ANNE BANCROFT (born Anna Maria Louisa Italiano; 1931 - 2005) was an American actress, director, screenwriter and singer. Respected for her acting prowess and versatility, Bancroft received an Academy Award, three BAFTA Awards, two Golden Globe Awards, two Tony Awards, and two Primetime Emmy Awards. She is one of only 24 thespians to achieve the Triple Crown of Acting.
Associated with the method acting technique, having studied under Lee Strasberg at the Actors Studio, Bancroft made her film debut in the noir thriller Don't Bother to Knock (1952). Following a string of repetitive and glamorous supporting roles, her film career took a toll with executives reluctant to cast her in prestige roles. In 1958 Bancroft made her Broadway debut with the play Two for the Seesaw, winning the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play. The following year she portrayed Anne Sullivan in the original Broadway production of The Miracle Worker, winning the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play. Following her continued success on stage, Bancroft's film career was revived when she was cast in the acclaimed film adaptation of The Miracle Worker (1962) for which she won the Academy Award for Best Actress. Her film career further progressed with Oscar nominated performances in The Pumpkin Eater (1964), The Graduate (1967), The Turning Point (1977), and Agnes of God (1985). Bancroft continued to act in the latter half of her life, with prominent roles in The Elephant Man (1980), Garbo Talks (1984), To Be or Not to Be (1983), 84 Charing Cross Road (1987), Torch Song Trilogy (1988), Home for the Holidays (1995), Dracula: Dead and Loving It (1995), G.I. Jane (1997), and Great Expectations (1998). She received multiple Primetime Emmy Award nominations, including for the television films Broadway Bound (1992), Deep in My Heart (1999), for which she won, and The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone (2003). Bancroft died on June 6, 2005, at the age of 73, following her battle with uterine cancer. She was married to actor and comedian Mel Brooks, with whom she had a son named Max.
The Charlie Rose Show (PBS/1991-2017) is an American television interview and talk show, with Charlie Rose as executive producer, executive editor, and host. The show was syndicated on PBS until 2017 and is owned by Charlie Rose, Inc. Rose interviewed thinkers, writers, politicians, athletes, entertainers, businesspersons, leaders, scientists, and fellow newsmakers.

@@lauralutz4538 I'd say it is impossible to know truly even the closest people we encounter, let alone the cosmos which is an individual, and presumably "knowing them" depends upon them speaking, because it's speech which permits psychological revelation. But then we can encounter someone through written language, and clearly encountering Anne Bancroft is a raindrop in a river compared with Shakespeare, or William Blake, or Emily Dickinson.

Seems "underrated" is a new favorite word whether true or NOT about some noteworthies nowadays. There are so many accurate, true, interesting, informative things to say about others that are relevant with some kind of meaning.

Anne Bancroft (Annie as I affectionately call her) absolutely has my heart! I adore her and I adore this interview. The reason I love her so much is because she was strong, bawdy, gentle, compassionate, and tender. She wasn't like the ditzy Marilyn Monroe types (don't get me wrong I love MM) but she had gumption and grit, and she was gentle. There's something special about Anne Bancroft. Miss you, Annie! Thank you for leaving us with so much beautiful work.

Anne was one of the most UNDERRATED actresses of all-time. She had it all, just don't understand. Why she didn't control the acting community is a very huge question. Maybe, she needed better representation. Very sophisticated and highly intelligent woman. Could play just about any role. Bravo, Annie, RIP, and thanks for all the great memories in your career.

This interview is priceless! She is so full of life and energy, and her ebullience shines! From her truly powerful and virtuosic performance in "The Miracle Worker" thankfully also captured on film, garnering her Oscar win to the aging seductress of Mrs. Robinson in "The Graduate", she remains one Theatre and Film's most cherished actresses! And this interview shows just how she accomplished it -- with the love of her acting profession, her tremendously hard work, her terrific sense of humor (NO surprise whatsoever that the love of her life was Mel Brooks), and her thoroughly charming personality. OH -- just wish we could have seen a final chapter in her life (after she died too young!) -- she'd have been the perfect spokesperson for us old-timers!!! Thankfully her work will love on...forever!

Anne caused a major controversy at the Oscar’s when she kissed Sidney Poitier on the cheek after handing him his Oscar for best actor. That historic moment caused more controversy than celebration. Sidney and Anne’s moment of embrace offended so many people who persecuted them by complaining to the academy and the studios. As well, Anne’s genuine reaction of excitement and happiness was so offensive that she received death threats. Whenever I heard about such things being so controversial I would say “I can’t believe” that happened. But given our past and the way things are currently going I stopped believing that such things could happen.
