Annie Oakley was probably the most famous marksman/woman in the world when this short clip was produced in Edison's Black Maria studio in West Orange, New Jersey. Barely five feet tall, Annie was always associated with the wild west, although she was born in 1860 as Phoebe Ann Oakley Mozee (or Moses)in Darke County, Ohio. Nevertheless, she was a staple in the Buffalo Bill Wild West Show and similar wild west companies. Because of her diminutive stature, she was billed as "Little Sure Shot."
The man assisting her is this appearance is probably her husband, Frank E. Butler. Annie had outshot Butler (a famous dead-eye marksman himself) in a shooting contest in the 1880's. Instead of nursing his bruised ego because he had been thoroughly outgunned by a woman, Butler fell in love, married Little Sure Shot, and became her manager.
Theirs was a solid and happy marriage that lasted 44 years, and when Annie died on November 3, 1926, at age 66, a heartbroken Butler followed her to the grave 18 days later.

It's already a chance that scenes like these could have been filmed, But that in addition they were not destroyed for X or Y reasons it is almost a miracle to be able to contemplate these people from another world.

But still . . pretty amazing old footage. Wonder if the guy out front wore hearing protection? Guess we'll never know these 128 years later.

If I went to my gun range today, went in front of the gun, and threw up targets for the shooter, I would be escorted off the property and told not to come back. I have to admit that the lady was a very good shot.

Yeah, something about being in front of the gun just doesn't sit too well anymore, understandably so. I wouldn't do it. He probably lost a little hearing each time as well. I'm wondering if we could develop a side match contest for one of our Cowboy Action Shooting matches modeled along this video. Obviously, we couldn't use a rifle because we can't have hard rounds going up and over the berm, but we could use a shotgun. The partner would have to be behind in back of the shooter, say 4 feet perhaps 6 feet behind. The shooter would be facing down range. The partner could toss something in front of the shooter, perhaps a charcoal briquet. Clay birds would work, but briquets are a bit smaller, would toss nicely, yet respond if hit. Anyway, something just a little different and fun.

As someone else commented, she was almost certainly using bird shot. Still, that'd take some practice. I tried something like this last week using a shotgun. However, I couldn't have the person tossing the target out in front of me. Instead, I had them stand behind me and gently toss a charcoal briquet out in front. Only tried a couple of times but missed them all. Clay pigeons on a thrower aren't a problem - I've time to get them tracked. I'm sure with a little practice I'd do better, but it was more difficult than it looked.
