After 10 years of marriage,3 kids, loved my wife, she came home and said she made a mistake. And this song hit so hard. I would of stayed but right then I lost my brother,dad and best friend to death.I bought a Harley started drinking jd and disappeared into the sins of the night. I survived, been sober 16 years now. This song just hit me again. I will be ok this time,I hope

I feel your pain and for the time you've had to endure it. This song brings it out in me still, many years later, after I had 12 years in the closest trust and relationship with someone, only to have him tell me he had suddenly had some sort of 'realisation', and now believed he'd never loved me. The confusion was immense, and the pain unbelievable. There's no instant cure, and it's a long road of regrets, realisation, but gradual acceptance and growth eventually comes through - hopefully making us into more calm and mature individuals, with the bitterness and rejection gradually disappearing. I don't think we ever really know another person, no matter how close we get to them. Thankfully I had my Protestant Christian faith to help me through it. Life is never the same, but it still can be rich and rewarding, and peaceful. I hope you are finding that peace and the strength to help you get through your losses - which far exceeded mine - you had such a lot of loss to get through. However, I want to assure you, God does love you and a sincere, personal prayer for His help will definitely bring things to you to ease it all and which you may not even suspect could happen. You only need faith the size of a mustard seed - believe He will answer - maybe not immediately, but He WILL answer! I'll be praying for you also.

I have loved this song for years. There's so much passion and pain in the song and it makes the listener relate to, and feel their own heartache. Sometimes when I listen to it, tears fill my eyes. It's very moving and Annie sings it with such conviction and sincerity. Great song and great live performance.

That's EXACTLY how to sing this song. The end is meant to be a stream of consciousness followed by a whisper. Not some rapped, yelled bitch-slap, which is what Annie does in the more recent versions. Well, others are different and marvelous in their own way (e.g. Anita O'Day and Betty Carter -- was lucky to see both live). Annie is similarly charismatic and open, yet strikingly individual, distinct, clear, thoughtful and emotive. She has the advantage of singing songs she wrote, mixed into her sets. I have been on a serious Annie Lennox binge on KZfaq this past month, and have decided I like her performances from the early 90s the best. If you have not yet watched it, you must see the BBC Unplugged 1992 performance, Live at Montreux... Mon Dieu! (checking my French, I now see there is an Edith Piaf song with this title to listen to on YT!) Enjoy Annie, with new band, knocking it out of the park in Switzerland in '92! Be forewarned, you will find you have to watch it more than once (unlike the live Eurhythmic shows here).

Better than my old CD and VHS tape from the 90s LOL. This performance (and its cinematography) made my mouth hang open. I feel like I never really heard this song before until just now, and I've been a lifelong devotee, since "In The Garden."
