In her picture, she looks like she has a goiter. I’m not a medical expert but she may have had a few undiagnosed medical problems alongside of her possible schizophrenia and her epilepsy. Possibly? Having untreated Hashimoto’s disease can also cause hallucinations and hearing voices that aren’t there.

I was thinking the same thing. On top of a hypothyroid diagnosis, I slowly sank into an Addisonian crisis during 2016 and I thought I was going crazy. I almost lost my job because my attitude rapidly went south. I ended up doing 6 weeks of IOP despite my mental health issues being well-managed. I cried every day and didn't know why. I was seen by a medical professional ~15 times and was always in perfect health. During the last month or so, I would have lost hours where I couldn't remember where I had been or what I had done. I very nearly died but I finally got an Addison's dx. It took months for me to really comprehend that my symptoms had been real; I'd been told for almost a year that nothing was wrong. 🤷

Extremely sad case. It’s disheartening to see how so many people have endured tremendous suffering due to failure to seek treatment for mental illness. In this case, besides the exorcism she was also starved, so very cruel. This case brings tears to my eyes. Thank you for all the work you do and for helping to destigmatize mental illness.❤️

Maybe she wouldn’t eat or drink. Look at the picture of her neck and people used to get goiter’s and if I remember right they started putting iodine in salt that you buy at the grocery store to help with the problem. You know the round package with the girl with the umbrella. Thyroid issues are really not fun to have .

@@lorisutherland7728 You're right. People still do get goiters, with Graves Disease or hyperthyroidism. I had Graves disease, which reared it's ugly head when I was pregnant. Had a migraine for over 2 months. Until a lump showed up on my neck out of nowhere, one day. It was horrible, as I couldn't be treated with radioactive iodine or surgery, because of the pregnancy. It was horrible, with terrible symptoms. I still have an irregular and rapid heart rate as a souvenir from it. 😳

@@lorisutherland7728 It is possible that she wouldn’t or couldn’t eat for a variety of reasons, although I don’t know whether or not she had goiter. However, if this is the case she needed medical attention immediately. There are other ways to provide hydration and nutrition if not by mouth, such as enteral feeding (tube feeding) or intravenous feeding. And if the individual can’t make the decision for themselves, the family usually does. From the photos I saw on the internet, it is clear that she was starving for a very long time, one or two weeks without eating will not cause people to look the way she did. Coincidentally, as a dietitian that’s what I do for a living, part of my job is to provide nutrition for people who will not or cannot eat by mouth. As such, I see this as gross negligence from a medical standpoint.

I'm always interested in how exactly mental health professionals separate mentally ill people (which this girl obviously was) from people who are just ultra religious. I've had family members and friends who I felt were in a gray area in between ultra dogmatic and schizophrenia or schizotypal. What is the dividing line, saying you have actual back and forth conversations with some God? Believing you are God? Thinking other people in your life are demons?

I agree with you all, very disturbing. Although today, rather in the 70’s, they truly have come along ways. What I don’t understand, how ones gifted with “ the light”, ones role their eyes, ( although, there truly are ones that feel they’re gifted, & can cause harm, just as much, some are truly gifted, you must always be aware, especially with our souls and spirits). I cannot concept how much darkness grabs more attention ( actually, I can, it truly blows my mind however, many will turn to religious beliefs ( not all are bad, it’s on us actually, how we choose to carry ones self, how we choose to be a genuine caring human, or hateful, without judgment, or any type of separation from our loved ones), yet, they don’t understand faith, I hope this makes sense, I don’t want y’all to feel I’m judging, it’s what I’ve witnessed.) From my own understanding reading the Bible, ( unless I’m missing words), does it ever ( I’ve read a lot of many versions of the Bible, etc. ), does it say, if you’re this religion, “ blah blah blah??!! From my understanding it says, Love, it speaks about no harm towards others, so far, in my 58 years of living, I deeply feel that our Native Ancestors have had it right, we honor one another, love, we respect our earth, creatures, all living things. I feel better believing this, & I’ll continue to teach my family the same, because, regardless, our color, religion ( as long as it’s not sacrificing any breathing soul), it truly makes the most sense. we always need to be so careful about dark places, everyone’s lives matter, and the healthiest help.

