You guys hit the nail on the head with all of these. My biggest gripe is a game not being finish upon release. There is no reason a game should have an update immediately.

The fact that digital games cost more than physical games that are say like a year old is mind-boggling.

YES--we've had enough naked inside cases!! Don't give them ideas to lose the cases though--they'll start selling the discs in sleeves... Freaking KNEW you had to touch on the update--nothing like bringing a new game home, tearing into it, and boom--let's wait a couple of hours to download the date, download the update, apply the update, download the patch, update the patch, restart the system 5 times... UGH! Hand holding is a good point. Press up on the left stick to move forward? You don't say!! Though, I get that with the lack of a manual and their drive to make games accessible that concessions such as these need to be made... Also, I don't mind longer games--when done right. If it's clearly fluff--that's an issue unless I just want more and am willing to wade through it. But having longer games can help the wallet too. Growing up I got so into RPGs beyond story because generally I wasn't knocking a new game out in a weekend, which was nice when $60 was rolling by in credits after only 10 hours. As a sour and the berry citrust combo, that sounds like a nice beer to have near the grill.

Another pet peeve is when they release a game of the year addition on physical disc but dont put the dlc content on the disc. Instead they give you a vanilla copy of the game with a stinking download code. That burns my bag!

I often think the same thing.... Am I just getting old and not enjoying gaming as much as I used to? But no, I totally agree with you guys.... Business has clearly taken over in negative ways, cutting costs here and there whilst making money by including annoying mictotransactions. Rushed games that are easy to complete and have clearly been released without their full content (saved for the dlc and knowing there will be errors and glitches that need updates applying before the game is even released and way into the later stages of its life..... Very annoying. All hail Retro!

Great points. The insert is one that's been pissing me off for years. I want that manual. I loved seeing the enemies and backstory as a kid and you can't get that now. I do get what you mean by game length. In a way it's annoying, but other games have such an amazing story, I don't mind the lack of difficulty. With that being said. Sekiro is a classic game in modern form. Hard as hell and it takes a long time to beat. But, once you figure it out, you could turn a 30 hour game into a 5 hour game if you got good enough. Cuphead and Blazing chrome come to mind as well. When I beat Sekiro, it is the most badass I've felt in a long time. I haven't been challenged like that in a while. It's worth looking at.

Games made before about 2008 felt like the game developers really loved games and wanted to make a little money sure, but they also wanted to make a really great game full of features and that was fun to play. Nowadays games just feel like they're trying to suck every possible dollar out of you, if the game is good or if you're having fun is irrelevant

Modern AAA Games = an experience. Most modern gamers ( especially “journalists”) require games to be so easy it’s like your essentially playing an interactive DVD. LAME Precisely why I play retro games and modern (indy) games made like the old games. If I want to watch a movie.....I’ll buy a DVD!!

Gaming Off The Grid - it SUCKS! Precisely why I play mega man 1 & 2 quite often. It keeps my reflexes up when it comes to play formers but my true passion is Shmups. The problem is, no matter how well I do when it comes to the high score charts, there are always a bunch of Chinese and Japanese guys that blow me out of the water. Those guys are amazing. I study the way they play and no matter how many hours, days, and weeks I spend on a particular game, they play it once and wipe me off the list. Hahaha 😂 it’s incredible. The TG16 Mini has kept me busy for the past week since o got it from Japan and I’ve only played Blazing Lasers. Still shooting for a 1CC game...the high score would be out of the question. Lol 😆

Sure I play all generations, but this one can be annoying. Don't get me wrong there are great games out there. Sekiro like Chris mentioned. The Witcher 3. My personal favorite, where "Geralt" actually comes from. But they are few and far between. Where in the 80's and 90's developers put a lot of heart, soul and creativity into everything. What I don’t like about games today are the graphics are to realistic. I miss the days of nes and snes graphics. Also I do agree the games are to long and it’s not enough challenge to them even though I do prefer experience in games because I’m older now. Plus game developers are lacking in creativity these days I think.
@GamingOffTheGrid

The creativity aspect is a great point. Not all, but many games today feel very formulaic and cookie cutter. They know what sells and games cost so much to make now that companies mitigate risk which ultimately stifles creativity.

