You don’t know how much you helped me prepare for this !!!’ I’m a student Pilot with about 10 hours and had not flown since 2017 and this month I took out some retirement money to finish. My daughter is 12 yrs old and will be taking her introductory flight this Saturday. She lights up every time she talks about flying and knows she wants to be a pilot. She watched your solo and hasn't stopped smiling since. Awesome job and thank you for sharing!

Please continue to support your daughter in pursuing aviation, I took ground School when I was 18 but it took me 20 years to come full circle and get back into flying. Also check out your local EAA chapter cuz there's always pilots that love to get young people involved and I believe there's a program called the Young eagles where they actually take kids up frequently when they have their weekend events.

i remember my first solo flight, it was a couple of months ago now, and i loved it. it was such a huge shock because my flight instructor gave me no warning on when my first solo flight might be, and one day i touched down and he said pull onto the grass. and then got out and said youre going solo. then he prerry much shut the door and left me to my devices. It's crzy to think i cant even drive yet but here i am , flying planes all over the place. Nice work Annalynn, and enjoy your life in aviation

Private Pilot and A&P mechanic here, So Watching her SOLO I caught myself exhaling at the same moments and that heavy focus breath where were completely in the zone on our task. I remember every bit of that day and it was exciting to see her do the same. Time to cut that shirt!

This brings back too many memories I did my solo in 1979 in a 150. After working in aviation for 38 years I am no longer able to fly myself but that is an experience she will never forget.

My solo was 20 years ago, didn't know I was going to, my instructor says "I'm getting out, go make 3 full stop landings, see you when you get back". I will never forget it!! She did a great job!! Great instructor!

I have to admit that I’m 61 years old and just about shed a tear for Annalynn. It’s clear that she’s comfortable at the controls and that’s a testament to her instructor and not rushing to solo! I was pushed to solo asap by a very good instructor who thought it would be a confidence booster and kicked me out at 7 hours. It did give me confidence but I also didn’t know what I didn’t know. I remember thinking that I hoped my dad was proud and he was but I wish I could have had him teach me, he was a Mustang pilot in WWII. It wasn’t until after he passed away that I got to fly the T-6 and the Mustang and my respect for those young men grew exponentially. It gave me the desire to fly more and I ended up loving aerobatics enough that I bought a Pitts before getting my tail wheel endorsement. Flying tail draggers improved my landings in conventional gear planes but I don’t see it helping Annalynn much! Good job young lady!!!! Thanks for sharing this video!!!

It WAS really great to see her so comfortable with the plane! I got booted out at around 8 hrs. but that was tons of yrs. ago at Embry Riddle Aero. Univ. and then EVERYBODY was soloing with under 10. I was shocked to hear she was working on it for so long but I think it’s wise as she’s younger, parents own the plane so they obviously can afford the instruction and in the long run, what’s the rush? Practice makes perfect!

i just had my first proper lesson today, literally this morning and all be it in a flexwing microlight it was still absolutely the best feeling ever. being in the front seat for the first time with unobstructed view, at points i forgot my instructor was behind me and i just felt free. now i have been dreading my first solo when i get to that point as i have very low self confidence however videos like this no matter how long ago they was posted as they always convey the same message. Never doubt your ability to do something especially if the person teaching you is confident enough to let you do it yourself. it is this one thing that is getting me over the thought of going solo, my instructor wont let me go for it if he doesnt think i can do it. i truelly cannot wait to finally experience what every pilot you ask says, "you never forget your first solo". flying is my dream and the only thing that currently matters in my life and always has done and i am so looking forward to the beauty and freedom it brings

May be among the oldest "soloists" here, as my solo happened at age 18 in 1958. Yep, I am 82 now, but still remember the thrill when my instructor climbed out of the front seat of the Piper J3 Cub and said, "It's yours". I was working at the Melbourne (Fl) FBO as a line-boy - taking part of my pay in flying lessons. My instructor was a one-eyed young fella who had special clearance to instruct - can't remember his name right now - and I shall never forget the anticipation I felt (along with a smidgeon of fear) when I realized that I would not be seeing his back, but would be actually looking out the front of the aircraft.

You have me by 5 years. I flew solo in a C150 my senior year in high school. I went on a a CFII and air charter. I only worked at it half time. The other half was as a science teacher.

Wow! Just watched and congratulations, Annalynn! I’m 64 now but soloed at 16 and still remember it like yesterday. I’m sure you will as well. I was what they say a ‘quick study’, plus I was so obsessed I had read everything I could get my hands on ( 0:17 😮this was the 70’s, no internet!), so I soloed at 8hrs. I didn’t know it would be solo day. I just thought it was an hour of pattern work. After a few landings my instructor told me to taxi to the FBO and let him out. I was nervous but so busy not wanting to screw up it was focus over nervousness. I remember vividly on downwind, with a minute to reflect and looking at that empty right seat, what I was doing. It’s probably still the biggest thrill I’ve had in my entire life. And I still remember how that little Cessna 150 would get up and go with only my scrawny 150lbs of weight! Wish it was still that way!