Her husband also struggled with severe depression and addiction. Her suicide note included "I have lost my mind by spells and I do not dare think what I may do in those spells. May God forgive me and I hope everyone else will forgive me even if they cannot understand. My position is too awful to endure and nobody realizes it. What an end to a life in which I tried always to do my best." Whether you believe in demons or not, in what world does performing 67 exorcisms on one person make sense? That seems like the definition of insanity. This poor girl suffered her entire life. Every person in her life failed her. This was an interesting one, Dr.Grande. Thanks for this most excellent analysis. ❤

Exactly. Even if they sincerely believed her to be possessed, at what point were these people going to use their eyes and admit this wasn't working? At the 66th exorcism? The 100th? Never? You'd think after four or five tries did nothing anyone would be able to admit an idea is failing. How anyone who claimed to love her allowed this to go on so long much less participated, as she was turning into a battered, starved shell of her former self is beyond me. Religious fanaticism and superstition truly robs people of compassion.

I've been hospitalized 3x because my panic disorder will get out of control. I'll feel like I'm dying and have insomnia that does not respond to otc medications. I always wind up in the ER with it because I won't sleep for days. The longest I've gone without sleep is probably 7 days. This last hospitalization I stayed up about 80ish hours. It's horrifying when it happens. The hospital always puts me on anti psychotic medications and they ALWAYS cause extreme paranoia in me and increase my anxiety. I refused the medication during this last visit and got better within a few days of getting sleep. I have an undiagnosed trauma based dissociative disorder that I'm working on managing with a therapist who specializes in trauma. The hospital always tries to slap a bipolar label on me and over medicate me. I feel so bad for this girl. It's quite possible the medications made her worse.
@margaretgibbs6673
@margaretgibbs6673 Жыл бұрын
I'm so sorry, I hope the therapy helps and you can find a way to cope. That sounds like an absolute nightmare. This case is so tragic and infuriating in part because I disagree with the idea that demon possessions are real - but I completely saw why she got this idea so fixed in her mind. Her episodes and hallucinations would be a terrifying thing to go through on their own, but if you added in the belief that demons are real and can influence and possess people, and if doctors repeatedly failed to solve your problem and just kept throwing medication with awful side effects at your head? Yeah I can see why it was so easy for her to get fixed on the idea of possession. I can even understand to a point why her family, desperate for answers and seeing the same failures from doctors, might have considered this route out of genuine concern. But what I don't think anything can excuse is how far they took it, even as it had to be obvious the rituals weren't helping.

Thank you for this interesting vid 🙏 I grew up in West Germany in the 70s and 80s and I still remember many people were against medication for mental illnesses still in the mid-80s, because these medications allegedly would 'change that person's personality' (and my family wasn't even Catholic). Interesting point. It makes me so angry that people will point to her denial of mental illness all wide eyed and uncritical, as if that proves anything. Like: 1) no shit that's how delusions work, you believe in them 2) even today there is such a stigma against mental issues and people are understandably terrified of being locked up in an institution 3) I'd also point out that there was and is a widespread issue in religious communities of people being very ignorant of mental health and very suspicious of psychology, thinking mental issues are a faith issue or a demonic issue, something that can be solved though prayer. If you take all this into account, I don't see why anyone is surprised that Anneliese feared being labeled as mentally ill and mistrusting the doctors who had already let her down.

You are literally the only comment I've seen of someone who both doesn't discount possession* and actually still manages to call out the neglectful behavior of all the priests and her family this way, congrats. Like: at what point were they going to realize that, belief in demons or not, the rituals weren't fucking helping? At what point were they going to think her horrifying condition was serious enough to take her to a hospital? Even if the doctors failed to solve the mental issue long term they could, I dunno, have prevented her from turning into a bruised, dehydrated skeleton and *straight up dying?* (*Though personally I very much do discount possession, and I frankly feel her being taught about demonic possession as a real thing at all, was what cemented her delusions, and the family's deadly focus on exorcisms so firmly.)

wow this took guts to do! most are afraid to look at this case from a clinical view... it has always been interesting to me,. There is a book about this case but some view it as "not a convincing case of possession" you'd think the easiest thing to do is look at her symptoms. No case is identical and often there are confusing aspects of it like a combination of symptoms of a variety of illnesses. Just cuz it seems odd doesn't mean she wasn't mentally ill. I personally think her problem wasn't mental illness but more of a physical problem that was probably overlooked. It almost seems like a viral problem. Like for example, rabies. One symptom she had was extreme swelling of the hands. They were like twice the normal size. Sounds more like a physical problem which clearly worsened over time. It didn't help that she was in bed at home, held down/restrained during 67 exorcisms. That could make anyone insane. Poor girl...she suffered terribly. Shame on the family and priests... all they did was make it worse and it resulted in her death

This dr is incorrect in almost every point that he's trying to make. Not everything can be explained by science. It doesn't surprise me that a mental health dr believes that Anneliese's was mistreated by her parents and the EXORCIST. She was possessed. It's extremely rare. The real travesty is commenting on something you know nothing about, like Dr. Grande.