There's so many great coop games on the 360, but when I play with my (older) sister I have to be really judicious about when I hand her the controller because she'll start pressing buttons and then she's player 1 but she's signed into the wrong profile so I can't access the save file and she wants to be on her own profile so she can earn achievements, and the only easy way to fix it is to just restart the console haha. So frustrating. Something something back in my day beating the game used to be the achievement instead of "congratulations, you completed the tutorial! here's 100 gamerscore." XD If there's anything I'd add to the list, it would probably be difficulty modes. Not to say that there weren't difficulty modes before, but they weren't necessary for every game because it's ableist or something if your toddler can't beat Dark Souls? I liked having a set experience that could be finely tuned and crafted by the developers so that it was challenging but not unfair. Nowadays you can usually sleep through the easy and normal difficulties, and either it's the same deal with the harder difficulties, or because no one playtests it and they don't care, it's so insanely brutally hard that it takes all the fun out of the game.

This was a really fun topic! I wanted to take a moment to counter point a couple of these from another perspective. 1 & 2: As a member of the PC Master Race I almost never buy physical games anymore (Switch Games excluded) so I don't care about inserts that I'll never see and I already have to download the whole game so day one patches are just included for me. 3: I actually prefer easier games that give me an experience over difficult games. Hard games tend to piss me off and I find I'm not having fun when I play them. I'm probably biased though because I tend to prefer cinematic games that tell a good story. Difficulty in those games tends to just mean bullet spongy enemies (which are just stupid). 4: lmao, Imagine having to pay full price for a digital game. "Laughs while rolling around a Steam Sale* Although, Nintendo games seem to Never come down in price which is Super annoying. 4.5: I do agree that most modern games lack replay value. I'll replay games like Uncharted or The Last of Us every few years to reexperience the 'movie-like' aspect of it. However, I find it very difficult to replay longer story based games like The Witcher even though I'm a Huge fan of that series. 5: As for micro-transactions… I'm 100% okay with micro-transactions for COSMETICS even if its through gambling with loot boxes. If someone wants to spend money to support a developer (and therefore help extend the life span of a game) by purchasing an item that does Not give them an advantage in game… more power to them. However, if the purchased item gives the player an advantage then you've created a pay-to-win experience which is never okay in my opinion. Without micro-transactions we would go back to the dark days of "map packs" that split a player base and ends up killing the game. Great video as always guys!

Agree with all but one, I don’t think game difficulty or lack there of is that annoying. If anything games are more accessible to a wider audience. There are plenty of difficult games out there for the NES/SNES purists. I would replace difficulty with franchise annualization. Sports titles are the biggest culprits.
@GamingOffTheGrid
@GamingOffTheGrid 4 жыл бұрын
Franchise annualization is a fantastic point. Damn it, why didn't we think of that lol! Many of them are just minor updates to the existing engine and sold to the masses at full price. The big game companies have the consumers right where they want them.

Right I may need to join the rant tangent as well, with it taking shortcuts of making a physical copy of the game, oh yeah it’s a pain in the asres no manual to tell how to play the game...yes I understand there’s tutorial in game but we like reading thing on paper and to skip the tutorial, in retro game days it’s fully packed with the disc and instruction manual of how to play but damn reading those books feels absolutely awesome. Patches oh hoho boy where do I start when it comes to full release of the game I look at the bare bones release date...if they managed to not get it right the first time both old and new, well old games will get a bad reputation with it being buggy or not able to grab attention to the audience...as for new games yes they can get away with it...well most of the time with it trying to make better understanding but couldn’t you get it sorted from day dot!?! Physical and digital price being yep that’s an absolute pain asres to deal though I do collect physical copies of the game since I like to see the cover arts of the game, I do buy digital copies since most of the time physical copies tend to go out of stock, but being the same price as the physical....ohhhh come on, yes there’s deal every now then but still a pain to deal with. Now my bane of existence micro transactions there’s some games I understand that need a bit of micro transactions like dlc stories, eg (ffxv, la noir, dark souls, bloodborn etc.) or to give you some advantages (eg, asphalt9) but with some games that does to make a quick buck like Ctr nitro refuel(my poor childhood ruined) with getting wumpa coins. Ohhhh man I wish micro transactions wasn’t a thing but then again i fell into that thing so god dang it. I don’t think we’re getting to old somewhere along the line some gaming company might return to it roots and start it from scratch and make a good modern day from making old school. Awesome topic to talk about you two!!!