My first solo was in a Tiger Moth, in the summer of '71, on a grass strip just outside London. Sundown; not a breath of air. Came back down light as a feather and the instructor was well pleased. Then a bunch of us went to the pub to celebrate. One of the best days of my life. I was 24.

I am a 53 year old man who had his first solo at 20 and can see my nerves in this young lady but not enough to interfere. I wasn't able to achieve my commercial license due to my eye sight and after 33 years i am going back this year to fulfill my dream of getting back up solo and owning my own airplane. Wish me luck!

I started training in 2000 at 20 yrs old. Unfortunately life happens and money runs out..I was never able to solo. I decided to do whatever I needed to do to finish getting my private this year in 2023 at 43 yrs old. I have nothing but the desire and determination at this point, but I’m trusting the Lord to make a way! Spectacular video and congrats to Annalyn!!! Amazing job!!

Well done Lady. I remember my 1st Solo well. That first time round takes about 10 mins and in that time you go through just about every emotion. Trepidation as you taxi out to the runway, concentration as you climb away, relief and relaxation on the down wind, concern and more concentration on finals, hope and fear over the threshold, excitement and pure joy on the touch down. Congratulations! My solo was many many years ago and I still remember it like it was yesterday! I was lucky enough to solo on my birthday and it was by far the best birthday I have ever had. Feeling the airplane jump off the runway without my instructor who happened to be my father I felt the first jolt of excitement. Then as I turned base leg seeing him on the tarmac watching. I greased that first landing and my confidence soared. He finally called me back to pick him up because it was in December and he was freezing on the flight line!

I soloed in 1978, in a 152, at Frederick, MD. A wonderful, exciting flight that led to a lifetime of incredible memories. Flying on magical winter nights, with the air fat with lift. No sky, no horizon, no ground…just black velvet dotted with random pinpoints of light that are stars and towns. Runways magically emerging from low clouds. St Elmos fire dancing around propeller tips. Landings on grass so smoothly that you have to look over to see if the wheels are rolling. Dancing around golden cumulus puffs at sunset while the ground below is enveloped with dusk. My toddler son laughing and clapping and shouting with joy at the water splashes on his window during an amphibious landing.

My first solo was back in June, I shouted of joy in downwind, then in July i had a mayday landing due to engine loss of power, landed on a dirt field near the city, zero damages and zero injuries, shouted again for being alive! And liked aviation even more! Working on my CPL.

My first solo was 50 years ago this month in a 150. Had no idea I would be soloing that day. Finished my lesson and after we stopped my instructor got out and said something like "Okay take it around." I said "Around where?" He said "Around the pattern." I distinctly remember saying "What! Now?! Alone?!" "Yep." One of the highlights of my life. Loved watching this video.

My first solo was at Jacksonville NAS. After a few times around the pattern, my instructor told me to taxi back to the hanger because he had to go to the bathroom. He got out, turned around and said to go around the pattern 3 times then come back and get me and don’t break my plane! I didn’t break the plane!

Love this video! I did my solo a month ago, and and a couple flights away from my checkride. You seem exactly like I was, all excited, then down to business when it mattered, then excited again. Was euphoric the rest of the day, couldn’t wait to go back up the next morning! Hope your training has gone well and you’re still just as excited about it!

My instructor was 230 lbs and, when he got out of the Cessna 150 I was training in, it was like flying a different airplane! It really did take off "like a rocket" I had to work to get it back down. My most vivid memory was "well... it's now up to ONLY me to get this thing back on the ground." This was really a great video to watch. Congratulations on your first solo anniversary Annalynn!

Awesome Christopher! I'll be 50 soon and I first started my training when I was 23. Had to also put it on "pause" for about 20 years to raise some kids but started back up and completed all my training about 6 years ago. One of the best decisions I've ever made was to get back to training. I'm much older, wiser and financially able now than I was when I was in my early twenties which makes flying so much more fun. Best of luck to you and I'm sure you'll do great!

I'm in my early 60s and thinking the same thing, I have a private glider license but never finished my power after 60 hours and close to 200 hours in sailplanes, if I never did anything but touch and goes that would be enough, nothing like shooting landings.

Congratulations! This video brought back lots of memories. I remember my first solo, my instructor told me to taxi to the tower and got out and didn’t tell me that he was going to solo me. I don’t remember having such a thrill. I was 22 years old at the time. I’m 63 now. I did continue flying became a flight instructor, a commercial pilot, until eventually I got my ATP. I retired early. The best of luck to you and always fly safe.