„Nero“ is still around today. I conversed with him a few days ago, he mocked my Latin for sounding “barbaric”, whereas he sounds very Italian to me: “Christiani al forno”? This is clearly nonsense. Perhaps he is just the ghost of a well educated pizza baker.

i’m not one to be scared by horror or exorcism cases etc like EVER, i’m always unphased. but ever since i was a child when i first learned about her this is the one case where it genuinely frightens me and makes me uncomfortable and i can’t figure out why. there’s something so chilling whenever i hear anyone talk about her or see her pictures/listen to the exorcism tapes. sometimes i feel like she haunts me or something , i had a dream that she wrapped her hands around my throat and started whispering sinister things, it felt very real. very confusing

Doctor, sorry I have to correct you in this. It is not "the stigma that mental illness had in the late ninety seventies in Germany" but the one it has in rural parts in Bavaria untill today. Rural Bavaria is not Germany. It is stuck in medieval times and is for that reason avoided by many German citizens as a matter of principle. It always aggrevates me when foreigners think Bavarian traditions are typically for us. Nothing can be further from the truth. Sorry for my rant.

@@pattyclements8801Many if not most of the Jesus miracles were exorcisms. He even took requests, much to the detriment of the local swine population. [ Mark 5;1 - Mark 5:13 ] He (with a capital H) said it was a good thing to perform exorcisms, but only if the exorcist is baptized in His name, and commands the demons in His name. @@JiveDadson I'm not familiar with Jesus requiring someone to be baptized in order to exorcize but I do know that Jesus spoke and demons fled. He didn't require months of ritual and no one is recorded dying as a result. When Jesus cast out demons the people were then in their right mind, healed and at peace. I'm not denying demon activity in someone's life. But for this woman the treatment was not Christianity.

So I am a fan of the self help guru from the 1980s, M. Scott Peck. He participated in exorcisms. I am Christian and I believe that the devil does exist. All that said, people should get mental health counseling first and foremost. If people see that there is supernatural help needed, there are resources available.

Another possibility is that she was actually demon possesed. Your argument is in the "everybody knows" circular reasoning category. As in. Everybody knows demons do not exist, so there is no possible way she could be demon possessed. The fact that the people attempting to do an exorcism had no real idea what they were doing is a separate issue. Like someone watching several old episodes of Grey's Anatomy and thinking they are qualified to perform medical treatment on someone.

Isn't there a form of schizophrenia that includes moments of catatonia? That would support the schizophrenia diagnosis and explain why she didn't have clear evidence of epilepsy...
@margaretgibbs6673
@margaretgibbs6673 Жыл бұрын
She had seizures but I do wonder myself, because hallucinations and delusions and other symptoms do seem to match schizophrenia and if she were being medicated for the wrong thing who knows what effects that might have. Then again, maybe she was epileptic but suffering severe side effects from the medication. And having the idea of demons fed to her when she was already emotionally vulnerable and probably desperate for answers that medicine wasn't giving her could've just created this constant vicious cycle and feedback loop of delusion. It's a damn shame the doctors at the time either couldn't find the solution or seemed to flat out brush off the hallucinations as something she could totally live with.

From what I have read and seen, the Catholic Church has become much more rigorous in assessing those who claim or are claimed by others to be possessed. They have a set of criteria and the person must be thoroughly assessed by mental health professionals, who also render an opinion on possession. I think the mental health professionals continue to be involved if needed. The active ingredient in an exorcism according to Catholic exorcists is discomfort/torture of the demon to the point that the demon leaves the person. From what you have said about Anneliese, her assessment was far from thorough by either the exorcists or the mental health community. Her actual condition is simply speculation from inconclusive fragments of information. Her malnourishment from stopping eating, should have signaled the need for medical intervention. The judgment of the family and the priests in this matter was egregiously deadly.

Can I just say that you are the first channel that mentioned she died from malnutrition. Most of the channels that I've watched are kind of like top 10s who just mention that "unfortunately, the priests were unable to save her and she died". It's kind of clear they're gearing toward the view that the possession or haunting killed the victim and not mundane human needs.