I do agree with some of these points but I gotta at least defend at least one of them The main reason that so many games come with day 1 patches is less to do with laziness and more to do with games not only becoming bigger and more complicated, and thus harder to make, it also has to do with the fact that the actual devs are given strict deadlines with even less time to make them. So the day one patches are more of a necessary evil situation if you ask me. Now micro transactions that actually give you a legitimate advantage I hate and should absolutely never be a thing in a competitive game! I think having things like costumes or cosmetics that dont affect ACTUAL gameplay are perfectly fine, but giving me better stats than someone because I have more money? Thats stupid. Great topic!

The cosmetics should be unlockables within the game. Not a $1.99 cash grab. Day one patches just prove that greed is the name of the game with gaming exec's nowadays. It's like buying a car with 3 wheels, no windshield and only functioning brakes on one side with the promise of providing those parts later down the road. Sure with some finagling you can drive it to Walmart but it's going to be a bear of a ride. Whereas Nintendo motors got Miyamoto out front saying stop on in and hop in our complete fully functioning Yoshi cart! This sumahnagun get you to Walmart lickity split!

Yes, sir! Right on here. I knew I was in trouble when I fired up one of the newer 2k NBA games. To dunk there is a sequence for every over the head/ally oop/between the legs deal. Back in my day (lol), you just dunked, and like in Tecmo NBA for the SNES, you didn't know what type of dunk they would do and it was great. Granted, that is an extreme example. Still, I don't get it. I find myself playing my 360 and older consoles to play my sports games. I hope to start collecting older systems once the garage sale season begins after this. I think it could be epic with everyone having a lot of time to 'clean'. I'll watch the kids play, but when it's a chore just to shoot/dunk/get open in the lane, I'm out. I have enough of a time playing defense, lol.

I agree with some of these picks. For me personally I hate waiting for a game or system update. Why do I have to wait to play a game? Also YES I miss physical manuals! The last few modern games I love were Resident Evil 2 and 3, Persona 5, and Uncharted, and a few Nintendo games, but when I play retro games I feel more satisfied when I beat it. I love Resident Evil 3 remake to death and it's in my top 10 RE games of all time, but I do agree it was a little too easy unless you're playing a harder difficulty, but most gamers will just pick normal mode right away. This is a personal thing, but why can't the Switch hold both Resident Evil 1 remake and Resident Evil 0 on the same cart, yet they can fit all of Skyrim and Witcher 3? Why force me to buy a new copy with the download code? WHY!? Another thing I dislike is the price of Nintendo games. Why is 1 2 switch still $60? I could go on and on about what I dislike, but at the end of the day I do love modern games. Now I know I did a request a while ago, but I would love to hear your problems with retro games

Small pet peeve but whatever happened to System link/lan party? It’s really weird when online multiplayer games can’t run simple system link matches. If you’re fortunate enough to own multiple systems, you shouldn’t have to have online accounts for each player. NTM if there’s no local server hosting, it’s only a matter of time before a game like LittlebigPlanet goes down for good with server shut down.

These rants are the reason why I prefer video games from older generations. Give me the golden age of arcade games ('79-'83) over the current generation. If I could add one more, it would be mandatory installations. The consoles don't come with enough disk space to accommodate the large quantity of titles one might acquire over a system's lifespan. The issue is that as long as consumers continue to pour money into these shady practices by developers, the quality of modern games won't improve.

I agree! I don't know how long fortnite's been out but I know there's been a lot of changes. The game is constantly changing. There are different spots on the maps where there's agencies that you can fight/disguise yourself and loot their vaults. And the bosses have really good weapons. As you level up it will occasionally give you v bucks. So you can stack those until you have enough to buy dances and outfits. And you can eventually buy the battle pass and then the battle pass gives you enough v bucks to keep buying it without actually putting money into it. That's just my experience with it. I want to be honest. I don’t mind modern games. Sure there are plenty of games today that are offered in the market but I prefer games that interests me. Physical or digital are alright as long as you play them for fun, it’s enough to satisfy my enjoyment with the games I have. What impressed me the most is that well known companies like Konami and Capcom released some of their retro games in today’s consoles that I’ve never played before in the past. For example, i just bought the Castlevania Anniversary Collection and tried playing Dracula’s Curse for the 1st time. After going through some levels, I realized how good and difficult classic Castlevania was and thought, “Man, I should’ve played that game years ago.” This was an interesting topic to tackle especially how today’s games affect these new generation of gamers. Retro or modern, as long as you have fun with the games you have at least you enjoy them for what they are.