Iam not a pilot but my dad had a small plane when I was a kid in the 60's, he passed away in 1974. Recently I found his first log book and found when he soloed in 1957. The N number showed up as a Taylorcraft BC12d tail dragger and it was in the Evergreen air museum in Hood River Oregon. I went to the museum and sure enough there was the plane. One of the caretakeres of the museum took a pic of the log book....he said quite a few others have done the same thing. Congrats on you solo Annalynn....great job....V1 Rotate........

This video brought me back to my first solo some 30+ years ago (1991 or so). So long ago, but I can still remember it like it was yesterday. Cessna 150, county airport, uncontrolled FBO. And her experience played out almost exactly as mine did. My instructor did 3 touch-n-go's with me to make sure I was on top of things that day. Then I dropped him off and he let me do my three solo landings. It's hard to describe to people the mixture of excitement and apprehension with your first solo. Once your gear lifts off from the ground and you start climbing, that is when reality really sits in. You realize that putting the aircraft back onto the runway safely is all on you. You immediately become a little sweaty... hence the long tradition of cutting the back out of your solo shirt. And my three solos went about like Annalynn's. The very first landing was a little rough, but then the next two I settled in and had some much smoother landings. Like I said, I think that very first landing, you have so much adrenaline pumping through you, and your mind is almost over thinking everything you are doing... even though your instructor should have already instilled most of the visual memory and muscle memory that you need. Oh, and speaking of the solo shirt, it felt good to see that the cutting of the shirt tradition is still happening all of these years later. I still have the rest of my solo shirt, minus the missing back, that I have kept as a keepsake all of these years later. Congratulations, Annalynn. And welcome to the club.

I dont even remember the first 30 seconds of my first solo, I was so nervous! :D I gess happened the same with you guys but my instructor didn't tell me that my first solo gonna happen right now, he just said after a check round that "OK drop me out in the front of the tower and you go alone, be nice!" Never forget!

Same here. Towards the end of the lesson he hopped out and told me to do one circuit and land. Very nervous, but told myself he wouldn’t have got out if he wasn’t confident of getting the plane back in one piece! So proud when I landed!

Seems to be par for the course. They’ll never tell you and just get out and say “ take it around for one circuit and full stop”. That’s how it happened for me. I also reminded him to stay clear of the propeller as he deplaned. It was easy and didn’t actually dawn on me until on the downwind leg that it was the first time I’d ever been alone in a plane at height. Slightly weird feeling and then there’s things to do and the training takes over.

Oh boy, some instructors are like that. On my first circuit I made a really hard landing after a balloon and the instructor looked to me super pissed off, it was a super uncomfortable lesson. Although I’ve had 2 flights with him since and it’s a lot better since I’m a lot better at flying but yeah when I do, do something wrong he does raise his voice, which doesn’t really get to me but it might really damage students confidence having someone who mainly points out what they did wrong and mad about it.

Military flight instructors are nervous in the service and scream and holler and take controls away from students all the time. One or two mistakes, unless it's a woman or minority student, and the student will fail and the instructor will prevail. 🤑🤢🤮🤓🧐

My first instructor was a Korean era combat pilot, Charlie. A little guy, mean as they come and nothing was right, so I moved to another airport, ran into Barb, she was as opposite of Charlie as one could get, patient and provided information and feedback as needed. Then she moved out of state and Mark came along. Great guy, was fun to fly with.

I had those same small out loud talks to myself on my first solo and continue to do it even with my private. Glad to see her enthusiasm for aviation! Also, my first solo was planned, but it was still awesome. I was able to have my family and friends there to watch and it was awesome. All of my landings were pure BUHUTTER even though my heart about flew out of my chest. It was the perfect day and I'll always remember it.

1993 was my first solo. Turned downwind (after what seemed like cross country to even pass the departure end of the runway) and that’s when I noticed the seatbelt laying across the right seat. What a feeling! It was really happening! Don’t fly anymore but I did go on to earn my multi, commercial, and instrument ratings. This video brought tears to my eyes! Congrats Annalynn! You made my day.

@@GregFliesVR I was to and dont know why but i was really happy for her and she did a great job. I am a student pilot and only about 5 hrs away from doing my first solo flight and i cant wait.

My 17 year old daughter soloed 3 weeks ago on a very cold morning in Rochester MN. It was a day I will never forget. I knew her flight instructor had trained her well. However, as a parent, I had big butterflies as she taxied and took off. Incredible to watch her go!! Congratulations Annalynn!

Had my first flight lesson yesterday, and what an experience. I am looking forward to being able to fly solo, and I'm sure watching everyone else's experiences will be immensely beneficial. Thanks