I totally feel what you’re saying about the “open world“ games and I honestly believe this is why you need to play the Witcher3 GOTY- It is the only open world game I have ever played where going through it, I kept going because I wanted to experience the story and find out what was next as well as the Gwent card game that is featured in it is an awesome mini game to take a break from the open world grind! No other Game (for me) has captured the same element of entertainment and immersive storytelling with exploration as Witcher3- Maybe Skyrim and fallout3-4 for me back when they first came out, but they’re still not anywhere close to white cd project red did with the Witcher3! It’s my favorite game of all time and I went through it four times and I own it on the PS4 pro as well as on the Xbox one X and on the Xbox one X I own both versions to it just for going through and unlocking the achievements a second time because cd project red also built their base game and their complete edition with the idea of gamers in mind and knowing that gamers like unlocking achievements in their games!! Another game that could have done this and if they had of done this I would have bought it is YS: Memories of Celcetta on PS4- I unlock the platinum for this game on my PS Vita and being as the trophy less or the same instead of separate, there was absolutely no reason to re-buy this game on my PS4 even though I wanted to… Witcher3 is Better than you are able to give credit for, simply because there are so many open world games that follow the same old tired and rehashed mechanics. To me Witcher3 is a culmination of perfected storytelling and open road exploration RPG game design, even the minigame featured within it “Gwent“ is super addictive, easy to learn yet hard to master and something you will spend the entire tea of the game doing if you give the game an honest shot and play it like it was meant to be played?

I agree with many points though I'm also alright with some games being a bit easier. Don't get me wrong, I also like games that are hard as well but only if they are fair. Take the Halo games for example: Halo CE was known to be very difficult in Legendary mode, but every time you died it wasn't because the game gimped you. There was always a strategy you could deploy or some sort of visual/auditory que to warn you of the danger, it was up to you to decide what the best course of action to take was. Halo 2 on the other hand, while still an awesome game, had more than a few instances and game designs that felt cheap when you died. Jackal snipers, instant melee deaths, the mc being the second weakest game entity with only the flood infection forms being weaker, equivalent weapons being weaker when you use them versus when enemies use them, you get the point. It's not even on just Legendary either, Heroic and even Normal can have cheap deaths. When games have those kinds of difficulty spikes they may not be as fun to play. Thanks for the video and hope you guys are doing well! :)

Yeah you just get some codes and maybe a Persona 5 decal for your PlayStation 4 controller. And NBA and The Sims went downhill with the piano man harmonica with having to pay to have a complete game even the remastered and newer version of Modern Warfare. And with digital only there's only digital only so you can either pay for the Castlevania collection or pay for the games and the consoles for the Castlevania collection. And WWE game don't have that out on Christmas morning of this year because of broken and full of bugs. And the last thing that really grinds my gears is console exclusives and remake so you got PlayStation for God of War and Heavy Rain and Xbox for Halo and Gears of War and Nintendo for your Smash Bros, well guess what God of War, Bloodborne and Heavy Rain being on PC making them not PlayStation exclusive anymore and the reason we got the console because they were exclusive to that console because I can get Mortal Kombat on any console because they're not console exclusive. And remakes are things that shouldn't touch games that don't need to change like Chrono Trigger, the older Final Fantasy games and Resident Evil 4 because they're perfect as they are, classics and cream of the crop so remakes can either wreck the perfect game and become bad or just leave it as is because we don't need to dig up anything and leave the ghosts rest in peace

Definitely a pain in the old nugget pouch! I don’t play them because of this but sadly I’m a minority so they will keep doing this as long as they make money.

You guys forgot to add another one, too many 100+ hr games! Don't get me wrong I love RPGs but we all work 50 hour weeks and don't have time for every game being 100 hours back in the day there was a lot of 10-30 hour ones you could choose from. No you guys aren't getting old games In general have been declining I feel, mostly remasters I feel like they've been declining since 2013
